In addition, Manning his mate has gone to Swansea who are soaring high, but Manning stays on the bench and does not play. Also if they get to the Prem no doubt Manning will be loaned back out for £250K to a champ club, thus recouping his transfer fee for Swansea. Thus he can see for Manning there is no real progress, except extra wages as in the future it could be that Bristol City beckons. Lums may think he's got a great second chance here, the potential we stay in the Champ so a Champ club, if his form changes, potential to be sold to a bigger club, can stay in London, a financially stable club not going bust like others, no change to the lifestyle in uncertain times with some extra dosh for the long term. What's not to like? I think if we sell Dieng and loan out Kelly, he will be back in a flash even if the exact same contract is offered and Barnes becomes number 2. If we sell Dieng, big IF. |
None of the QPR jorurnos have denied the Dieng story, which is weird because one usually calls BS if it is the case. But I guess they all have clicks to sell

Which might be what this is all about. Big clubs sniffing around Dieng. Clubs with big money

Kelly heading to Motherwell on loan ? It was announced on Tuesday that goalkeeper Jordan Archer has left to go to Middlesbrough, but the Fir Park club are poised to bring in Liam Kelly on a loan deal from Queens Park Rangers.

| Lumley 'snag' on 14:56 - Jan 5 with 1529 views | Juzzie | One of my neighbor's told me the other day he used to play footie at Uni with a certain Matthew Kilgallon. Although his career was spent as a defender he generally played up front at Uni and literally rans rings around everyone. It was clear he had a talent that made him stand out well above from everyone else. Now, I don't know what people think of him as a footballer but he's clearly not rubbish to have played for Leeds, Sheffield United, Sunderland, Blackburn and Bradford. None of these are little clubs. it feels to me in certain cases it's not that players are $hit, just that there are some that are clearly even better so it makes everyone else look bad. One of the things that has always appealed to me about Queens Park Rangers is their ‘basket caseness’! | |

| Lumley 'snag' on 11:36 - Jan 5 by stevec | Why in gods name would we offer Lumley a new deal? The few decent players we have left are probably banging on their agents door and screaming get me out of this madhouse. The club is completely fcked up. |
So we can get a fee for him rather than him go on a free

A vast majority of players for years and years all played upfront and destroyed us, mere mortals, during their growing years. But these attacking players were not quite as good as the best of the best so, to get em in the team they were played often in defence. You know the "goals from anywhere" mantra. Thus when they go pro we see plenty of them play in central midfield or defence to get them in the team. Very few come from the Macca or Holloway school of proper defending. What happens then is you get players who get away with it for a while, because they are that skilful with a ball, but then they come up against the best they get into big trouble. Hence we can then identify that they are not as good as was originally made out. If these players can fool managers who look at this as their day job, they can fool many people. And in most cases as its rife taking attacking players and shoehorning them into an eleven I am not sure anyone notices anymore. At some point, though managers realise they need real defenders, you know, people who can defend first and all day long. People like Macca or Sol Campbell. But these players are rare as they were often never supported to develop to that level. If Eze has problems making it, you can image how hard it would be for a player whos not blessed with such talent, but really awesome at tackling, positioning and tracking. Such a player looks below the rest in the training skill drills, but solid in a back 4 or critical as your midfield destroyer. What type of player do you think a pro coach these days prioritises for their first eleven? Coaches just like the showboater in this country, gifted defender only types are rarely supported, let alone allowed to flourish. Look at our team. For midfield, we have Cameron who is past it and Ball who we got lucky with. And that's it. Or someone like Marcus Bean, who was never that good, yet got a long career out of his position as there was not much competition for it at the pro level. Holloway wasn't that skilful either, yet he got to play with Ray Wilkins. The hard grafters are not welcomed anymore in football, they all want tippy tappy players. How I wish for days of a hard spine of say Falco, Holloway and Macca. Try getting through that lot playing tappy stuff, they would hammer you hard. The crazy gang never liked playing against us because of that. When they could not beat us up, they had no plan B so they often lost to QPR.

Good post, although I would necessarily agree that coaches love showboaters nowadays. For me, there are very few really technically gifted players around (like Eze) and many more 'athletes'. Hard graft is placed over skill. That is why we loved Mackie and (for the most part) tolerant of Dykes and probably also why Eze was labelled as 'lazy' early on. Of course, putting in a shift is important, nobody likes to see shirkers, but somebody busting a gut won't get us up off our seats. Although, on reflection, it is not that new a concept after all. Was it Shankly that said that success was 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration?

At 'grass roots' levels all that coaches, as advised by the FA, should work on are ball skills, dribbling, tricks with the ball, control, working with the ball/on the ball, etc, etc.......so that hopefully players will be technically very good indeed. Hard work, running, passing is not part of the training. I would suggest that all professional academies work that way. [Post edited 6 Jan 2021 10:39]

| Lumley 'snag' on 10:43 - Jan 6 with 632 views | Esox_Lucius | With the current restrictions on heading the ball and coaching of it coming under heavy scrutiny, it may well become a thing of the past and we will have to rely on players who can control and keep possession of the ball. | |

The game is very different today, players need a high skill level be able to control a ball and be more precise with passing, top level pitches are like carpets just watch those Big Match Re-visited on ITV hub from the 70s, pitches were terrible. Even with very skillful players from that era the English game was still very much muck and brass. With imported and improved skill levels to match continental football, which was streaking ahead during this period, especially at international level, the way we play football started to evolve. You could argue that the introduction of our plastic pitch in the early 80s for all its faults meant Venables was an innovator who brought neat control based football to Rangers.
