Not clicked on the link as it can’t be fact checked

Understand this lady had lived in the apartment for 71 years.
Madness she didn’t have some form of protection as many do in the UK - many even having peppercorn rent guaranteed etc

Sadly Spain is another country with a population crisis which is effecting everything
The indigenous population was/is falling due to low birth rates (much the same as elsewhere in Europe). The elites have looked to offset this with mass immigration from all over the world and created huge issues - but they’re alright in their ivory towers and gated developments.
It’s a fact:-
Rapid population growth without matching public infrastructure investment has driven up housing costs and strained urban services in major metros like Madrid and Barcelona.

Where demand outstrips supply opportunitists and big business will succeed.
Many will say the answer is to build, build, build…… wrong! You have to focus on infrastructure capacity and look at other ways to sustain natural population growth

RIP to the lady

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

That's the Great Replacement theory. It is racist. There is no evidence for the idea that "elites" are trying to change demographics. People migrate of their own accord, for a better life.

I’d usually agree with you. I get a bit sick of the Daily Mail sad face stories about someone having to pay £50k hospital fees having crashed their moped in holiday in Florida with no travel insurance.

However, big money chucking 87 year olds out of their home to be able to turn an even bigger buck leaves a nasty taste IMO.

No evidence apart from the facts.

Won't rise to the modern day witchcraft statement.

Not looking to turn this into an entrenchment backwards and forwards either as I'm sure everyone agrees that what happened to this lady is totally wrong.
The underlying reasons it happened was what I was commenting on and unfortunately for me everything boils down to numbers

Its strange this particular case has caused so much attention, because this kind of thing happens constantly and its rife in our own country also.

Sadly, I have known of a man who I have worked with and was evicted through no fault of his own, and then moved on from a hostel he was placed in, as he had a car and was told this meant he had accomodation. He had recent health concerns and only a few days later he sadly passed, trying to sleep in a small car in the extreme heat.

Its terrible and a national and international disgrace.

Its weird how certain cases are given such prominence when this kind of thing happens world wide all the time and always.

I can tell you from having worked in fields surrounding social care, this is not an isolated incident at all, in anyways.

Wonder if you’re cherry picking to suit your politics but you seem to have ignored LBlocks comment,
‘Rapid population growth without matching public infrastructure investment has driven up housing costs and strained urban services in major metros like Madrid and Barcelona .’

Can you put immigration on the back burner for the moment and let us know if you agree with that statement or if you disagree perhaps you could let us know what you believe is the actual problem.

This is partly the reason why social housing is needed, if only to stop private landlords and developers from increasing rents to unaffordable levels.

And yes, if indigenous populations had 2 or 3 children then they could reduce the need for mass migration.

However,I do understand why a lot of immigrants enter European countries. They are often escaping poverty, war or the effects of climate change such as extreme heat, famine and severe weather outcomes like floods, hurricanes, tornadoes forest fires.

Developed countries can help make these countries safer and help with farming and rebuilding which in the long term can be cheaper than dealing with over population problems.

Without wanting to turn this into yet another 'one of those' threads, you have - at least as far as I can see - conflated issues that LBlock didn't even mention; you're the one introducing the idea of the 'great replacement theory' and then playing the 'racist card', in response to something he didn't say.

It is an incontrovertible fact that for decades western governments have relied on mass immigration for economic reasons. It is also incontrovertible that rapid population growth (and it has been incredibly rapid in Spain) can put short-term pressure on housing markets, local healthcare systems, schools, and public transport if infrastructure investments do not keep pace.

Spain has recently become a textbook example of a Western government explicitly using immigration as a primary lever for economic growth. While many European countries have tightened borders (look at Denmark, for example), Spain’s left-wing coalition government under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has pursued a fundamentally different approach, heavily tying its economic strategy to workforce expansion.

In April 2026, the Spanish government enacted a historic migration regularisation scheme, offering legal residence and work permits to undocumented migrants who arrived in Spain before 1 January 2026 and could prove at least five months of continuous residence. While the government initially anticipated 500,000 applicants, nearly 1.2 million migrants applied by the close of the application window on 30 June 2026.

This has inevitably had an impact on housing and the whole social infrastructure.

There are some facts, for those of you calling for them.

Then show some facts.

1. Old lady lived in the apartment 70 years.

2. Building sold to a private company in 2018.

3. The lady's rent rose from €500 to €2,650.

4. The company offered to reduce the rent to €1,650. Thing is, her pension is only €1,350!

5. 23 September, and despite her poor health, the 87 year old woman was evicted.

6. She dies within 2 weeks later.

These facts should be enough to get to grips with it. Given her age and health, any sensible company would have just waited!

Those are selected facts - what are the FULL facts?

Maybe she has not paid any rent for years? Maybe she has massive rent arrears? Maybe she has been offered dozens of alternative places to live? Maybe there has been a long and drawn out legal battle that she's lost at every stage and has ignored every verdict handed out?

