Depressing read in the Sunday Times about slumping sales. I'm aware of it of course, but there you are.
In the early CAMRA days we travelled miles for a pint - people thought we were bonkers and I guess we were.
I didn't quite complete the Youngs 135 Club but did the Fullers Passport.

That description 'snobbiness' was something we experienced 50 years ago. I couldn't give two hoots what anyone does or doesn't drink, just enjoy it and enjoy the pub. | |

Yeah, depressing news. Real ale is a real pain for pub landlords as it goes off so quickly, so unless you've got a loyal following as it were then I can see why they stick to lager. That said, there are still many great pubs where serious drinkers gravitate towards. For Harvey's fans, there's the Royal Oak near London Bridge which does the complete range - Best, naturally, but also the seasonals such as Tom Paine, Armada, Bonfire Boy and Old (my favourite). In South London next to Carshalton stn, the Hope is a wonderful community-owned old-fashioned boozer with a tremendous variety of ales, then you've got the ever-reliable Fullers pubs and of course Spoons - the new one at Waterloo is very good, as is the one in Hammersmith. |  | | |

My experience at work with younger people (albeit in quite a boozy industry) is that they actually love drinking, but most of the pubs round here are minimum £8 a pint. They can't afford it. There was some card data during the world cup that younger people would spend almost as much as older drinkers but over more transactions cos they can't afford rounds.

This. Whenever I go into central London I stick to Spoons but even their prices are rapidly catching up. But in my local in Sutton a pint is still relatively cheap (£5.40) and in Spoons £3.19 (£2.95 Mon-Weds) so all is not lost quite yet. | | | |

Talking of stations, there’s a small ‘pub’ selling real ale in an old cab office next to Platform 3 at Claygate station apparently. I’ve not tried it yet (bit too close to the Ch*lsea training ground for my liking) but might bite the bullet and give it a go sometime. | | | |
