Ronnie O'Sullivan on snooker today. Superbly funny.

This got me thinking. What sports do you think are utter nonsense?
I mean totally beyond your comprehension.

I'll start with American football. A lad throws a crooked ball between his legs to a lad who throws the ball to a lad that catches it. Everyone goes mental. For four hours.

I always used to think Baseball was pretty crap, until I was in America one time and some friends persuaded me to come along to a game with them - the Philadelphia Phillies, featuring the great Pete Rose.

It was even worse than I feared!

I used to love a relaxing day out at the baseball. Granted there can be long stretches of nothingness with just a few exciting moments along the way but tbh how many sports are always exciting?

By contrast, I went to an Ice Hockey game in NY - basically because I wanted to be able to say I'd been to the Madison Square Garden.

After I'd got my eye in to the incredible speed of the game, it was absolutely thrilling. The atmosphere amongst the fans was top-notch, too - a bit like a really good football crowd.

The other sport which really surprised me was (don't laugh) Polo. You know the one wth the ponies and the toffs etc.

I was driving back from a day out of London one Sunday afternoon, and passing through Ham Common, we came to a bit of a crowd parked up. We stopped out of curiousity and realised that a polo game was starting and so watched for a bit.

I have to say that even as a non-equestrian, I thought the skill, stamina and courage of those guys, rich gits or no, was breathtaking.

Really interesting you say that - on a work trip to NYC we went to a Rangers game at MSG and it was awful. Crowd sang when the tannoy did the "dur dur dur dur" then went back to sitting in silence. We were in the gods and could hear the puck!

Rangers tied late on to go to overtime and I've never felt more crushed

EDIT: I do remember it was sponsored by Choc'o'full of Nuts as there was an ad every 3 minutes

Any sport you don't like is crap... even though it isn't.

The grass is always greener.

Maybe ice hockey crowds are up and down then: great when their team/the game is great, but crap when the team/game is crap?

Btw, it wasn't til afterwards that I found out that this wasn't the MSG where eg Ali fought Frazier in "The Fight of the Century", along with all those other great sporting moments.

It's actually the fourth venue to bear the name, on the third different site!

Yes, the current site destroyed the old Penn Station in one of the great acts of culutral vandalism

I find with sport that unless you are emotionally invested in some way its difficult to really enjoy it.

Seeing sport live I always enjoy, in 2014 me & Mrs were lucky enough to get quite a few tickets to different events for Glasgow Commonwealth Games, we got to see Netball, Badminton twice and Squash, including medal matches in the final two. I dont think I've watched any of those sports since but seeing them live and people reaching the pinnacle of their sports was very worthwhile and really cracking entertainment.

In the last couple of years we've started supporting Leicester Riders in the British Basketball League - the BBL is probably the equivalent of the Southern Premier League if you consider NBA the Premiership, but they're our team and really accessible and not particularly expensive to watch so we enjoy it. Even though games can be a case of being decided by who misses the most!

Boxing.

I don't get why it's enjoyable to cheer on someone to give someone else concussion - which always risks brain damage.

And I can't stand it when you see the blood flying across the room.

Yuck.

I can watch most sports at a push. Not keen on American sports like baseball and American Football though. There seems to be a lot of time when nothing happens. And that's from someone who likes test cricket.

Agree about boxing. I put that in a separate category with horse racing and other blood sports, which I detest. Boxing may be slightly different in that the contestants at least have a choice, but like you I find it sickening.

Basketball is the only major team sport I can’t enjoy at all.

By contrast, I’m not really moved by individual sport, with the exception of boxing and occasionally tennis. No time at all for motor sport, golf, athletics, horses...

Cannot stand tennis but give a definition of what is sport that precludes tennis.

Good question, the Global Association of International Sports Federations has these criteria:

The sport proposed should include an element of competition.
The sport should not rely on any element of "luck" specifically integrated into the sport.
The sport should not be judged to pose an undue risk to the health and safety of its athletes or participants.
The sport should not be tennis.
The sport proposed should in no way be harmful to any living creature.
The sport should not rely on equipment that is provided by a single supplier.

I think 50:22 and waist high tackles could massively open the game up

Waist high tackles only is a great idea. The 50:22 thing i hadn't heard about and not sure what the impact would be, there seems to be enough kicking already?

Pinched from RL’s 40:20. If you kick from your own half into touch inside the oppo 22 on the bounce you get the throw in. The theory is that the defenders have to drop a couple of players back to cover deep kicks rather than stringing everyone across the pitch in a solid line. In RL it also creates an attacking position from a period of ping pong.

Pretty much anything that the Yanks cream themselves over is shîte. American football. Given that they hardly kick the oversized testi immediately makes me laugh at the name. A sport made specifically for four hours of TV advertising. And they had the nerve to rebrand football as soccer! Wânkers.

Baseball. PE in junior school playing rounders was infinitely more exciting with many more home runs.

Basketball. Total bollôcks that excludes any human under the height of seven foot. Back and forth, back and forth all evening. Seen more excitement watching two kids play conkers.

Got to agree with:

FM1
American Football
Basketball
Baseball
Dressage
But Tennis most of all

Controversial opinion: football is a very boring game to the casual fan punctuated by moments of extreme joy. That dullness is what makes those moments so great.

I expected to hate the NFL and basketball when I came to the US for reasons above. But actually now I love them. Once you get into the nuances both of them are fascinating, especially the little details of the NFL. Think of it more as a chess match combined with occasional flashes of incredible athletic ability.

And basketball, for the bad rap it gets about always scoring, probably only about 50% of the time ends up in a score. So there is some drama, albeit rarely reaching the "highs" of football. One problem is that in very close games the last "2 minutes" can stretch on for half an hour because the teams deliberately foul each other to stop the game.

The one advantage football has is that unless you're three goals down there's always a hope even a small one, that you can get back in the game. Not necessarily true for basketball or NFL which can be when they get to be more of a chore.

What Sheen said. Its a more potent attacking platform that 20 heavy carries in a row, players have to drop out of the line to cover and plus potential for big hail Mary plays at the end of games
