It's a source of regret to me that his snarling, unsmiling, selfish demeanour has influenced a generation or two of kids, that his arrogant goal celebrations have caught on, that his constant bitching at team-mates (once considered, quite rightly, to be beyond the pale) now goes without a comment.
I hope the Player of the Tournament, whoever it may be, will have far better ethics than him.
"The opposite of love, after all, is not hate, but indifference."
Even during his so called best ever match against Greece he wasted 7 or 8 Free kicks before scoring that one. Its been forgotten, for obvious reasons, that Teddy Sheringham had 'a word' with him before THAT free kick...
True, Richard Langley had a better conversion rate than Beckham, but at least Becks got 3 or 4 a season. Ronaldo has two in 4 years.
Bare bones.

I don't totally get the hate on the pitch, as he's clearly quite a shy guy who uses a personality on the pitch to deliver his drive. Was some thing on the build up with a Utd coach saying he used to practise skills behind a hill at Carrington, because he could bear to have people see him fail.
A bigger source of concern for me are the allegations published in Germany (they can't be published in the UK cos they fall foul of libel laws and he hired a specialist lawyer)

Absolutely agree with you Brian. Outstanding footballer who has been hugely successful (and incredibly well rewarded) wherever he has has gone. One of the best players in the last 10 years without doubt.
At the same time, he also the epitome of many things wrong in the modern game. Sickeningly overpaid, morally suspect, arrogant and duplicitous. Think the coke incident where he was previously sponsored by them and happy to take enormous funds to promote an healthy sugary drink. Suddenly now he is no longer a fan now he isnt paid by them.
Never knowingly understood

I am not a fan of Ronaldo, but I can certainly appreciate that he is a special talent & has been one of the two best players on the planet for a decade or more.
He has surprised me this tournament though. When free kicks are not being given for every little touch, it seems to me that he accepted this far quicker than any of the other "big stars" & has been less petulant than I've seen before.
His time is nearing an end, but he will be greatly missed by Portugal & has been it's greatest player. Anyone that makes Eusebio look ordinary is indeed a tremendous player.

Even more delighted that Portugal as a team have gone out. They set out to kick De Bruyne and Hazard out of the game from the start and unfortunately by the end they’d succeeded.

Taking penalties in shoot outs are not as you are suggesting, taking the last penalty can be very pressurised indeed. Normally, an agreed order by all involved.
Where did I say they were easy..... where I have suggested that?
Every penalty is indeed a pressure moment but professional footballers have said that the best penalty takers should go first. I'll take their word on that. Sure, it's no guarantee but you are improving the odds if you do.
Ronaldo never even got to take the last penalty against Spain in the Euro 2012 semi-final as his previous team mates missed twice and they never get to pen #5. Of course, we'll never know the outcome had he gone sooner but he wanted the glory of getting Portugal to the final. All about him, and that's my point.

Your first paragraph is not my personal experiences that I have been involved with......and the last part of your second para is not how I see.

Why? Beckham was a far, far better player than Langley, Ronaldo was/is far, far better than either. But Langers - at admittedly a much lower level - used to ping them in from free kicks more regularly.
From the Athletic (from late last year):
Cristiano Ronaldo has scored just TWO free-kicks since the 2016/17 season and boasts a modest 6 per cent conversion rate, per a new study. Ronaldo's career average direct free-kick conversion rate is 6 per cent according to The Athletic who suggest this is the one area he's failed to improve as he gets older.
He is one of the top 10 players to ever put on boots, maybe even top 5. but a good free kick taker he is not.
Bare bones.

No doubting his talent, achievements etc but for me I just don’t like the fact he insists on taking the 5th penalty in shoot outs.
That’s putting himself first over his team every time so he can get all the glory. It’s been said many times you have your best penalty takers go first. Score the goals, take the pressure off the others.
No, not him.
I've always thought the fourth is more important than the fifth. Agree, best first to get one ojn the board, but by 4, someone has usually missed, so keep your second best for then. You don't always get to the 5th, so never save your best until then.
Bare bones.

This thread got nowt to do with Beckham or Langley.....see the heading!!
But listen, it pretty typical of posters writing what they do about a top top player......he was a top freekick taker - like it or not. He is an actor like most footballers are nowadays.
BUT posters want to slag him off when they do not even know the person, saying that he goes last penalty shoot out because he wants the glory and all that - its absolute rubbish basically.
You cant please many.....the same hypocritical posters say nothing but good things about Adel and some of he things he done was far worse.

'not a good free kick taker'.......well Antti, I suggest that you talk to the professionals and I would suggest that they would disagree with you 99% of the time!!!
Have you ever taken a free kick from the distances and angles that he has scored from?, do you realise just how difficult it is?? Do you understand how long he must of trained& practised to get those free-kicks into the net?? I don't know the answer but I would suggest that you have not to any of the questions!!!

There is not a 'right or wrong' answer.......it is about the players and manager and who feels most comfortable and confident.
Trust me, some players would not want to take the first or last but pressure is more on the last imo.

Ronaldo has grown on me over the years, a really incredible player, yeah he's not great at free kicks but has still scored some brilliant ones. his goal record and the way he influences games is incredible, one of the best of all time for me. 109 goals at international level on top of his club career is insane.
He sets high standards for his team mates, i quite like that about him and that he is clearly pissed off when he loses.
