Think we should get some of these other lads off especially those on a yellow. Kane and Sterling I would tug.

Check my post Ukraine below average and once they fall behind have nowhere close enough firepower to recover .
Denmark are a great story and I actually feel bad for Erickson missing their magic but England will destroy them too

Grealish, Foden and Saka not had a kick tonight.... 3 players that would walk into most teams in Europe.... and without them we made this look like a cakewalk.......
We really do have a great pool of talent

That reminded me of QPR 2010/11 under Warnock the sheer pride and professionalism in keeping a clean sheet Sancho Mount and Sterling tracking back when you get the skill players working like that you have a chance in every match.

IMO this is the best England team since 1970. For those of you that are young (born after 1952!) we had a lot better team than in 1966.

We don't have a player of quite the same quality as Gasgoigne or Rooney, but overall this squad has more ability, belief & work rate than anything since.

Even more impressive when you think of the state of England when Southgate took over.

I know England had under-performed before Ramsey but we were still one of the top teams in the world, that was why things like losing to the USA and being thumped by the Hungarians were such a big deal. By the time Southgate took over, getting out of the group stages at a tournament was an achievement.

I’d say that the starting 11 in 1996 was stronger in relative terms than our current first team, but this squad has far greater depth.

For me there are 2 huge differences from previous years. First is the togetherness of the squad, breaking down inter-club rivalries and building on the experience of this group of players coming up from the U21s under Southgate, then going to the semi-finals together last time. Second is the tactical clarity we’ve brought to each game and the tournament as a whole. Yes it was boring for the first few games but we’ve established real defensive solidity, then slowly built more attacking freedom on top of that.

Pacing ourselves through a tournament, comfortably switching systems for different opponents, not panicking when we get into the knockout stages or come up against stronger opposition… this is not stuff that England teams normally do, and it’s wonderful to see us finally getting it right.

Very very difficult to compare teams nearly 60 yrs apart to be honest. The game is so much quicker, the players are a totally different breed to be honest
Though churlish after saying this after yet another clean sheet, but the o ly players I would take fromm 66 is Banks and Moore to be honest
Think Pickford is far too emotional, Banks was just world class, and Moore simply because IMO he was the greatest captain and defender I have ever seen
The rest for the team for me would be the 2021 team.

Stronger opposition? Let's see how they do against Italy.

And lads, it's only the Euros. Even Greece have won it.....

Euros is actually higher standard than the world cup.
More quality games as has been proved in this tournament. Very good England squad and an exceptional manager who's intelligent and erudite.
You could have got stuck big Sam.
Dodged a bullet there lads!!

I think the shock of losing against the Yanks (possibly rightly) prevented the journalists and fans in 1950 from seeing that it was really 'just one of those days' and the stats certainly give credence to that.

With Hungary, however, I think that was a rude awakening which was long overdue. In the Battle of Highbury if Italy had played in the 1st half as they did in the 2nd (ie, not kicking us off the pitch) I think it's safe to say we would have lost. There were also plenty of signs in matches after that and throughout the mid to late 40s where it should have been obvious that the Europeans had caught up with us and by playing different styles but we didn't pick up on it and brains like Jimmy Hogan were not utilised either leaving us with no-one thinking differently: even then we fell into the trap of trying to emulate the teams which had embarrassed us but by the time we had football had moved and we were still behind.

With regards to Southgate, I think we can safely say he's the 2nd best manager we've had and its looking very likely that he'll become the best. To me his greatest achievement has been showing us that we can play thoughtful football and replicate the best sides now, not 5 years later.

Totally agree.

It's not as hard to win as it was from 1960 to 1992, or even from 1996 to 2012, but you don't get teams as weak as Togo, Trinidad or North Korea in the Euros...
