Those subs played a massive part for sure. It’s that we weren’t even attempting to play our “plan A” in retaining the ball at the back throughout. Nor had we against York, a game where many were impressed by how we prevented them from causing us problems. Difference was Boreham Wood were much better than York on the day and we were particularly poor in retaining possession in the opposition half.
It’s when people say we didn’t have a plan B when the plan A was hardly seen during the run in! |

We did though. Going into Dieseruvwe or out wide to Moss. The latter was particularly noticeable when it wasn’t an option at Wembley with Moss being out.
When we were using it against York it meant their wide centre backs, Kitching especially, struggled to get forward and Pearce was reduced to a more withdrawn role. Our wing backs were incredibly high and no longer another passs sideways for the three central defenders.
The tactic had its faults, particularly leaving us susceptible to a counter attack - we were very lucky not to be a couple of goals down to York by the time we got that very late goal.
Against Boreham Wood we were just really poor. The basics around keeping possession and making the right choices. [Post edited 4 Jun 18:05]

I have to pick you up on the Wembley game. The reason we won that game was because BW substituted their three most influential players, had they not done that i doubt very much we would have won the game. The plan B couldn't have been to wait until we were 2-0 down with minutes running out before bringing on Smith and Petit. It was a poor performance and we got lucky in the end. |

I’ve been looking through Salfords next manager odds to try and get an idea who’s out there, one that stood out and is available is Damien Duff if we went down the inexperienced route, he’s done well over in Ireland, fans were shocked when he left and loved localish. You can forgive dull passing football so long as you win.
I’m not sure he’ll get nearly as many wins in L1 and I therefore wouldn’t be surprised if the Stockport fans start grumbling with the style of play fairly early.
The question will be whether he’s allowed time and whether he can do something with the time given.
I’ve said already I didn’t want him to go, and I’m also not convinced this is the right move for him either - but have to hope he does well and this doesn’t turn into a disaster for him. |
He is inheriting a good squad of players though, a lot are still contracted for next season. He is taking over a club and a a team that have been riding high for a few years. It's a big risk both for McNulty and Stockport i think but i wish him all the best, returning us to the EFL was a great achievement for him. [Post edited 4 Jun 18:26]

There's a certain irony, if he goes, in returning to the place where our exit from the EFL was confirmed, with a lifeless performance
I can't imagine that Stockport won't have followed our performances very closely, besides which, there's footage of every game to review
They must surely know the learning curve he remains on and imo it'd be a huge gamble on their part
I wish Jim McNulty the best of luck (whether he stays or goes) but if he goes, he's going to need it. I personally don't think he's ready [Post edited 4 Jun 18:38]

Whilst I was not convinced McNulty was the right man - he has obviously proved himself and I would not be best pleased if he left now.
Firstly - Stockport are a rival and I’ve still not forgiven them for the 2008 play off final defeat so having them nick our manager would irritate me for that reason alone.
Secondly - Rochdale put their faith in Jim and now’s the time for that to be repaid. Going up into a new league brings all sorts of peril but we have consistency with this group so long as Jim stays as manager. Who’s to say a new manager would gel with the players? Who’s to say they would run through brick walls for a new guy? First season back in the EFL we need to stick with what’s worked. It’s far too much of a gamble to bring in someone new. Even waiting until next season, after we have (hopefully) had a steady season I wouldn’t be bothered about Jim going.
This feels like precisely the wrong thing for the club at this very delicate time.
Would be disappointed, and p1ssed off, if this does all come to pass. |

How does he improve Stockport when they've just finished third in consecutive seasons? Stockport wont have employed him so he can oversee regression and the fans wont accept that neither. The realistic ones might readjust their expectations to a top ten finish but if they get off to a bad start patience will be thin on the ground. I think we can agree that no matter how we analyse Jims tactics he did something that no other Dale manager has ever done, lifted silverware at Wembley and won us promotion in the process. For that we should all be eternally grateful. A day that we will never forget. He deserves full respect for that. | | | |

I think Jim's a very good man manager, and the late goals towards the end of the season were no fluke. From the outside looking in the team spirit seemed as good as I have ever witnessed at Dale.
After last season, I doubted he would ever take us up so hats off to him for that. Wembley was amazing and created life long memories and our points tally before that was amazing.
And yet, despite all that, I don't feel too upset. This doesn't feel like when Parkin or Hill left. I think this season will be about stabilising ourselves in L2 so I'm confident we can appoint someone capable of that. I don't believe Jim would have had us pushing for promotion and I'm not convinced he will have great success at County either. | | | |

Seems daft. Jim managed as a caretaker in League 2 and was frankly awful.
He's never managed in League 1.
At Dale, now, he's got momentum, a board he knows will back him and players who will fight until the end. He's had time to achieve what he and his staff have.
Will he have that at County? I doubt it.
If he has a poor season at Dale, or Stockport, up to new year. Will he keep his job at Dale? Yes. Will he at Stockport. No way.
Take your time, Jim. Steve Parkin and Keith Hill will tell you so. You are young. Get a better CV. Then make a move. It will serve you better.

Intelligence is the main key to being a good football manager, that followed by good people skills/man management. Say what you like about JM, but he had both in abundance, and unfortunately, I don’t see anyone available with half the talent for both that JM possesses.
