Manager to get a bonus if he halves the amount of time employees spend on toilet breaks. New training drills include throwing balls at doorsteps from a moving vehicle.

He then became Pompey's chairman for six years. Terry Venables played more games for Chelsea than QPR (as well as more time), and spent as much time managing Spurs and Palace. Gerry, yes, a big QPR man - but still was very happy to go manage Spurs, no matter how he managed that news. Rodney Marsh was hardly a one-club man and left for a better opportunity at City (understandably). He spent more time away from QPR than at it, just like TV and even Gerry. Bhatia's 19 continued years at QPR outstrips all of them, other than Gregory. Clement, Gillard, McDonald: yes, loyal one-club servants, mostly. But none are going to sponsor a stand to the tune of a decent six to seven figures every year! |
Achievements: Gregory - promotion, FA Cup final Venables - promotion, FA Cup final, top 5 1st div Francis - top 5 PL, England captain Marsh - our only trophy Bhatia - stuck around for 19 years Wooooooooooo

It's not my list. It was a reply to someone else's, who suggested we "rename it after someone who achieved or spent much of their career at the club." Obviously, Marsh, Francis and Venables were key historic players and the later two managers. I'm not policing their achievements at Rangers. Merely pointing out they spent plenty of time elsewhere, most notably Venables who is not known particularly as a QPR ledge above his other employers. Besides, didn't we just rename the stand for money? What's Achilleus Security's playing record at QPR like?

Bhatia: two promotions I am being glib. I hold no candle for Amit Bhatia. But I am really not having Gregory on this Mt Rushmore. Yes, he built the club but he also very nearly destroyed it entirely. Bhatia never came close to that, never had matches halted protesting him. (And Gerry...well, not a spotless story there.)

Okay, fair enough. We obviously need the money that comes in from stadium sponsorship deals. I'd love a stand to be named after Rodney because he was my boyhood hero, but there'd be no cash in that. It's great we've got the Stanley Bowles stand at least, but of course, he played for a number of other clubs, though racked up more games for us than the others put together.

If we're naming and shaming then let's do it right. El Tel didn't just play for Chelsea, he absolutely loved the club and made no secret of it. Jim Gregory grew up supporting Fulham. Gerry Francis (by his own admission) grew up in Chiswick supporting Brentford because that was the club his dad was playing for at the time. https://www.indyrs.co.uk/2015/ Rodney Marsh grew up in Stoke Newington following Arsenal! For my money Gerry Francis is more deserving than anyone of having a stand named after him. He was captain of our best ever team, the only QPR player to captain England, and he came back to manage arguably our second best ever team. He is also 16th on our all time appearances list with 352. Yes he was a Bees fan in his reckless youth but he eventually saw the light and has been on the righteous path ever since. FWIW there are a couple of surprises on our all time appearances list. I was genuinely surprised to see Kevin Gallen in tenth with 403 appearances. Clint Hill has more appearances for us than Les Ferdinand. And if you go all the way down to 27th you see Ilias Chair on 283. So with a bit of luck Illy should reach 300 this season and if he can get to 312 he will be in our all time top 20 - just behind Stan Bowles in 19th with 315. https://www.qprhistory.co.uk/p [Post edited 18 Aug 20:51]

Gregory may have sold the club, but he did a hell of a lot for QPR, like raising the club out of the third tier and into the first division, revamping the stadium and signing players like Marsh who helped QPR club up the leagues and winning its only trophy. So both if those achieved more than Bhatia. Venables too achieved more than Bhatia. Promotion to the first division as a player and as a manager, as well as QPR to the only FA Cup final. So what if he played for Chelsea and Spurs. If Bhatia is not sponsoring the SAR stand his name should be removed. He may have spent 19 years at the club, but apart from perhaps appointing Warnock he didn't contribute much to any success. And his last act to appoint Ainsworth almost led to relegation, saved only by Reading having 6 points deducted.

Re read my post and you will see I said unless it is a contracted financial agreement his name should be removed. Achilleus Security's is sponsoring the stand so nothing to do with appearances for the club. My suggestions were named because they achieved things whilst at the club. Bhatia achieved next to nothing as far as success on the pitch or status as a club during his 19 years. His main success seems to be his work with the club in the community. So I repeat, unless he is going to pay to have his name on the SAR stand, it should be removed as soon as permissible, preferably for another financial sponsor, if not, for someone with a better contribution to the club as a player , manager or chairman than him.

