With the coach bother carefully tidied away, we can return to our traditional summer torment.

Bairstow behind the stumps, better without gloves?

Yeah, it’s unusually bad for BBC sport.

I can only think they contractually have a set amount of ‘play’ minutes (say 45, perhaps it was assumed that the highlights contract would be won by a commercial provider?)

BBC have taken the decision to programme for an hour, hence the other stuff.

But whatever, it does not work. They are also perhaps targeting the ‘100’ demographic rather than traditionalists like me.

Oh for the days of Richie Benaud (one of the best sports broadcasters ever.) Opening comment to camera, highlights of the days play then closing comments to camera - JOB DONE.

In the Top 3 sports broadcasters of all time for me with Madden and McEnroe you can tell all 3 truly love the sport they are commentating on and keep it simple and only commentate when necessary.

TMS has definitely dumbed down and in danger of becoming a light entertainment show. 5 Live sports has gone the same way....used to love 606 with Alan Green et al. But now it clickbait sensastionalist tw@ttery served up by Savage and Sutton more suited for TalkShi!te
!te.

Gone a bit T20 in the last hour. England 55/4 off 11 overs, after being 21/4. Guess who at the crease (for the moment).

Jinxed that successfully. Clever way of dodging batting 4th innings, I suppose.

Some very decent bowling by Boult to be fair.

But also some dumb batting especially Stokes - it's only day 2, try and bat time!

Stokes dismissal was ridiculous - as you say day 2 is not the time to be slogging away with few wickets in hand. He's captain ffs.

My theory is that we are trying to create sufficient drama so that we can win the game with the highest 4 innings chase in history. We haven't broken any records for at least a week after all.

Never knowingly understood

Been watching a lot of him at the Oval this year and I commented on how much he has improved as a batsman.

Zaltzman fact…England have scored a combined 509 off 87 overs.

Crazy thing to say given England lost 6 wickets in the first 12 overs, but this strike rate takes the second new ball out of the game.

Absolutely fantastic stuff. Test cricket is still the pinnacle of the sport. Although I feel that T20 is a good introduction to the sport. Took my lad to Lords for his first taste of cricket on Sunday for a T20 match between Middlesex and Kent. He loved it. One day with a fair wind we will sit together at Lords pints in hand enjoying watching England slay the Aussies!

I read Jonny Bairstows autobiography 'A clear blue sky' during lockdown,it deals a lot with his Dads tragic death and how he and his family coped with it as well as his cricket career. One of the best books ive read by a sportsman.

Am I right in thinking there were only around 75 overs total today?

What's ruining cricket is the demise of the County games. How can you call someone like Root a Yorkshire player when he only plays once or twice a year for them. The average fan would be hard pushed to name six players from the team they support. My sons wouldn't be interested spending a day watching a team of nobodies, let alone the expense now days.

Another ridiculous day of Test drama...frailty and brilliance in equal measure. There is no other sport that can do this and it's only day 2 of 5.

To be fair the England players have played a fair amount of county cricket up until the start of the test series and were released for T20 games in between the second and third test. It’s more to do with the scheduling nowadays with back to back tests and this summer shoehorning the cancelled India test match in from last summer

The fact that the closing credits on Friday on sky was Motorhead Ace of Spades says it all. High octane bjnkers stuff and soooo much fun to watch.

Glad Ollie Pope is cemementing his place I the team. As a Surrey fan I have followed him for a while (and I can name 6 players not in the England team who play for Surrey: Jacks, Jamie Smith, Geddes, Ryan Patel, McKerr and Atkinson

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

England would be even more on top if the former captain could catch.
