Happy birthday Terry Venables on 09:43 - Jan 6 with 3198 views | DWQPR | I suspect that Venners would say 80 years young. You wonder what that team he was building in the 80’s could have got to had he not fallen out with Gregory. First year back in Division One and finishing 5th is one hell of an achievement, only 7 points off the champions, Liverpool, 4 points way from second and one a point behind Forest and ManUre in third and fourth. 10 points above Arsenal in 6th. A few more astute signings the next season could have really seen us challenging with Venners in charge. Sadly wasn’t to be. Happy birthday El Tel!

Did he fall out with Gregory? My memory was that Gregory had agreed to sell him the club before Barcelona came calling

I believe that Venables had asked him for a par rise, the sale didn’t materialise. Gregory refused point blank and a few days later Venables went back and said that he had received a better offer from Barcelona. Gregory thought he was calling his bluff and said to go ahead.

Much better coach than businessman so that might have been for the best.

Just love the fact that Barcelona poached the QPR manager. Like something out of Championship Manager. That will never happen again!

Happy birthday Terry Venables on 11:27 - Jan 6 with 3028 views | RangersDave | To be fair, he wasnt a bad player either. I remember a free kick he took, where some genius had worked out a set play. half way between the corner of the away box (right side) and the half way line. Venners put his toe under the ball, lifted it over their defence, and on of our guys turned as it dropped and wellied it home. It was disallowed for offside , he took it again, and this time the trick worked and a goal which was on MOTD, along with him looking at the SAR tv camera and smiling and raising his eyebrows in fun as he was being booked. Thought he was a great player in a very good team.

Somehow missed this when it first came out. Every word is true, and I am another one of those responding to Terry’s genius as a player and manager. Sad he couldn’t handle the money part. Otherwise it would be Sir Terry-and fully justified too.

Happy birthday Terry Venables on 13:45 - Jan 6 with 2744 views | NewBee | Quite aside from all his other known qualities as a manager/coach, Venables is also by some way the best TV pundit I've ever seen. Others usually just tell you what you've just seen eg "That was a great run down the right and he delivered it just where the striker likes it etc" Whereas Venables would tell you why you've just seen it e:g. "Their manager noticed that the opposing left midfielder was struggling and at half time rearranged his midfield to put another body in that area, meaning that when the winger went on his run, there was space in behind for him to exploit" And it wasn't just tactics, lso also had great insight into players' psychology - two of my favourites are: "Football doesn't build character, it reveals it" and "The last thing you've learnt on the training ground is the first thing you forget on the pitch." Very, very clever man, who should have been England manager for a decade. [Post edited 6 Jan 2023 13:49]

Watched the biography entitled “A Man Can Dream” (2021) a couple of weeks ago and it’s very good although there’s a long wait till we’re properly mentioned. Happy birthday Terry. Just remembered that the first leather football I bought was a yellow and white diamond ball stamped with the names “Morgan and Venables”-never stayed inflated though! [Post edited 7 Jan 2023 9:21]

He was also the author of "They used to play on grass" while he was a player for us. The story of a South London team who reached the final of the British Cup (seemed very similar to Palace) after beating a Glasgow side at Hampden in the semi final. All pitches had been changed to artificial surfaces. A pity that ours wasn't as good as TV envisioned!
Happy birthday Terry Venables on 10:19 - Jan 7 with 2184 views | Pikey | Not sure the greatest ever but one of the very best. If we go back to the start of our climb from anonymity you have to consider Alec Stock ( our first real trophies and one at Wembley) then of course Dave Sexton who managed our greatest ever team and was within a whisker of the league title ( poached? by Man U pretty comparable to Barcelona in the mid 70s) . But Tels up there with the best.

Thanks Simon for highlighting your article. It's excellent. I was lucky enough to see Venables both play for and manage us. I also attended most of the England Euro 96 matches when he was in charge of the national team. He was a fantastic player and manager and had the gift of making players perform at their highest level. In terms of man-management I'd put only Brian Clough ahead of him in this respect. As for his place in QPR history he will always be fondly remembered and it will be a classic case of 'what might have been' if Barcelona had not come calling. [Post edited 7 Jan 2023 13:25]
