Like the way we move the ball a lot quicker than we have in previous seasons and Charles is the main instigator of that .
Cirkin looks a real find and was just glad to see Lamptey on the pitch .

Think we used up our quota of mishits and deflections at Pompey, lots of floating shots and keepers dreams today, at some point they’re going to need to learn to put their laces through it.
That’s precisely how Kone handled any opportunities when he turned up last season, not sure what’s happened there.
One other thing, our wingers. When Cirkin came on he’d be constantly looking to put the ball in behind the full back. Now I appreciate by then Saito had done 70 minutes of running about, but at no time was he up on the full back, ready to run in behind. It’s not dissimilar on Poku side and same whether it’s Smyth, Dembele et al. At some point the manager has to get these wingers to gamble, especially now we have a full compliment of players behind more than capable of providing these passes. |  | | |

Great point, Steve. If we start Cirkin, then I’d like to see Smyth ahead of him for that reason, rather than Saito.
I guess Poku had a remit to double up defensively this weekend but it would be very interesting to see more of this on the right too. |  |

All pretty much in agreement; Lamptey was disappointing, Cirkin was good, and it's great to see Madesen back.
I thought the penalty shout on the hour was stronger, and the replays seem to confirm it. Again, an inconsistent ref being inconsistent. |  |

Can’t disagree with any of that.
I thought four subs in one go broke up our rhythm. JS should leave that sort of grand gesture for games we’re losing.
Otherwise a very positive if ultimately frustrating performance. Cirkin looks closer to full whack than Lamptey which is fine because Mbengue is nailing it at right back at the moment. |  | | |

Agree. Although we’re all greedy after the win last week, I surmise that most would have taken 4 points from those two games after the Millwall cup exit.

I still think the Newcastle game was the best we played that season & is possibly the closest comparison, but I immediately went back to 1973 & the 0-0 at home to West Ham. The difference being we put the ball in the net 3 times that night!
I'm another one who thought that the subs didn't help us as we appeared to lose our shape, but that is not a criticism of the players who came on.
Overall, I'm very disappointed that we didn't win, but that is due to deserving to win rather than that we dropped 2 points. Maybe Bolton will be towards the bottom of the league this season, but what a difference in performance from us to what we managed against Wednesday & Oxford the last 2 seasons. | | | |

I was trying to remember which game that was, West Ham or spurs, but you’re right, and very much a day when our young team realised they what they could be capable of.

I guess it's a flaw in my character as I am not so optimistic things are getting any better as the early signs are different season same old crap. Can't win a London derby, check. Can't win a cup tie, check. Can't win a home game early in season against a newly promoted team, check. Can't win a game with more possession, check. Can't put their laces through the ball with shots, check. As the game goes on we get worse after making subs, check. All the usual boxes we have ticked in previous seasons still very much in evidence after just three games.
It is very possible that Bolton is one of the easier home fixtures and we botched it. We should dominate a team who came up via the play offs on our own pitch which we did but no end product. We have failed to win these type of games in the last few years against league 1 new arrivals and gone on to have wretched home form. I sincerely hope this is not another season to follow suit.
Anyone who watched the Brentford game Saturday will have seen when Brentford players wellied shots at the Spurs goal, the keeper palmed shots straight back in the danger zone. Two of the goals came from fierce shots that the keeper couldn't set himself in time and was not able to turn the shots wide of the goal. Contrast that with our powder puff efforts that the Bolton keeper had to deal with. Our players need some practice in kicking a ball for starters.
Anyway that's my words of caution about us and the prospects of improvement as I still see some same old failings affecting our game. I hope they prove me wrong as the season develops to justify optimism of fellow fans but as Northen suggests, only time will tell. |  | | |
