| Challinor leaves Stockport on 15:01 - Jun 2 by ramsdale | I feel like I'm definitely in the minority here, and I don't want it to come across as bashing Jim, but would it be all that bad? The football hasn't been that great with him (promotion aside which is arguably all that matters), and will we be able to get away with some of the performances we put in last season and the style of football we played? I'd say on inspection it's a no. My main concern, before anybody is signed or we can see the landscape of the league we'll start in, is that we never had a plan B in the league games against the likes of (no offence intended) Braintree, Morecambe etc, but we're sure going to need one against Rotherham and Port Vale. Again, this isn't intended as a dig at BJ as I spent my entire 20s watching him as a player and now as a manager so understand his obvious and profound adoration for our club, but I just don't see it as the end of the world for us if he were to go. |
I was at Braintree when EEL was playing up front towards the end of the game. Not sure that was Plan A, or even plan B. More likely Plan E on the day.

I'm more concerned about; how long any negotiations may take and what impact this will have on preparations for the new season, players he may take with him, staff he may take with him. I respect what Jim has done, but he is not irreplaceable.

That would be my worry as well.....would Messrs Taylor & Done follow him? If not and he did go, do we have able replacements "in the building". It's not the end of the world......besides, SoftLad is still curently available.

As it stands Challioner backroom staff are still in place, so who ever takes over may have to work with them, yes they may be allowed to bring in their own people, but at the same time they may not, so that is an issue that any new manager at Stockport may have to face. If County decided to appoint McNulty, an in-house appointment may be the way forward, yes it is a risk, but both Taylor was a coach at Barrow and Done was a coach at Port Vale, before rejoining Rochdale. This s besides Josh Lillis, who I believed coached at Barrow. Until Stockport make a decision on their new manager and there is a rumour on the Orient forum that Wellen's is due to leave Orient for Stockport, just like the Dale Forum with McNulty going. We need to re-establish ourselves as an EFL club, we shouldn't be taking a punt on an in-house option imo.

Was McNulty not an in-house appointment. Yes I agree we need to re-establish ourselves as an EFL club, but if McNulty goes to Stockport, any new appointment is a risk, because any unemployed experienced manager is unemployed for a reason. So if McNulty decides to leave, then the board needs to consider all the options, which can have a knock on in terms of recruitment for the coming season, so would leave the board in a difficult position. I think my point was rather that for 90 minutes we did the same thing against a bottom of the league, already relegated Braintree through our goal until they scored their equaliser. Plan “E” shouldn’t have really been neccesary. Again, this isn’t me slating the manager per se, I just don’t think it would be disaster that some are making it out to be as long as the question is answered within the next 2 weeks.

We didn’t really play well in many games towards the end of the season. We did however go more direct during and towards the end of games. Scunthorpe away would have been a good example of switching up how we play to get a result if we’d only defended better after going two up. It was noticeable how often we’d go directly into Dieseruvwe or out wide for Moss to win a header. We most definitely had different ways of playing, it’s that we were playing that well as individuals and collectively, whilst still finding a way to win.

I’m not unaware of Jim’s faults and you only need to look at the play off final for a game where we played terribly for most of it. Nevertheless - we kept going I believe in large part because of the togetherness Jim produced in the squad and the mantra of ‘onto the next moment’. For all his faults, we can’t ignore the impact he had to get us up. The easiest thing possible would be to carry on our momentum, and Jim’s ethos, by going into the next season with him as manager. To have him leave now puts the next season - absolutely critical for us in cementing ourselves back in the league - into jeopardy in a way it never would be if he stayed. Thats not because he can’t be bettered, or replaced. It’s that this is HIS team, with HIS ethos and I think we could be reasonably confident how they would play with him still in charge. Another manager? It’s a complete gamble. Let’s not forget how we’ve done with managers recently. Over the past 20 years we’ve had 8 permanent managers: Hill 1 Steve Eyre John Coleman Hill 2 BBM Robbie Stockdale Jim Bentley McNulty More misses than hits! If Jim goes are we going to get another McNulty or another Eyre? Or BBM?? Not a risk I want us to have to take, which is why I’m all of a sudden much more nervous if he goes.

You’re spot on about his ethos and how the squad are fully invested in that. The way players talk about how they train, the use of classroom work. Need only listen to the captain speak about how important that is. Of course McNulty staying would be the best way of continuing this but if there is a change then focus should be on retaining that culture. With all the best intentions of any new manager, they’d have their own ways of working so would be looking at a Done/Henderson with experience alongside them (would expect Taylor to want to go back to his old club if McNulty got the job). Alternatively it could be said players are resilient and may be open to playing a different way. But admittedly don’t know enough about the managers available right now. The biggest concern is the lack of football knowledge within the boardroom so would expect them to involve consultants who possess that should the need arise. In fact, even before all this, that infrastructure and forward planning would hopefully be in place.

