QPR the best kept secret in the championship on 13:50 - Oct 29 by JamesB1979
I think he was signed to start alongside Madsen as Stephan doesn’t fancy Varane. Whether he can give us 35+ games there this season, I guess we’ll find out soon enough!
As much as I agree, it's not great for Varane to be bench sitting while a 30+ loanee plays 35 games in his spot. Unless you go up in which case all bets are off.

Kamara, unfortunately, is currently having to do big minutes because of our issues in that area. I'd be surprised if that was the intention when he signed given his lack of action the year before, and we'll be fortunate to get away with it if it has to continue.
Is it also partly because he’s been much better than we could have hoped?
After the Jeff Hendrick/Isaac Hayden disappointments of past midfield loans we’d be forgiven not to expect much. But he’s been really good and it’s hard to drop him.

I think we need a moratorium on unsolicited mentions of Jeff Hendrick. I just had to go in the bathroom for a little cry.

True but it’s good that Stephan can pick the players he thinks are best rather than the ones the club wants for development. I have seen some improvement in Varane though…..small but definitely better signs. And as Stephan has shown, if you do well, you play.

Possibly. But you are among those (rightly) celebrating the constant mantra about standards. Yes we ideally sell Varane for a profit and that won’t happen in our reserves. But it wasn’t really happening last season when he was getting plenty of game time. Demanding higher standards will inevitably result in some casualties: Walsh bombed out, Kolli publicly dressed down for his fitness, Mbengue (just pre injury) dropped for Adamson. The better players, like Kone on Saturday, will take on board the criticism and bounce back. Ultimately competition for places tends to lead to improved league position and ultimately that should increase the value of a lot of our players.
Just one question on Kamara, who has been excellent IMHO: some say we have an option to buy but the official announcement from memory only referred to a loan?

Is quite a drop for Varane to go from the chosen next golden child to can't get in the team. Would agree he has shown signs recently of improving, certainly trying more forward passes but the difference between him and Kamara is massive at the moment. I guess with Madsen out he'll get a run in the side so has a chance to show what he can do

I remember reading that Nourry doesn't like loans that don't have something in it, like a purchase agreement, as otherwise it only benefits the player and other team.
I do worry with Kamara that we might see another Stefan Johanson scenario. Where a loan proves his fitness and ability. Rewarded with a contract, and foot off the gas, shows you why the player was available for loan...

Watch Southampton target Varane on Saturday. They'll give him zero time on the ball and then watch him lose it.

Still think a fit Burrell, Chair, Madsen and Lampety start. JCS borderline. But our “best 11” is not as clear cut as it was. Is Cirkin or Kember “first choice”? Neither would regard himself as a stand in the way Esquidinia must have done. The biggest change is we probably now have 8/9 players who can step in who are v nearly as good as the one he replaces. There used to be such a gulf.
Very much agree with all of that.
We live in a world of squads rather than 1st XIs these days. For a long time we really struggled with that as a club, even a small number of injuries could really drag down the quality of the team.
This year we do seem to have more depth (and just as well really)
Probably the most impressive thing is that a couple of those aren't due to being clever n the transfer market, but down to players we already have stepping up a level.

He didn’t do that with RND. He helped us out for a season, we helped get him match fit and we said goodbye and thanks and upgraded to the Boy.
It’s always a danger but not really much evidence that he likes to sign older players on a permanent contract.
