There are some phrases football seems littered with with make no sense at all and are just irritating as a result. My latest hate is the phrase 'tried to play in the right way' and variations on that theme. As if anyone sets out to play in the wrong way, and what exactly is the 'right' way anyway? It's just hot-air b*llocks to fill some time on the TV, and to save whoever's said it from actually thinning about what they're going to say.

What other phrases p*ss people off?

Your right, he is one of the most irritable commentator.

You don't hear it much these days but how about old Tyldesley with... "That Magical Night in Barcelona"?

This one's gone a bit quiet, thank God, always irritated me too

Any phrase you've never heard before in the context that suddenly everyone start to parrot. First noticed some years ago during a tournament when one of the commentators made reference to a team 'setting out their stall'. At least one team in every game after that would be setting out their stall in the first 15 minutes.

Current anti-favourites:
'flat-track bully'
'linked with'
'opens/opening up his body'
'recycling possession'

Mark Hughes seems to have his own private language. A favourite is his use of the term 'the building' to refer to the club.

Hughes on Wilson Palacios: 'He hasn’t really surprised me because my view was always that Wilson was a very good player and I was pleased he was still in the building.'

Transitions. Suddenly appeared and still so new it needs to be explained. "They're so good at the transitions, when possession changes over". Just in case you thought it referred to the Chelsea squad's gender reassignment, or a short spell as a tadpole.

"Last man - he had to go" Last man not mentioned in laws of the game

"That was reckless, had to be a red card" Reckless actually means a yellow card, again read the laws if you're paid to commentate!

"You have to take your chances in the Premier League" Other leagues give you goals without you having to do that do they???!!!

"Just about offside, so just about got that right" He's either offside or not! Correct or not!

"That was a stonewall penalty!"

Don't get me started...

"He's been denied by the post."

No, he's missed the target.

"He's given 110% today".

Mathematically impossible.

Suffering since 1978.

I assumed this had come from some FA coaching manual, or perhaps from soccerball coaches in the USA.

This. Only correct use for this phrase in football terms is a work permit application in which the applicant is subsequently informed by the Royal Mail that they have failed...

Doesn't technically fit the OP criteria, but not exactly worthy of its own thread - what is it with footballers declaring their retirement from international duty??!!**!!

Just feck off into the wilderness why don't you. It never used to happen this way - one day you were selected and the next you were not. Big deal. The overweened, preening egos now need to find a nice quiet spot in the news agenda and declare their retirement so we can all fawn over them. Another pathetic totem of the modern media age. Just p!ss off.

Actually i'm that agitated maybe it is worthy of a thread.

You are correct. It avoids the media pulling Roy apart for not selecting Fat Frank, gives Lampard a sense of control over his destiny and creates a chapter for his ghost written autobiography.

To add to the thread...EPL.
No it's not - it's the Premier League, not the EPL. I don't get confused by Celtic being in the SPL so there's no need to tell me that Villa, Aresnal and ManU play in the EPL. Meaningless fluff to sell overseas TV rights.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end
