Ronnie O'Sullivan on snooker today. Superbly funny.
This got me thinking. What sports do you think are utter nonsense? I mean totally beyond your comprehension.
I'll start with American football. A lad throws a crooked ball between his legs to a lad who throws the ball to a lad that catches it. Everyone goes mental. For four hours.

Good question, the Global Association of International Sports Federations has these criteria:
The sport proposed should include an element of competition. The sport should not rely on any element of "luck" specifically integrated into the sport. The sport should not be judged to pose an undue risk to the health and safety of its athletes or participants. The sport should not be tennis. The sport proposed should in no way be harmful to any living creature. The sport should not rely on equipment that is provided by a single supplier.
I guess number 4 answers the question. Cannot believe I missed that when I last checked

Maybe ice hockey crowds are up and down then: great when their team/the game is great, but crap when the team/game is crap?
Btw, it wasn't til afterwards that I found out that this wasn't the MSG where eg Ali fought Frazier in "The Fight of the Century", along with all those other great sporting moments.
It's actually the fourth venue to bear the name, on the third different site!
I always found ice hockey on TV to be unwatchable until HD came along - could not see the puck. Couldn't see it that much better live but then I was fairly high up...
It may have been mentioned but some sports just don't lend themselves to cameras. Squash is quite enjoyable but unwatchable. Same with most swimming I think - just a load of splashing around far as I can see.
I have it in mind to get into bowls when I get older - will get me out of the house and I'm sure there's a good amount of political scandal and backbiting at most clubs to keep people on their toes. Everyone leering at 72 year old Marjorie who's kept herself trim with twice weekly auqaerobics.
This is still the best bowls related moment ever:

Bowls also produced one of the great sporting quotations from Margaret Johnston, apparently the greatest female lawn bowler the game has ever known.
After having won everything in the game over a couple of decades, Johnston once withdrew from the Ireland team preparing for a tournament, because the team psychologist wanted her to prepare mentally for combat by lying flat on a towel for an hour and meditating.
Not having any time for "nonsense" like that, she replied: 'I told them that if I'm going to lie on my back for an hour I would hope I'd be enjoying myself.'

Agree about boxing. I put that in a separate category with horse racing and other blood sports, which I detest. Boxing may be slightly different in that the contestants at least have a choice, but like you I find it sickening.
The thing about boxing is that it really is a very skillful and athletic sport, so at that level I've no problem with it. But I'm not prepared to sit and watch someone get hit for my entertainment and I'm certainly not going to cheer them on.
If you've boxed yourself then I think you've got the right

The one that bores me rigid is swimming. Obviously you need to be very athletic to be good but isn't there something more interesting to do with that than just go up and down a pool? If you had an opposing team lobbing kippers at you or something it might liven it up.
And ever since Mark Spitz when I was a kid it grids my gears that you can win umpteen Olympic medals by doing basically the same thing slightly differently while Daley Thompson gets one medal for mastering a stack of separate disciplines.
Horse racing - I read a stat that something like 97% of viewers are only interested in it for gambling purposes. So very few are actually watching for the love of horse racing (which is fcking boring). One of those industries that I wouldn't mind dying.
F1 - Forgetting that most races are processions, I don't get the buy-in. You can't go down your local park and have a race with your mates. The drivers are all cosseted millionaires, it's not even like they've come from the streets like football etc. How can you support a Team? There's no geographical buy-in like you'd get with football, or family ties. "Yeah my team of engineers and mechanics are better than yours!" Weirdos.
Golf - places that could be beautiful public parks ruined by people with stupid dress codes.
Union - It could be great and I do like watching the WC and seeing a sport expand. I just find it annoying that they've not got rid of 3/4 players to make room on the field and create space.
One of the reasons I've started watching the NRL is that the 5 tackles mean you have to do something, you can keep just taking tackle after tackle, which surely even unión fans must get bored of watching? Oh and the fans (especially 6N) are holier-than-thou bellends.

Basketball 🀠Run up the end, score Run up the other end, score Run up the end, score Run up the other end, score Run up the end, score Run up the other end, score Run up the end, score Run up the other end, miss
Seems to be based more on losing than winning...
🤷â€â™‚ï¸
I can't watch basketball, the constant squeaking of their shoes makes me feel nauseous.

Spot on dreadful game. Even worse watching it live. I went to see Sydney Swans play many years ago and left at half time.
I've seen Brisbane Lions a couple of times and the boredom was incredible. There doesn't seem to be any rules and the blokes in white coats seem to be able to wander on and off whenever they like. It drags on and on and on.

Curling for me. More fun watching the bloke with the broom sweeping the ice a couple of inches in front of the boulder. Does he get a medal if his boulder thrower wins, or is there just one sweeper for everyone?

I know quite a few fans on here but rugby is a head scratcher for me with their constant need to change rules to keep things safe and the way its so hard to spread the game. I do occasionally enjoy a big match but very few and far between
Like other sports, more enjoyable if you've been WORLD CHAMPIONS, mate
On rugby, craggy island strikes again. We have a transport bubble with Guernsey, and on Sunday a plane full of their rugby players flew over to play ours.
But we forgot to open the airport, and they had to divert and sit in manchester for 2 hours while, apparently, our authorities looked for the bloke with the keys

And the stoppages!! When a goal is kicked there's a good 3 or 4 mins break. And players can come and off as many times as they like!! So boring.

Flip the coin to sports that you thought were crap but are actually very good and then Handball wins for me. Got tickets for 2012 olympics for Sweden v Croatia or something and it was flipping great - fast, aggressive, skillful, relentless. loved it. As with most things, probably better live than TV

Kabaddi - totally weird but strangely fixatious at the same time
Forgot about Kabbadi. Do remember Channel 4 started showing it in the late 80s. Nobody knew what to make of it but people would be walking round school holding their breath muttering "Kabbadi Kabbadi Kabbadi" to each other. Was very odd.

Likely to be controversial given there is a thread on London 2012, but I hate the Olympics.
Competition full of sports that no one cares about and generally aren't that interesting to watch, which people who don't care about sport 99% of the time obsess over. All those people who roll their eyes at you for spending your time watching the football, or even worse prioritising football over something they care about, suddenly become sporting fanatics for two weeks and never follow any of those sports for the next 3 years and 50 weeks. Forget amateur sportspeople, amateur fans. Not having it.
PS - I also like the Snooker and the F1, so yeah, lock me up.

Top Quality rant!
I don't watch the Olympics either - as you say full of sports that I don't usually watch.
I think it's great for getting the couch potatoes and their kids into sports, though, so I think we should keep it out of Room 101.

Thanks. Straight into Room 101 for me though, nonetheless. Those kids who only get into sport as a result of the Olympics will be back on that couch in 30 minutes.

Handball. Have you ever watched it. Why would anybody dedicate any time to it???
I worked in Germany many years ago and one of the members of the family I was staying with was a massive handball fan, so I agreed to go along with him a few times when he was playing in friendly games.
It is a weird game. I am no expert but the defending team seem to do their utmost to keep the opposition out of the shooting zone, which means that the attacking team try all sorts of feints and other tricks to sneak into the zone and then let fly. It's pretty hairy, especially for the goalkeeper.
Metallica, are you sure this doesn't appeal to you?
