| Where we fail - Wingers as back up defenders 07:55 - Nov 1 with 1302 views | numptydumpty | Vale and Poku are both very poor defensively. Definitely an issue we need to address. Dembele and Saito likewise. Our only wide man that can defend as well is Paul Smyth. Maybe Steve Bould needs extra time on the training pitch with these guys doing defensive drills. We have four or five decent full backs, but against the better teams, we need our wide men up top to help, because the full backs can't do it all alone. Definitely for me an issue that needs looking at. Saints opened us up on the flanks with ease yesterday !! [Post edited 1 Nov 7:56]

Loose like we did yesterday and everyone, and I mean everyone, would be questioning the Manager. However, yesterday we were playing a very decent team in Southampton and we were playing away from home. Perhaps playing the same line up would be OK but tactically, with two very forward thinking players up front, was not a good idea. I am not a 'fan' of Vale so I would probably of played Smyth wide (giving Boy some assistance) & replaced Vale with JCS and moving Edwards from CB to sit in front of the back 4 giving us a far more cover for the defence.

What am I missing about this individual & what does JS see in him?? I do not believe that he will be starting again v Burnley.

Need to have a midfield 3 of Madsen, Kamara and Edwards (or Varane). And then JCS and Dunne at the back. Unfortunately we didn’t have players available to do that.
| Where we fail - Wingers as back up defenders on 08:51 - Nov 1 with 1073 views | stevec | Didn’t JS have form on this at previous clubs, a bit ropey at setting up defensively in games where you know you’ll be up against it. He’s doing a very good job overall, so we might just have to suffer these aberrations once in a while. We know the type of team that will roll us over, have done for some time to be fair, way before JS showed up. 2 points from the top 5 last year, a little better this year although I’m not convinced Swansea will be top five come May, does mean we need 2 points a game from the other 18 clubs, which is still a pretty big ask. As you mention, injuries aside, we are sound like for like, but we do need something different that’s designed to snuff out problematic opposition players that cause us problems. At the moment it’s too easy to brisk past the likes of Poku, Saito, Dembele, Vale and it’s the poor old full back who bears the brunt. | | | |

| Where we fail - Wingers as back up defenders on 09:12 - Nov 1 with 996 views | Watford_Ranger | The main issue both yesterday and Birmingham, amongst others, was that the middle of midfield was weak as piss. I can live with Poku not being much help going backwards if he does plenty with the ball (he did nothing with it, as is often the case away) but you lose the middle of midfield and you tend to lose the game. Once they’d sussed ours was crap they took advantage. We all like Kamara but I don’t think he’s athletic enough, away from home to a good team, to play in a two. Varane… well Varane doing Varane things mostly ten yards out of position and ahead of the ball. I get options were limited, it’s a kid or JCS to come in and make the midfield more solid with Edwards but that was always a big risk going to Southampton with just Kamara and Varane just as it was going to Birmingham with Vale/Kamara. We’ve only got one midfielder you’d trust away from home in a two and he was injured for both. | | | |

I've read a bit about how JCS should have played, but I think we all know what a risk that would be, and we have to look at the season, not the match. An aside, but Lloyd being on the bench instead of Obikwu, tells us exactly where he stands in the reckoning right now. I've liked Dembele's recent cameos.

I thought Kemper not at his best yesterday - not fully fit? Considering how he had Bowen in his pocket, he was not nearly as effective yesterday and got turned very easily for the first goal. Fact that Southampton could attack with purpose down both flanks caused us problems too.
| Where we fail - Wingers as back up defenders on 18:59 - Nov 1 with 246 views | Noelmc | Perhaps in tough away games we should turn the issue around and look at defenders as back up wingers. For example on the left play Cirkin ahead of Boy or vice-versa, then on the right Lamptey (if we can get him fit) ahead of Adamson. It should make us more solid and some of our full backs cross as well, if not better, than our wingers. | | | |
| Where we fail - Wingers as back up defenders on 20:58 - Nov 1 with 78 views | VancouverHoop | I'm not sure we have anyone playing as an out-and-out winger do we? At least no one who hugs the touchline. Smyth used to do it under our previous manager, and so did Saito, but not now. It's notable that Smythie has flourished playing more centrally, while Koki's play has declined. | | | |
