One of my favourite bands. Dave was a fine keyboardist and a decent person considering the bands early riotous reputation. Never really a punk band, [ the band members could all play instruments. JJ Burnel was a classic trained guitarist and Dave played in a prog rock band] hardly qualifications for punk. More new wave with dark undertones. Dave's influences were Jon Lord and Rick Wakeman. RIP Dave.
There aint half been some clever bastards.

R.I.P Dave exceptional keyboard player right up there with the best
Strange that I was listening to Black and White in the garden this lunchtime and was reminded of just how good he was, then came in and saw the news on the BBC

The least known member of a brilliant band that is rarely ever discussed as one of the best. Disregarded generally beyond a couple of songs. But give me them over The fecking Clash.
I've spoken on here I'm sure of my memories seeing Stranglers live in the very early 80's. Whilst the roadies set up there would be a mixture of punk & reggae played, and then the lights would go and silence for about 30 seconds before they played Waltinblack over the PA, and the band walked on stage about 2 minutes in.
Magical suspense and entrance. Such an underrated band, as other have said.
Happy memories. RIP Dave.

Such sad news when I first heard The Stranglers I thought straight away, yea that'll do for me. I cant quite pick a favourite song La Folie was gorgeous I've gone for the two following tracks 5 Minutes cos it's powerful and in your face and Duchess cos quite simply I know the words off by heart and I can and do sing along when it comes on the I-pad. A great, great band RIP Dave Greenfield.
My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Original Post....Scottish, just heard a bloke on the radio claim he died in a hospital battling a serious heart disease that he was unlikely to recover from?
But, RIP to the man, saw ‘em live a half a dozen plus times, never my cup of tea but a lot of good looking girls liked them.

Great choices.
I love The Raven album, don't know why it isn't known as a classic and Duchess is such a classic pop song. Maybe if the band hadn't have been so identified with punk it'd be recognised as such.

Two great choices.
I managed to get a copy of Raven with the 3D cover.
The first proper gig I want to was them in the Edinburgh Playhouse in 79, I think.
Feels extremely nerdy to write it but I actually joined their fan club. I was 15 at the time. That's my excuse.
That and spray painting their logo on my Adidas school bag.
Well, bollox to this virus. First band I ever saw. Being involved with punk was both a boon and a curse to them, I think. Gave them an audience but maybe weren't taken quite as seriously as they should have been.
First three albums are all great but Golden Brown is probably their best song and most of that was down to DG. RIP.
A cracking band, saw them first time back in the late 70s just offthe Tottenham Court Road, ago in Reading. Dave was an amazing keyboard player, mesmerising to watch and listen to even last year.
This will give people an idea if they don't already know:
RIP Dave