There are plenty of out of work managers out there, all managers hit a bad run of results at some stage and are replaced, that's the nature of the job. It's not always the fault of the manager that they lose their job, there are a lot of factors come into play. If Jim moves on then the easy option for the decision makers is to just give the job to the backroom staff and hope. I think that would be the wrong thing to do now that we are playing at a higher level than the National League. The stakes are high both on and off the pitch and it's imperitive we don't go back down. Morecambe made a bad managerial decision at the start of last season and never recovered, ended up changing managers again mid season and were relegated. It's time for those in the boardroom to gain some experience, invite applications and conduct thorough interviews. That would be the professional thing to do and i hope Cameron Ogden is involved. A Director with experience in conducting interviews and recruitment would also be beneficial. Obviously, this depends on the rumours being correct and McNulty going to Stockport. A manager with experience of the lower leagues with good contacts and the ability to attract decent players to the club should be a priority, he doesn't have to be a yes man, somebody with drive, personality and ambition. Somebody who also plays an attractive brand of front foot, aggressive football would also be good. I'll throw a early name in the hat, Pete Wild and he's available. There's a lot going on at the Club, it's a fantastic opportunity for a young ambitious manager to make a real name for themselves over the next few years, let's see what's out there. It's also the start of a new journey for the Club and a new manager with experience at this level might be what we need. Somebody who wants to get involved in a long term project rather than just a job would be good. Everything happens for a reason, let's view this as the next step in the growth of the club rather than a negative. [Post edited 3 Jun 6:27]

I posted the same thing a couple of weeks ago. If you're Jim McNulty coming off a win at Wembley his stock might never be higher, so from his perspective the timing is probably right to step up another level. He owes us nothing and has been loyal, returning us to the EFL so quickly is a fabulous achievement so good luck to him if the rumours are correct. He was given a three year contract with a brief to return us to the EFL, he did it in two, job done. Every club in the lower leagues is in danger of losing their manager once they start winning a lot of games, as you rightly point out, it's not just us. I'd like to think the Club is already being pro-active and covering different scenarios, we need the managerial situation sorted as soon as possible. If you're losing games or perceived to be under performing, no manager gets sympathy from any fan base. Rochdale's a easy gig compared to most clubs. [Post edited 3 Jun 8:04]

| Challinor leaves Stockport on 08:12 - Jun 3 with 2450 views | D_Alien | Managers are losing their jobs after reaching the playoffs (Maher) or after losing one game following a really good L1 campaign (Challinor). Can you imagine Dale sacking Hilly if he'd lost an L1 playoff final at Wembley? Just one more factor that JM might want to consider... after being both one minute away from auto promotion and one minute away from no promotion These lines aren't "fine", they're virtually non-existent [Post edited 3 Jun 10:23]

If the tone is true and McNulty is going to Stockport, and the board decides to go for an experience manager, possibly with Taylor and Done maintaining the present roles, then Karl Robinson would be the obvious choice. This would allow Taylor and Done to get experience, maintain the link between the management team and the players, whilst at the same time getting in an experience manager, like Robinson, who in my humble opinion was sacked for not winning the play off final.
| Challinor leaves Stockport on 08:51 - Jun 3 with 2280 views | SJE_Dale | If he goes he goes with best wishes and luck for what could be a tough job for him. He's certainly not irreplaceable, but it does sting a bit given the momentum we've built over the past 12+ months. Jim's given a lot of talk of his love for the club and how proud he has been to be part of this new era. The Ogden's have backed him tenfold and undoubtedly we wouldn't be anywhere close to where we are now without their support. He's thrived off that and I think their loyalty deserves his to be honest. The football I could take nor leave. We were spoilt with some unbelievable moments last season but that was a one off and papered over some significant cracks at times. My only concern is the momentum going through summer. 2000 season tickets sold so far and we're barely in June. How much does that stall if Jim takes all the backroom staff + KG for instance. We're looking at another 4/5 weeks before someone comes in and starts implementing ideas. Let's not immediately look internally. Let's be ambitious for a manager with an ethos we can get behind. Who knows the player market well so we can keep momentum going into next season. | | | |
| Challinor leaves Stockport on 09:21 - Jun 3 with 2153 views | JimmyRustler | One thing I was looking forward to is the recruitment side of things as for all his faults, Jim has got it right more often than not on this front. Keeping in mind that we need replacements for KG (maybe even Perry) and what Whatmuff, the players we bring in will be vital in the direction of travel for the upcoming season.
