There's a guy I know who does that annoying thing of liking Taylor Swift (and never shutting up about her) while also liking straightedge hardcore punk bands. It's a trick as old as time. Pick something poppy and irrelevant, pick something outlandish and pretend that gives you range.
However, whenever I'm presented with a band/artist I don't know (or like), I'll ask for their best tune. Tell me their best tune and I'll listen to it. And I'll listen properly. No looking at my phone or watching something. I'll give the song its rightful due.
He suggested four Taylor Swift songs. Not one of them was anything new/special. It was all mediocre. I mean look, female solo pop music isn't my thing but occasionally a song might have something about it. But Taylor's shit was just nothing. Not good, not necessarily bad. Just bland.
I did this once with Muse. I was in a band and one of the guys was like 'Muse are good' so I asked him for the best song. He ended up showing me a live video of them playing one song. It was 'punky' in that it was a bit fast and riffy. Utterly unremarkable. At one point the singer trips but styles it. It was deffo a trip but he pivoted and then made a point of smashing up his guitar like he's hardcore. You're not hardcore. You're a f**king ponce.

Most underrated artist for me is the late, great Oscar Brown Jr.
First came to my attention via Gilles Peterson’s original Mad on Jazz Radio London shows in the late 80’s (Work Song, The Snake etc) and was so proud to have had a hand in bringing him over to London (the first time since 1963) for three nights at the Jazz Cafe in 1991.
I think his talents were so wide-ranging (he was a singer, songwriter, playwright, poet, political activist and beyond) that he didn’t fit conveniently into any one box. Consequently no one quite knew how to ‘sell’ him to a wider audience.
This year is the centenary of his birth and his family are launching a series of events in Chicago which will hopefully go some way to doing just that.

I really don't like Oasis, but I'd never say they're overrated, cos their technical ability isn't why people like them. They're singalong songs entwined in the fabric of their lives. If they were suddenly doing weird time signatures it wouldn't really change how people feel about them. People rate them cos they mean something to them |  | | |
