Any shop bought cucumber is crap. Home grown English Ridge cucumbers are orgasmic. I had 10 plants on the go this year and everyone loved them. Subtle, cool, great with Cromer crab. Also makes great cold cream of cucumber soup.
The one place it does not belong is in a sandwich. Crab, lobster, herring, mackerel is where it is served best.

I can't understand the hatred for the cucumber. Sidestepping the whole separate issue of misuse of cucumbers, which can never be condoned, there is nothing wrong with cucumber in a sandwich, they give a whole fresh and crunchy taste. If you are talking about sandwich ingredients then the tomato is more of a non starter, if you get them into the sandwich without a mess then one bite and they are squishing everywhere resulting in a limp and soggy sandwich and tomato pips all down your top that you only notice much later, usually when you're in company |  | | |

Going against the general consensus i like a bit of cucumber. Its refreshing. Goes well with cheese in a sandwich, most tinned fish and my personal fave, as a garnish to a decent prawn curry with sliced boiled egg.

I quite like the sliced cucumber that comes with the crispy duck and hoi sin sauce and pancakes from my local Chinese takeaway. That's a good use of cucumber.
I also like their crispy "seaweed" cabbage.