Frankly I haven't got a clue what's gone on but I don't trust the news media to give me a full impartial report and I'm not going to fill in the gaps to suit my own world view either.

I don't know the populations of Madrid or Barcelona off the top of my head but it's certainly not true of London. Urban population has grown by less than a million people compared to 1951, while transport infrastructure has increased massively.

In terms of housing costs, it's also not the case that we have too many people or too few homes: UK wide the ratios of homes to people, and to households, are higher now than they were in the 1970s. The issue is that over that time the country's reserve of social housing has been almost entirely privatised and not replaced, which has driven up prices across the rest of the market.

When you look at the numbers, the underlying macroeconomic issues have relatively little to do with immigration, and a huge amount to do with the mass transfer of wealth from the working and middle classes to a much smaller number of much wealthier people, and from collectively owned state resources to privatised industries.

All of this is downplayed persistently and aggressively by rich and powerful people with very clear economic and political incentives for the rest of us to blame immigrants, people with disabilities etc instead of politicians, private equity, large corporations and the like. We all spend a huge amount of time pointing fingers at each other, when the people actually screwing us over get away scot free.

It's absolutely clear what part of the post I am objecting to. The Great Replacement theory. He is blaming those high costs and strained services on "elites" deliberately importing migrants to dilute existing populations. I am saying that is both wrong and racist. Can you let me know what the actual problem is with calling out fascist tropes?

Everything that is wrong in the world is in this! on 17:19 - Oct 8 with 737 viewsNW5Hoop

Demographers note that immigrant populations rapidly revert to the mean birthrates of existing populations. It's a trend called "fertility convergence". If you don't believe me, Google it. There are studies of scores of European countries. There was one in the news the other day, from Scandinavia, about how immigrant birthrates were as low as anyone else's.

Migrants are not coming to Europe then having eight children each for ten generations and causing societies to collapse. It simply isn't happening.

How can it be "absolutely clear" when LBlock did not once mention the 'great replacement theory' or even reference it. He did not use the word 'dilute' or even suggest it. You're actually making things up and then responding to them, angrily, and at the same time claiming the moral high ground. I find that plain weird.

Quite. Net migration to the UK last year was 171,000 people, 208,600 new homes were built. This year net migration is likely to be about 70,000 and house building around 200,000.

It will make zero difference to the cost of housing.

Hubble compared Denmark (strict migration controls) vs Spain (less strict controls) both have supply issues but Denmark's housing is more expensive. Not that that's stopped loads of Danes owning property in both Denmark and Spain.

Appreciate your reasoned response, and it’s fair comment. Be nice if NW5 tried this approach rather than lobbing the standard go to grenades into the argument.

Take your point regards social housing, definitely true. Seems to me that if the houses to people ratio has remained relatively unmoved the problem is largely down to building the wrong types of houses/flats. When I train into London it’s hard to imagine any of those high rise flats around the river are in anyway affordable. Think it’s about time government secured those empty flats and put British people who require social housing into them at the developers cost. Not a perfect solution but it might concentrate the minds of wealthy developers.

Only thing I’d call into question, whilst London may only hold 1m more people since the 1950’s (its population did drop considerably in the 70/80’s and only recovered this century) but the population overall had increased by around 12 million in the last 30 years, and creating houses for that surplus 11 million outside London would be no mean feat even if they had built the right type of housing.

Take your points though.

Without knowing the full story, it appears that the new landlords massively hiked the lady's rent to unaffordable levels, before evicting her. Presumably for non payment.

The UKG has enacted laws to prevent "no fault" evictions and to prevent extortionate rent hikes.

This rings very viscerally to me so I'll just add two things:

Gentrification is rampant and spurred on by developers in so many major cities. When I left Brooklyn the building was already being targeted. They stopped leaving the envelopes under the door to put the cheques in (ridiculously old fashioned I know) so I phoned them up and asked what was going on.

The person on the end of the phone told me the building had been sold and they could either send me this month's rent slip or they could make me an offer for a buy out. We had already booked our flights to come back, so I asked her how much she would give me to buy my way out of the lease. She asked what would you be looking for so I said '$10k minimum'.

I thought that was a solid effort, but the fact that she didn't bat an audible eyelid caused me concern once I'd hung up the phone. I I went back a couple of days later and made adjustments based on tax etc but I probably could have got more. I'm at peace with it would've been spent long ago.

The point is though, assuming that poor woman had similar rental rights to me at that time, that we in the UK have never had, it is so easy to see how she was squeezed, and for how long. Other people in my building had started to feel that. Same developer by the way as featured at the very end of The Jinx Part 2 for anyone who's seen it.

The other issue is the massive preponderance of Airbnbs all over Spain.
I'm a bit less wordy on that one.
