Ronnie O'Sullivan on snooker today. Superbly funny.
This got me thinking. What sports do you think are utter nonsense? I mean totally beyond your comprehension.
I'll start with American football. A lad throws a crooked ball between his legs to a lad who throws the ball to a lad that catches it. Everyone goes mental. For four hours.

I worked in Germany many years ago and one of the members of the family I was staying with was a massive handball fan, so I agreed to go along with him a few times when he was playing in friendly games.
It is a weird game. I am no expert but the defending team seem to do their utmost to keep the opposition out of the shooting zone, which means that the attacking team try all sorts of feints and other tricks to sneak into the zone and then let fly. It's pretty hairy, especially for the goalkeeper.
Metallica, are you sure this doesn't appeal to you?
That is superb.

Bowls also produced one of the great sporting quotations from Margaret Johnston, apparently the greatest female lawn bowler the game has ever known.
After having won everything in the game over a couple of decades, Johnston once withdrew from the Ireland team preparing for a tournament, because the team psychologist wanted her to prepare mentally for combat by lying flat on a towel for an hour and meditating.
Not having any time for "nonsense" like that, she replied: 'I told them that if I'm going to lie on my back for an hour I would hope I'd be enjoying myself.'
I come from a different perspective since I'm from the States. Basketball was my favorite sport, and it's still up there with football. I played growing up so I understand the intricacies of the sport and the athletic displays are something to behold. Football is probably No. 1 for me now because it's one I'm still trying to comprehend. I'm not totally well-versed in different formations and the strengths and weakness of playing philosophies, so it makes it all really fascinating for me to watch.
I watch a lot of American football, but agree that the endless commercial breaks really affect my enthusiasm for the sport.
As far as crap sports are concerned... anything involving auto racing is on my list. And golf. Definitely golf.

F1 for me every time. I remember switching over last season and someone, probably Hamilton had something ike a 2 second lead with a dozen laps left and the commentator basically said it's all over unless he fcuks it up or had a mechanical/tyre failure..It's hardly wheel to wheel racing
I'm a huge MotoGP fan where in qualifying last weekend the Top 12 were separated by less than a 1/4 of a second.
I've seen some amazing racing over the years where there's been multiple overtakes for the lead in the last couple of laps, just google the highlights of Rossi v Lorenzo at Barcelona 2009..now that's racing.

Baseball. We have something similar in UK, but it's only played by pre-pubescent girls.

I always found ice hockey on TV to be unwatchable until HD came along - could not see the puck. Couldn't see it that much better live but then I was fairly high up...
It may have been mentioned but some sports just don't lend themselves to cameras. Squash is quite enjoyable but unwatchable. Same with most swimming I think - just a load of splashing around far as I can see.
I have it in mind to get into bowls when I get older - will get me out of the house and I'm sure there's a good amount of political scandal and backbiting at most clubs to keep people on their toes. Everyone leering at 72 year old Marjorie who's kept herself trim with twice weekly auqaerobics.
This is still the best bowls related moment ever:
Don't wait until you get older. Get in to Bowls now if you can! Contrary to popular belief, it is by no means "an old mans sport"!!
To be fair, that clip which is during the World Indoor Championships does our sport no favours at all!! And it isn't a true reflection of what the game is about and the demographic. To get a proper idea of what bowls is about, you'd need to watch a team event (pairs, triples, fours) at the nationals which are held at Leamington Spa, or an Inter County match. The rivalry is fierce. They really are great games to be involved in at that level. Playing with and against internationals.
What is pretty unique about bowls is that anyone of any age, gender or fitness can play it. And yes a lot of older people play it (because it's one of very few sports that's enables older people to play), but the majority of these people have been playing it for years from when they were much younger. I'm 45 and have been playing since I was 10. I've grown up playing the game with others of similar age and some older, all with varying degrees of success.
There's so many different levels you can play at. From hobby level, club comp level, local league level, right the way through to county and international level. It's an incredibly social sport too, beer is cheaper than pubs!! And you come across people of all ages and backgrounds that you wouldn't come across otherwise.
And the amount of people that do take it up maybe in the 40'-50's wish they'ed got in to it earlier.
It's a great activity for either a hobby or if you want to take it up competitively, and it's also good outdoor activity and exercise.
So you don't need to wait to take it up, DO IT NOW!! You won't regret it.

Neil Roberts used to love it too. I used to meet him up there for a few drinks and a bowl. i never got hooked as I didn't have the time but if I'd stayed in London i think I'd have gotten into it. I think it's a cracking sport/pastime/thingy.

