Chair’s penalty… 08:51 - Feb 17 with 1388 viewsHammersmithR

I’ve seen it a few times now. Definitely encroachment from Sunderland players before he makes contact with the ball. This is supposed to see a retake like we saw a number of times in the World Cup. We had this with Wells’s penalty a couple of seasons back against Brum.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

They can't be bothered, much easier to let go.

we still would have lost... but probably by only 2-1

I agree that we still would have lost. It didn't matter. Although our players complained we still missed it. I don't think Sunderland players running in changed the outcome. Chair hit it hard enough but in the direction the keeper was going. It was annoying because I felt the keeper went very slightly early and if he'd looked where the keeper was he probably would have slid it in from where he'd left. Too late now. There was a bizarre feeling of inevitability anyway. I was in the Stan Bowles stand and the whole place on that side if like a library these days, only quieter. Mostly fans looking at their phones and staring into space. Very depressing.

Never knowingly right.

It was also a sh1t pen. Perfect height to be saved.

As soon as I saw he'd designated himself to take it I knew he'd miss. So obvious. Martin should have taken it. Just shows what a shambles we are in that we don't plan these things.

It was a poor penalty - end of.

As for, if the penalty was scored......who knows what the score of the match would have been - goals change games.

The 2nd sentence is spot on.

The GK movement thing is actually written in the laws now, if penalty is missed, but not saved, doesn't matter if GK moves off his line.

Yes, it was a terrible pen. The Keeper went to his left early leaving the whole right side of the goal open for Chair to aim at. He managed to put it left side at Keeper hight, without much power either. As usual with Chair with the ball at his feet, I don't think he looked up.

I have taken plenty of penalties in my time.....I have never watched the keeper. I always concentrated on striking the ball well and into the corner of the goal, low down.

How many of you guys have taken a penalty and watched the keeper to see what he does???

It isn’t unusual for a set piece by Chair to not beat the first man.

Yeah, agree with this.

It's noticeable that this delaying the penalty is happening more and more, fake injuries, arguments, keeper wandering around, having a drink, all to allow more doubt to fester in the takers mind.

What I do think is that we need to be smarter and have a better routine to handle this. As soon as O'Nien dropped to the floor pretending his leg had fallen off Chair should have walked away and not just stood there with the ball. Someone else should have protected the penalty spot from being damaged. Walk away and then reset or even change the taker. Turn up at the spot at the last minute when everyone else is ready.

I know it's tough for this lot of players to be smart but at least try to give yourself the best chances.

Professional footballers really should have the ability to put the ball in one of the top corners. Honestly, that should be no excuse for this.

It was an absolutely horrifically bad penalty.

Exactly the same gazza.

I was even stupid enough at times to tell the goalkeeper which part of the net the ball would hit! It was always about me, not him.

Personally think chair is overrated, has been poor since coming back from the World Cup.

He’s done nothing this season to show he is PL class.

in fairness to Illy he looks a completely different player when playing alongside a fully fit Chrissy Willock. So maybe being surrounded by quality players would bring out the best in him?

Good post Toast_R the exact thing that crossed my mind the second it was awarded.
No Dykes who normally blasts them so we needed Martin to step up and bury it.
Did Chair grab the ball immediatly or was there a discussion ?. Either way he should have never gone anywhere near it.
He sat on the bench at the WC and watched his team win shootouts simply by putting the ball where the kepper is not and he had the whole goal to slip it low and fairly hard into .
Did we plan for penalties without Dykes or did we figure (like our fans ) we never get any from refs anyway .
We needed that penalty scored it would have given hope but hope left the building
