The season of evil begins with the birth of a new Wolves manager.
Rob Edwards booted.

Orient have been spending reasonably big money for a club of their size and their American owner has just been ousted from the Fubo business he founded so be interesting to see what goes on there.

Hayden also grew up in Brentwood and I believe he lives around there, as does his family, which is a 20 minute drive to Orient's ground and 30 minutes to their training ground, so all kinds of very attractive lifestyle reasons for him to join Orient rather than be a squad player at Bolton or West Brom.

I think Os are in few exciting seasons. Recruiting well, got money, gonna extend the ground in all likelihood and will have learnt from last year's collapse. If QPR don't go up in next couple of years, I reckon it'll be a league derby.

Cook was brought in when we were in danger of getting relegated.
He was clever and put an extra year on his side based on appearances. He played so well over 2 years that he managed to get appearances for that extra year, but by then his legs were gone for the Champ (despite still being a really good player).

I would guess, with no evidence, that he was on £20K per week. And now I would guess he's dropped down to £5K per week. Yes, the drop-off is very large for players when they get old; hence, they want to rinse it before then. Good deal for Wycombe as I suspect he can do a great job there.

Which brings us to Hayden. Had a great season helping us out and then went to Pompy and helped them stay (after all, who can be worse than Dozy). And of course we made the mistake of not signing him for that season. So, last season we signed him after the window (probably gets him on the cheap, I would guess £15K per week). But his legs had totally gone by then and he knew it. This time we were smart and only did a 1-year deal. So, off to Orient, who seem to be splashing the cash and he's been smarter this time and got a 2-year deal.

Lazy fan not a dig at you but a general comment. This notion of a player’s ’legs being gone’ at 30/ 31 is simply absurd. They are barely past their prime at this point. Any player who minds himself reasonably well and doesn’t pick up a series of serious injuries can play at the level they have being playing at until 33/34 at least. What next ‘washed up’ at 28?

I'm guessing none of us really know the actual amounts, but if Steve Cook and Hayden were amongst our top earners last season then that puts them at what £30k per week, maybe?

So, maybe £1.5m p.a. on the payroll ea?

I love Steve Cook, think he was great for us, Hayden not so much, but if no other Champ club was offering close to this, meaning that the players had to drop to a lower division, then this tells me that QPR were overpaying wages, like we did with Mac Bonne.

Still if these guys can get 3 years at £10k per week, then they will be better off, as they will pay less tax I guess.

I was hoping the club had stopped handing out silly contracts, but maybe Cook was signed by Ainsworth when we were desperate on one of those year on year increasing deals, so maybe thats all finished with now?

As you say, it's all conjecture.

You could just as easily say the fact both players went to L1 clubs vindicates the decision to let them go.

The Steve Cook that originally signed was a very different prospect to the Steve Cook of today, and yeah, he did a great job. You could argue we might have gone down without him, which would justify almost whatever we paid him. But no one's paying that now because a full Championship season would be beyond him.

Hayden, who knows. It's been suggested he was a panic buy but it was one year, it didn't really work out and now he's gone. There wasn't exactly hot competition for his signature, so I doubt he was on top dollar. Whatever, it's not comparable to the gazillion year contract for Celar, for instance.

I'm all for bashing the club when it's justified, but to me all the evidence points to us being a lot more canny in the transfer market than we used to be.

Your reply is valid in general, but for Hayden, it seems it came early for him, and it was Hayden whom I was specifically mentioning, as he had that lack of impact for us.

So why is he not still playing for Newcastle? Answer, because he is declining as a player.

He's just done a long in-house video from the West Ham training ground announcing he's staying, how he wants to be promoted as captain for their 50k season ticket holders etc. He won't leave. His wife and family are all tied-in to the area and are not moving house. He's 30 in December. That's him now. (Though if he'd got an offer from Spurs I reckon he'd have gone!)

Jealous. Imagine Bowen back in the Championship.

Lets hope he didn't get used to VAR and semi decent refs in the Premier League.

Three game weeks and shocking officiating might be a nice wake up call.
Don't forget a trip to the Olympic stadium will be most Championship teams cup final.

I saw a lot of our players mention it as a fixture they were looking to (along with Millwall!)

I think his lack of impact was down to lack of motivation rather than his legs not working properly. When we signed him in the immediate aftermath of the Coventry debacle he likely expected to get regular game time. I believe he had a genuine affinity for the club after his previous loan spell. When the game time never really materialised (due to Nourry’s insistence on Varane playing) he (similar to Field) became disillusioned and consequently his performance levels dropped.

There’s a whole herd of zebras in this post.

I must admit I never rated him in his first stint with us and I never thought he was better on the half turn but so many people were adamant about it that I thought I was wrong and thought he’d be a good fit, especially given that he was available, knew the club and was a popular choice.

I was the least surprised ever when he turned out to be as largely anonymous and inconsistent as he has been. I think with two players: Saito and Hayden, Nourry listened to the fans and brought them in as a result. I liked Saito last season but wouldn’t have got him for the amount we did. Hayden certainly didn’t start brightly and fade, he was never offering much.

There is no evidence that Nourry picked the team apart from one cup game very early on when kids were chosen but at the time we had some injuries and not our full squad, but that was certainly a mistake. I have seen nothing from Stephan that indicates he is some kind of puppet and I think he’d have been offski rather than signing a new contract if that were the case. Field had several chances early on and played badly, sometimes out of position, but I think Stephan just didn’t fancy him. Similar to Morrison. If you want to see everything as a conspiracy then you will continue to do so but sometimes the obvious is the truth.

And no I’m not a Nourry lover, fangirl or anything I might be called. The jury is out for me as I think he’s done some good things and not so good things. I just find sometimes the facts are stretched so thinly that the conclusions are meaningless.

That Kiwi who scored a few at the WC and looked handy, Elijah Just, appears to be in his way to Swansea from Motherwell. I wondered if we’d have been in for him.

We don’t really need another small winger but if Dembele is being sold (and is still injured anyway) and there are any doubts about Poku’s fitness/availability, he wouldn’t have been the worse option.

If Swansea’s Slovenian centre forward continues in the same vein as last season, and they make a few improvements, they could be up there too.

Portsmouth have a pretty bad injury list at the moment. Four out long term, four out for few weeks and four being monitored. Should be interesting opener.

Damn, I saw him play (against Belgium) here in Vancouver, he was very impressive. Popped up all over the park and has goals in him. He can play on the wing but was also effective more centrally running at defences. Like him a lot and would have have loved him at Loftus Road.

If Vipotnik continues banging them in then I can definitely see Swansea in the top 8 this season. I think we bought the wrong Slovenian named Žan!

The basic message being these add ons mean we don’t have to sell anyone and to give the investors a year off from propping the club up.

That said, it does mean a good Boro side last year doesn’t need to be broken up. They’ll surely be competing for promotion again this season.