Bhatia didn't contribute much to the 2nd promotion as Fernandes was Chairman and took major decisions, I'm not sure what he did for the 2014 promotion. Yes, Gregory's final QPR decision was almost a fatal one for the club and can be hard to forgive, but I don't know what matches were almost halted in protest in other seasons (you may be confused with the sitting protest against the Thompson owners). As for Francis, he was good for the club as a player and in his 1st spell as a manager. Yes, he left to manage Spurs, but he was pushed into it by Thompson who wanted to bring Marsh in to oversee Francis as well as pushing to sell the team's best players rather than improving the squad so that QPR could challenge for trophies.

OK, but the decision to appoint Ainsworth was still an extremely poor one and it almost destroyed the club the following season until Cifuentes replaced him and worked a minor miracle to avoid relegation, and Bhatia had nothing to do with appointing Cifuentes.

Regardless of views on whether he’s done a good job or not, here’s an owner with monumental wealth behind him, who’s been in situ for close to 20 years, basically giving up on a decent, historic second tier club because attempting to progress has become futile. The owners can’t fund their ambitions because the authorities stop them, under some ridiculous pretence that’s the only way to protect clubs from unscrupulous owners, basically punishing good owners because of the occasional weapon who, if they’d been fit for purpose, the authorities would never have allowed to buy a club in the first place; basically, making decent owners carry the can for their own incompetence. Not forgetting, of course, the thinly veiled drive to ensure decent, historic Championship clubs never forget their place in the food chain. |

Apart from getting Warnock involved , what exactly did he do? He was propped up by his families wealth and the Malaysians. Not sure what he did exactly. Seemed a nice guy but we've seen so many London clubs sail past us . Even if we get promoted this season, are we really ready to establish ourselves like Fulham, Palace, dare I say it Brentford. Good luck to him at Liverpool and lets hope he can use his influence there to help us with buying, selling or loaning players, but he's far from legendary status imo.

Hard agree. The reason the likes of Brentford and Brighton have accelerated past us is having a strong hand on the tiller. Bhatia scurrying off to Liverpool when he got the opportunity sums up his commitment, just like Jamie Reuben to Newcastle. A pair of chancers, who we are well rid of.

No, I am not confused. The pitch protests were at both QPR and Fulham, against the plans of Fulham chairman David Bulstrode of Marler Estates and QPR chairman Jim Gregory to merge the two clubs as Fulham Park Rangers and redevelop Craven Cottage. It was Gregory's mutinous exit strategy. westlondonsport.com/qpr/thirty-five-years-on-how-qpr-and-fulham-fans-stopped-the-merger As for Gerry being pushed into joining Spurs...please. He desperately wanted the promotion of a new job at a bigger club for more money, but loved to also appear aggrieved. A complex man, but also truly great as a player and an excellent manager for QPR first time (and terrible second time). All besides the point. Naming rights are valuable and unless Bhatia is still paying, he'll come down off that stand. I doubt very much that having gifted one stand to a legend from the 70s through gritted teeth they will do so again. You never know. Maybe someone with a placard insisting the SAR stands on 8 minutes every week singing "Gerry Francis's Blue & White Army" will force the board's hand. Two 70s legends would be pushing it, I reckon. Need modern heroes, something for the new gen. The Christian Nourry Stand?

The reason other clubs have sailed past us, imo is having football savvy people running their clubs, with a long term plan , and just made more good decisions then bad. If we look at the decisions Bhatia would have been involved with from sacking Warnock, to buying all the mercenaries, to appointing Ramsey, then JFH, then Holloway, Maclaren, etc etc, He's Ferdinand with no experience as DoF or any kind of stat related recruitment.. The poor decisions just goes on and on, with Bhatia involved in one compacity or other. They guy is a lot more experienced going into Liverpool though, and with foundations already in place, his investment might be ok this time.

Exactly. I get why some people defend Bhatia because they acknowledge his role in the Warnock appointment. However, dropping his knickers as soon as the Liverpool opportunity presented itself does sum up the half-arsed dilettantism we've seen over the last decade. Nourry may have his faults but you certainly can't fault his commitment and drive - and to be fair to him he has already shown an ability to learn from his mistakes, like sorting out the goalkeeping position this season.

I think you are absolutely spot on. I haven't been paying much attention to the Liverpool takeover so only today discovered that the Liverpool takeover values the club at more than $7bn. Let that sink in. A quick AI search estimates that all 72 EFL clubs are worth a combined €2.6bn (Just over $3bn US Dollars at today's exchange rate) : Breakdown by Division EFL Championship (24 clubs): ~€2.20 billion EFL League One (24 clubs): ~€320.08 million EFL League Two (24 clubs): ~€84.23 million (Those valuations are taken from Transfermarkt, so a rough guide at best) https://share.google/aimode/tw This is what financial regulation of football has achieved. One elite club on its own is now worth roughly 2.33 times what the whole EFL is worth [Post edited 19 Aug 22:45]
