| Cristiano Ronaldo 22:08 - Jun 27 with 8819 views | BrianMcCarthy | Delighted to see Ronaldo knocked out. It's a source of regret to me that his snarling, unsmiling, selfish demeanour has influenced a generation or two of kids, that his arrogant goal celebrations have caught on, that his constant bitching at team-mates (once considered, quite rightly, to be beyond the pale) now goes without a comment. I hope the Player of the Tournament, whoever it may be, will have far better ethics than him. | |

it doesnt matter Juzzie but.....i have not said, that you said, 'it was easy .to take a penalty'!!!

| Cristiano Ronaldo on 11:04 - Jun 28 by gazza1 | This thread got nowt to do with Beckham or Langley.....see the heading!! But listen, it pretty typical of posters writing what they do about a top top player......he was a top freekick taker - like it or not. He is an actor like most footballers are nowadays. BUT posters want to slag him off when they do not even know the person, saying that he goes last penalty shoot out because he wants the glory and all that - its absolute rubbish basically. You cant please many.....the same hypocritical posters say nothing but good things about Adel and some of he things he done was far worse. |
To be fair, Anti's post was in response to mine which was in response to a post entirely, as far as I can recall, about free kicks 👠

Sadly, a total knob, in public at any rate. But he loves his Mum. If he looked a bit more like Franck Ribery, there would not be half as much interest in him. And I doubt we would have got off page 1.

He loves a few Mums actually. Hasn’t he got loads of surrogate kids?

Indeed Bazza. He has loads of little parcels of perfection dotted around. To save time, the Sun has joined the dots for us - https://www.google.com/amp/s/w . With a family tree like that, he should be Prime Minister. I was referring to his Mum, who he loves (rather than the women he knocks up) . Again, courtesy of the Sun - https://www.google.com/amp/s/w . So it must be true.

Talking of ethics, you forget that the team that knocked Portugal out yesterday are coached by one Thierry Henry. Now, Ronaldo's showmanship may not be to your taste but he never cheated Ireland out of a place at the World Cup. #lehandofgod | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| Cristiano Ronaldo on 08:09 - Jun 28 by Northernr | The free kick thing is funny. Scored one of his last 52. Basically lives off one knuckle ball against Portsmouth more than a decade ago. Reminds me of when Barton used to insist on taking all of ours. |
Not sure about that stat but in any event that only applies to international football. The number of free kicks he's scored at club level is frightening.

Nonsense. Dribbling, left foot, right foot, headers, free kicks, penalties, improvised goals, assists, leadership, longevity, trophies aplenty at the highest level, and an unrivalled collection of records. Undoubtedly in the conversation for GOAT. [Post edited 28 Jun 2021 14:09]

"hate" would be far, far too strong a word, Benny. I just have no respect for his lack of sportsmanship, though the utmost respect for his talent. It's sports - it's nice to have a panto villain, and he fits the bill nicely! Wasn't aware that I'd even posted about him before! Thierry Henry can still annoy me at times when I see his mug on the telly, but I usually remember that his misdemeanour was a one-off and instinctive.

I don't think he lacks sportsmanship - he doesn't pursue referees and he's weirdly polite and considerate to his opponents. What he seems to lack is any respect or affection for his own team-mates, which is very odd.

Thierry blatantly used his hand to create a winning goal that ultimately denied Ireland a spot at World Cup 2010. Neither he nor his teammates asked the referee to rule the goal out or invited Ireland to score a free goal. All of Cristiano's pantomime antics combined can never compare to this flagrant cheating.

Yes, that's more accurate - it's still poor sportsmanship I'd say and a terrible, terrible example to youngsters. He also used to dive around and roll around a lot, but that seems to have reduced, if not disappeared. The arrogant strutting, preening, unsmiling goal celebrations also grate. It's just not cricket.

He is very demanding of his teammates, yes, but I don't think that should be confused with a lack of respect or affection. Former managers and teammates are very complimentary about Ronaldo. You only had to look at the respect between Ronaldo and Benzema after the Portugal-France match to see that.

No comparison at all, but Andy Thomson was a player who I noticed never celebrated when team-mates scored. Doing a job, not playing a game.

| Cristiano Ronaldo on 11:22 - Jun 28 by daveB | Ronaldo has grown on me over the years, a really incredible player, yeah he's not great at free kicks but has still scored some brilliant ones. his goal record and the way he influences games is incredible, one of the best of all time for me. 109 goals at international level on top of his club career is insane. He sets high standards for his team mates, i quite like that about him and that he is clearly pissed off when he loses. |
I've never liked his narcissism and arrogance but I warmed to him during the last Euros. I've rarely seen any player show more desire to win or put in more effort and he played on when injured for a while. Granted, his free kicks have been disappointing for a while but I don't think there are many players who have made vital contributions at key moments as reliably as CR7. In open play, I also find him remarkably unselfish. A lot of the time, he seems happy to play in colleagues. Perhaps I have become a fanboy

The number of misses from free-kicks is frightening, he just smashes it into the wall or row z. His record at Real Madrid was something like one in 55, a team player would have stepped aside for Bale or Modric but Ronaldo had to make it all about himself to the team's detriment. | Cristiano Ronaldo on 11:11 - Jun 28 by gazza1 | 'not a good free kick taker'.......well Antti, I suggest that you talk to the professionals and I would suggest that they would disagree with you 99% of the time!!! Have you ever taken a free kick from the distances and angles that he has scored from?, do you realise just how difficult it is?? Do you understand how long he must of trained& practised to get those free-kicks into the net?? I don't know the answer but I would suggest that you have not to any of the questions!!! |
Someone else brought Becks and Langers into it. I was responding to them (that's why I quoted the poster in my response) - nothing to do with you at all, and your 'pathetic' response was in itself pathetic. It's a shame you're so contrary all the time, as you do have some interesting views. Sadly, most of the time you misread, don't read, get things wrong, or misrepresent, as well as being totally unable to admit when you are (frequently) wrong. As for asking the experts about Ronaldo's free kick abilities - Ian Wright was saying on TV how poor his FKs are, and I cited an article in the Athletic that was all about his very poor conversion rate (2 in four years up to last November). He has scored some phenomenal free kicks. But he's not even close to the likes of Pirlo or Juninho Pernambucano - true great free kick takers. He's not even in the second tier of someone like Beckham or Henry. 2 free kicks in 4 years is paltry for someone who takes every single free kick within 35 yards of the goal and on most occasions blasts them over or straight at the wall. I assume you will never express an opinion on football again as you have never ' taken a free kick from the distances and angles that he has scored from?' or understand 'how difficult it is'. Pathetic response indeed.

Well potentially a chance of qualification, although I agree, penalties was the more likely outcome before Henry's intervention. If memory serves. France's 'equaliser' came just before the end of the first period of extra time, so there was still another 15 minutes to play. What frustrated me more than the illegal goal was why the hell didn't we play like that more often? We were bloody brilliant in Paris.

Ronaldo can only dream about some of the things Adel did during a game. Not even close with the ball at his feet as Adel.
