I’ve seen a photo somewhere (old programme?) of the players in full kit mixing concrete whilst on the stand during construction! Can you imagine that now? Not only are they all pampered but H&S you’d need more PPI than a squaddie going into battle!!

Yeah, seen that concrete mixing pic as well. Can you imagine how pissed the residents of the top floor in those blocks were at losing their view, must have been able to see three quarters of the pitch!
I can vaguely remember scrambling up the mud bank to the terracing on SAR towards the end of one season then sitting in a brand new SAR stand early the next season (Chelsea first league game, was it?).
How quick did Rangers get that stand up, don’t remember much of a gap.

Initially the single upper tier stand would move from left to right and right to left following the passage of play as long as florins, groats, guineas (??) were fed into a meter.

Work started after we were promoted at Villa Park in May 1968 & was opened on 14th Septmeber 1968. A period of four months!
I think the expectation was that it would have been ready for the Leicester game on the first day of the season..

In the summer holidays, in the late 1950s, I was taken to the ground by my father. We watched the players training on rough ground, behind what was then a bank of open tracing, on the South Africa Road side. Then, in the next decade, the stand was built there. Met director Alec Farmer and captain Tony Ingham that day. Magic.

Yeh, I tried it.
It was as bad as that Rameses' Revenge puke-maker at Chessington.
