I was going to agree with you, given its an award by a French Football publication, but just had a quick look and Ronaldo won it in 2008 when at Man Utd. Since 2016 its been won by either Real or Barca players all but once (the sole exception being last year when Messi won it for PSG). Difficult to argue that anyone was better than Messi or Ronaldo, but quite notable that there has generally been a low showing of Prem players in the top 3. You'll be happy then that number 2 and 3 this year were Mane and De Bruyne.

Never knowingly understood

Some of our players over the years have won the Balloon Door.

Never knowingly right.

it's usually won by either a champions league winner or if someone does something special in a world cup. If Liverpool had won the final I think either Salah or Mane might have won it

I’ve always should be an award for most headed goals. And as the French for forehead is ‘front’ what better name for the award than the Front d’Or

Cannavaro won it one year after they won the world cup (2006), Modric won it a few years ago as welll but it's normally attacking players

In 2009, Charlie Austin scored 48 goals in 42 games for Poole Town in the Wessex League. Thus winning for himself the coveted Durdle d’Or.

Never understood the big fuss about this award, it's just some magazine in France that gives it out.

May as well go on about who is on the front cover of Shoot this month.

Exactly. I mean, no-one in France cares who wins the Readers' Wives Award. It's just one rule for respected French sporting magazines and another for low-rent, home-brewed art pamphlets!

Couldn't make it up, we're going to Hell in a hand cart etc.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

As for 1960’s footballers wives ….

I can’t work out if Liz McLean (Scottish footballer’s wife) made cocktails or worked in a nuclear power plant.

"They first met when she was 15, but she told George she was 17"

A likely story, if ever I heard one!

Wasn't she on 'plaid your cards right'?
