One of my first QPR games (the first was the 0-3 League Cup defeat to Plymouth in November 1973). Was standing towards the Ellerslie Road side of the sloping School End (can’t really remember how the away fans were segregated in those days).
I still have my programme for the game, which I just flicked through. According to ‘statistics wizard’ Derek Buxton, we’d never beaten United before (there’d been five previous meetings). The victory also created a new record of 23 home League games without defeat.
None of us could have realised it was to be George Best’s last appearance for United. Nor (and perhaps more significantly for QPR) could any of us have imagined that, wearing the No 3 shirt for the visitors that day, was a Rangers manager in waiting: Er, Stewart Houston, anyone?

I seem to remember Young getting booked after 2 minutes, for his THIRD foul on Dave Thomas.
