A professor writes: yes I think the terminology had to change to accord with equality principles. To emphasise the point, there was once a very crude joke about a female accessory being referred to as a manhole cover.
Amongst the bushes in my mums front garden I inadvertently almost fell down a 6 feet deep hole into the sewers. Seems at some point the thing was nicked, informed the travelling fraternity bolstered their income via local scrap merchants in days gone by.
Wondered if there was a standard unit for replacements but appears from this, there are at least five options. If anyone is clued up enough to know if there’s a standard for sewer covers, most grateful, otherwise it’s back into the holly bushes with a plastic ruler.

There's a TV series right there - a Neanderthal is chased by a sabre-tooth tiger and falls through a hole in time and space and gets stuck in the 1950s, where he shares a flat with Lucille Ball.
A bit like Catweazel but with screwball comedy and a Happy Days style soundtrack.
