He could have booked some of the antics to try and put a stop to it

Problem is you can't book a player who says he is injured.

What's the ref supposed to do, a quick medical?

Can you imagine being the first ref who gets a concussed, or worse, player dragged off the pitch because he thinks hes play acting.

Good point above about breaking up the flow of the game, but everyone does it - just add the time on.

GKs - a different matter, that we've discussed before - in England's last 16 match Pickford took 23 seconds to release the ball near the end - 6 second rule is NEVER used now, even if they take 26 seconds.

Yes difficult to criticise refs when mostly it's the laws or the current interpretation of them that is to blame.

For example: why is a keeper allowed to delay picking up the ball until someone comes to close him down and then pick it up and run with it before clearing it. Make him kick it, or put it down to dribble, from where he picks it up.

I know it's difficult but some of them were quite clearly taking the piss near the end

I'd have liked to see the ref stop the game with Italy in possession to check for a pen when Immobile was on the floor. I'm know players should play to the whistle but I'm sure that would have obstructed and distracted the defenders.

Has anyone been booked for diving in this tournament?

Would refs generally be in favour of a stop start basketball style timekeeping system?
