ARSENAL V QPR 1974 two questions..... on 13:03 - Mar 14 with 1774 views | CamberleyR | In answer to the OP, the signing of Don Masson by Dave Sexton in the December of that season changed it around. He was the final piece of the jigsaw, someone able to pick a pass in the attacking third. His set piece delivery either from corners of free kicks was also top class as well. It was amazing that he'd never played top flight football until he came to Rangers. [Post edited 14 Mar 2021 13:06]

ARSENAL V QPR 1974 two questions..... on 13:16 - Mar 14 with 1726 views | 2Thomas2Bowles | Shirt and Badge To do with makers Admiral and Umbro switching at the time. In 1974 Rangers adopted Admiral as their kit supplier, beginning a period of bewildering variations: the contract with Admiral lasted for half the season before unbranded shirts, with white collars replaced them. At the end of the season, the team were wearing Umbro. In the summer of 1975, the team were photographed wearing Adidas shirts, the first time an English team had worn the iconic trefoil logo and three-stripe trim. At the time, Adidas were expanding and had started to produce football strips in addition to their traditional qpr crest 1975business of football boots. They had a contractual arrangement with Umbro at the time and it was the English company that supplied the team's strip for the following season, which for the first time, featured the club badge. From October the hoops were noticeably more narrow and the crew neck was in blue. In 1976 Rangers turned out in Adidas (without a crest): for the first match they wore narrow hoops from Adidas' stock before a more traditional width was delivered in time for their second game.

ARSENAL V QPR 1974 two questions..... on 16:13 - Mar 14 with 1532 views | terryb | Unbeaten after the first two games of the season, drawing away to Sheffield United & then winning at Elland Road. I think the first home match was a 1-0 defeat to Stoke when Hurst scored with their only attack of the game in the last minute! A bad run saw us at/towards the bottom of the table until we won at home to top of the league Ipswich. After signing Don Masson we were the best side in the country for a couple of months, which was widely acknowledged in the game. The FA Cup was there for our taking until West Ham butchered us at Upton park in the 5th round. From memory we ended up with eight fit players on the pitch plus three walking wounded. From memory we had used our only sub in the first ten minutes. Stanley & Dave Thomas were subjected to the "innocent" tackles that were more associated with Ron Harris & Blind Eddie (especially when playing against Leeds). Thank you messrs Bonds, Taylor, Lampard & Robson! The club badge had been changed in the previous few seasons & most supporters regarded the previous badge (Hammersmith coat of arms) as our correct one. Hammersmith council disagreed! I still refuse to accept any badge for my club since the HCOA as legitimate! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Was at Upton Park for that game. Disgraceful performance from a club that was supposed to pride itself in playing proper football. Lampard was shown up for the thug was. Never liked them since.

Away to Carlisle on 22/2/75. My wedding day! The date was carefully chosen as I wouldn't be going to the Scottish borders & my wife to be, wasn't going to Old Trafford following Ipswich. She had done that the previous season. My father did announce the two results at the reception! Carlisle had won at Stamford Bridge on the opening day to go top of the league.

Spot on, but young Brian beat you to it. Though an additional point would have been awarded if you'd spotted they'd called the table the Premier League.

ARSENAL V QPR 1974 two questions..... on 09:15 - Mar 15 with 1132 views | TheChef | We seemed to lose it pretty quickly too, 76/77 season we were not so hot in the League, only just avoided relegation in 77/78, relegated in 78/79. I suppose losing Sexton to ManU in the summer of '77 didn't really help.

The 73/74 season was the first for promoting/relegating three teams. Two up, two down prior to that.

John Hollins was a great signing for £80k by Dave Sexton in the summer of 1975, signed after the filth had just been relegated. A bit of an unsung player, he was just what our midfield needed adding a bit of steel, although he could also play a bit. He allowed the likes of Gerry Francis and Don Masson to get forward and supply our brilliant forward line. He was a very good servant for four seasons and we probably let him go too soon as he then went on to have four good seasons for Arsenal. Overall he played in the top flight for nearly 20 years over 700 games (and played once for England when England had an abundance of midfield talent) so must have been decent.
