Smyth in...and out? 16:08 - Jan 27 with 3636 viewsMyke

Smyth recalled, our decision according to Bowyer, not Charlton's. He then went onto say he couldn't get a game ahead of Washington! Now Bowyer is a canny manager and clearly knows a lot more than me, but I would never see, Washington and Smyth competing for the same position. For me, Smyth is more of a wide player, who likes to come inside to get involved rather than a striker as such, he is also quite diminutive so don't think out and out striker would suit him.
I would like him to stick around for the rest of the season, I think he would bring us some extra energy in the final third, would be useful for pressing, especially for the last 20 minutes. But according to WLS, he is only coming back to go out again to get game time elsewhere.

bore myself talking about Smyth but when you can't fill a subs bench and are struggling to score goals continuing to loan out the likes of Smyth and Shodipo seems barmy to me. Smyth likely to be released in the summer anyway so loaning him out isn't doing us any favours.

What I don't understand is how a team that lacks pace can simply ignore a player who has some, particularly with BOS no longer with us. It seems bizarre that he has barely been given a chance.

I think Smyth not nailing down a regular position, or place in any team, is part of the problem. He looked a lightning winger with a fighting streak in the fleeting appearances for us, but then played a mix of wing and upfront off Billy Kee at Accrington and Akinfenwa at Wycombe. Lost his place to Wheeler at WW and since going to Charlton, fell in and out the team.

Between performance and injuries he hasn't played more than 20 games for anyone over the last 3/4 years... So much to like about him, but with his size he needs to be consistent and nail a specialism, neither of which he seems capable of doing.

Going off topic here (but hey, it's my thread!), seems you were right about Barbet playing LB for Brentford. I looked it up (only wiki, but still), and it would seem he nearly played half his games there, including virtually one full season. So maybe an option after all, although no mention about LWB, mind.

My own theory is that he's never shown himself to be good enough at the other parts of the game. Pace and work-rate are just not enough at this level, I'm afraid.

Well as Clive has pointed out many times in the past, there's a reason players end up at Rangers..........they're flawed. Can't help but think this has a bit of the 'Michael Doughty syndrome' about it. Did ok ish for us on a few occassions, goes out on loan and suddenly he's the answer to various problems with the current squad and people are screaming for him to be recalled. Happy to be proved wrong, hope he breaks into our team and plays like a man possessed but the evidence suggests it's unlikely.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that he's the answer to our problems, just that we are down one winger due to BOS and weren't able to name a full sub bench the other day so maybe it might be a good idea to at least have him on the bench.

If we can get someone better on loan then fine, let's do that, but no sign so far.

Having Smyth, Thomas and Shodipo on the books and none of them getting any game time is frustrating, play 'em or sell 'em.

Great post!

In which case not much point bringing him back then is there?

Has to be a point when we decide that he's not for us isn't there?

Can see your point if it was a position we were light in but we have Albert, Willock, Thomas plus Shodipo if we want to use him.

532 doesn’t leave room for either Smyth or Shodipo - going hot and heavy on Austin, Johansen and De Wijs has committed us to that system so recalling them is pointless, for all parties.

Go back a little while and people were crying out for Hamelainen to be brought back from loan and put in our first team.

Agree with this, happens so frequently, the clamor for Niko H was ridiculous.

If he is struggling to get in sides a division below the Championship what is the likelihood of him being able to improve our team, we need much more than just pace.

One of those kind of players we often see at QPR who are not very good but because they are not in the team by being on loan or injured they are seen as a better player than they are by the fans.

There's a reason he's on loan at League One and not getting a game.

None of those options are particularly quick and in Thomas case I'm not sure Warburton realises he is still here. It doesn't hurt to have back up players in case of injury/suspension.

for me I just can't see the point of loaning someone out who is out of contract in the summer, If we don't want him and have made our minds up just release him now.

not sure many were crying out for him to come in. When it was clear Manning wasn't going to play and it was Niko or Lee Wallace it's fair to say majority seemed to want him given a chance but not sure anyone was ever crying out for him to get in the team

No disrespect to you or Clive but I just don't buy your initial sentence. Sure, there's the occasional talent such as Adel Taraabt or Ravel Morrison who should be playing at a higher level but end up at clubs like QPR because of character flaws. However, they are the exception not the rule. QPR is a well established professional football club in one of the best leagues in world football, it is not a Sunday league pub team. With solid foundations, sound planning and decent scouting it should be able to source talented footballers and, indeed, has a rich history of doing so in the past. Take the team that were promoted in 2011, for example. Was every player in that squad flawed? Far from it.

All that being said, I do agree with your assessment of Smyth. He hasn't delivered, either at QPR or on loan, and isn't the answer to our problems.

No they weren't, an odd person may have questioned what he was doing but we had Manning in the role with Wallace as back up. We couldn't recall him after January anyway. He came back when the Scottish season ended but was ineligible to play.

Unlike Smyth, Hamalainen did have a successful loan, in the SPL with Kilmarnock, albeit it was his first good one!
