Just noticed that in the Germany semi final Venables made NO substitutions for the whole 120 minutes which is unthinkable nowadays. Benefit of hindsight but you’ve got to wonder whether fresh legs might’ve won us the game without it going to the ultimately unsuccessful penalties. |  | | |

Still maintain El Tel missed a trick not bringing on Les during the semi-final v Germany with half an hour to go.

Agreed.
Game seemed to play out in slow motion in the 2nd half especially when Gazza had that chance to win it.
Loved Venables couldn’t understand why he didn’t lead the team at France 98 same thing happened with Bobby Robson after Italia 90 when Graham Taylor came in. [Post edited 9 Jun 10:32]

Was backpacking here in Sydney at the time. Watched it in I think the Coopers pub in Newtown. I remember feeling a bit flat after failing to win that match.
It all turned on the penalty save in the Scotland game and gazza's wonder goal immediately after that. If McAllister had scored how different it might have been. The Dutch game was just brilliant, we murdered a very good team. Such a shame the way it ended. | | | |

Was a great summer of sport that year, with the Olympics starting a couple of weeks after.
I'd just graduated from Roehampton - I'd had jobs throughout but ended up signing on over that summer.
We had 4 of us in a flat, and our one posh flatmate would get up every morning and put his tie on to go to work at the William Hill on the high street. At which point, every morning like clockwork, he'd try to instil in me the need to find paid employment.
As I picked the remote control up off his bed (his bed was in the living room) and settled in I'd tell him I couldn't possibly get a job until after the Olympics. Drove him nuts. Halcyon days.

Fowler came on as a late sub against Holland and missed an easy header (which would have sent Scotland through) and wasn’t seen again. I know he got a fair number of goals in qualifying later, but that might have blown his chance to play in bigger games.
I managed to get hold of four tickets for the Wembley games but we all missed Switzerland because one of us was getting married. Apart from the football, my strongest memories were Chelsea fans standing on their seats a few rows in front of us singing Rule Britannia while doing Nazi salutes, how huge Helmut Kohl was when he made his appearance at the final, and a couple from the Scotland game: Rocking All Over The World at half time and some Leicester lads going berserk with fury at the sight of Mark McGhee playing in a veterans five a side beforehand. Real straight jacket behaviour! |  | | |