I like F1, there's a lot besides the wheel to wheel racing like strategy and mechanical sides of things which I find interesting. Admittedly the races can vary between thrilling and sleep inducing. Some races the midfield battle is more interesting than the lead. One of my pet hates is that when you watching two drivers battle it out for the last point (maybe not even that) on the last lap and the director decides to cut away from that in order to show you the leader cross the line with nobody within 5 seconds of him.
Anyway, the rule changes coming up should make it a more level playing field and allow for more overtaking. Generally speaking across the weekend the F2 and F3 races give you more wheel to wheel entertainment which is the best part. It's why I can never really get into rally driving, yeah he's flying along going sideways and it's dusty and he's nearly taken out a photographer but there's no overtaking so it's all just a bit pointless.

I included that Barcelona 2009 race as my favourite non-football moment in a recent thread of the same. Amazing last few laps and I think Lorenzo nerfed it up entering the last corner. Just went to the left a few inches too much. That’s all in needed and Rossi was in. Too much speed coming out of tne corner but slammed the door shut in front of Lorenzo to stop him from taking it back. Amazing stuff from both riders.

A lot of sport requires effort to understand and then enjoy though. I used to dislike some of those mentioned above but devote a bit of time to them and you will usually get it. NFL is a good example - when you first see it it seems awful - so slow and then when there is a play everything goes 100 miles an hour and you cannot work out what just happened. But if you give it a bit of time there is a lot of clever stuff going on and a lot of the plays get pinched by rugby union and league. I still need someone to explain NFL and cricket to me but i enjoy watching them. Rugby i understand maybe 50% of the time which seems not too bad. Football watched live - what percentage of ref calls would you get right? Complexity is a lot of the beauty of sport.
Oh and Ronnie is incredible but a total knobend
NFL is the best sport there is to watch.
You're dead right, Ronnie is a complete pillock. Best player in history, what an exciting talent, but such a spoilt, ungrateful, whingeing dickhead. Can't stand the guy (even though i cheer for him), never stops moaning, needs a slap. He's never funny, only rude. There's a difference.

Dorset is the place to go for proper skittles,or at least it used to be in the 80’s when I lived in Weymouth for a while. None of this just rolling them, they launch themselves, ball and all from the back of the mat. Like most good things it’s probably died off a bit now as a lot of the older pubs have shut down,or turned into gastro pubs.
Just googled it and it’s called the Dorset Flop.We had some great nights watching and playing the game down there.

Neil was a VERY good bowler. I played with him for a few years in County comps in the early/mid 90's.
Did you have a go with him at Shepherds Bush Cricket Club (no longer around) or West London Bowling Club (my ex club) which is just off North Pole Road/Barlby Road?

Great to hear that mate. You'd be made very welcome whichever club you go to.
Anything you need to know, give me a shout. Happy to give you any pointers/advice.
Where are you located by the way? Is it as per your name (Brooklyn)? Or am I reading too much in to that?!
Cheers mate, I'll do that.
Brooklyn from 1999 until 2017, now in the Motherfcukin Chonx. (Sorry I mean Chiswick).
Haven't bothered changing my name because it's too much of a faff and the many years of high level premium quality posting I'd already done on here would be lost to the world. :)
(Are you the same W7 that was on here years ago?)

Aaaaah! Not too far away from me then. Hanwell/Boston Manor.
You're more than welcome to come along to my club which is West Ealing BC for a roll up/beer. It's only a 2min walk from The Harvester on Boston Manor road. Could do with another R. Surrounded by bloody Chelsea, Brentford, Fulham and Liverpool!
Friendly bunch, like a beer. But we're also one of the stronger clubs in the County so we're competitive too.
If you're interested, give me a shout and we'll sort something out.
Yes am the same W7. Just not as active on here as I use to be.

North Pole Road. Just down from The Pav. Which I'm pretty sure we thought rude to pass.

Oh, oh (puts hand up) I just remembered something: I invented my own, more dangerous version of cricket.
Some team mates were giving me throw downs before I went into bat and then it came to me: I will stand behind the slip catching cradle (a device which you hurl a cricket ball at and it deflects it in random directions) and will try to play the throw downs after the cradle has redirected them.
Let me add right now that I would not recommend it...but man alive, it spiced up my little practice session. The balls were coming at me at all sorts of heights. Very exhilarating and good preparation for if one of the West Indies' battery of pacemen happened to be passing our cricket ground in leafy Oxfordshire and fancied a few overs for the opposition.
"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

It's funny that you say "constant need to change rules to keep things safe". Every time I watch rugby (union) over the last decade or so it seems more and more brutal.
Bigger, fitter, stronger fitness freaks knocking shut out of each other. Completely devoid of the subtleties my (Welsh) pe teachers used to try to instill.
