Well last year it was only about £6 as they only had 4 bulbs working.
Might be a bit more this year.

Never worked out apart from initial outlay why clubs don’t fill the roofs of stands with solar panels and the batteries to go with them , free energy no issues with planning due to heights of the stands and maybe make some cash back for the club with what’s left .

We get to see a stadium that uses it in our next match. Not sure how cost effective it is, or in fact how environment friendly too, which is probably why you don't see this sort of thing more.

I think the players kit should be in high vis or glow in the dark. Same for the ball and it could also be the same as the one the blind footballers use. Not sure we’d notice any difference in standard of officiating either.

25,000 kWh per match, according to this 2018 article. At 20p per kWh that would be £5,000 per match. At 40p per kWh it would be £10,000 per match.

14 October 1878: the first football match played under floodlights
The world's first football match under floodlights took place on this day in 1878 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, as the “Blues” played the “Reds” in an exhibition match.

Floodlights are an essential part of modern football. And not just for the evening matches, which hold their own special appeal, but for the boring old Saturday afternoon matches too. After all, in the depths of December, the sun sets before the start of the second half, even in London. In Newcastle, you won't even make it to the end of the first half before darkness descends.

Floodlit football has been around for a long time — even longer than the Football League, which didn't get going until 1888. Because the first floodlit football match in the world took place on this day in 1878 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, now home to Sheffield United, when the "Blues" played the "Reds" in an exhibition match under electric light.

As the Sheffield and Rotherham Independent reported, although "we have had plenty of athletic exhibitions by the light of gas", electricity was still in its infancy at the time. Indeed, Edison hadn't yet patented his electric light bulb. It was a huge novelty.

And so that's why 12,000 people paid sixpence each to watch the game, and as many more again snuck in under the cover of darkness without paying. "The roads to Bramall Lane were completely besieged", said The Independent. "There seemed no end to the ever-coming stream."

Four lights were installed on wooden "stages" 30 feet high. Behind each goal was a "portable engine" powering the lights, which put out a total of 8,000 candlepower. It was a big success. "Everybody seemed highly pleased with the result of the experiment, the light being most brilliant and effective", said The Independent.

Of the football on offer, however, The Times reported the next day that "the brilliancy of the light dazzled the players and sometimes caused strange blunders" a phenomenon which was — until recently at least — all too common at Bramall Lane.

[EDIT] Here's the link for that piece. There's a grainy picture of the match programme.

There's no way non league clubs could afford £5,000 per match.

I officiate on Isthmian Under 18s and Under 23s and all their home games are at the first team stadiums under lights.

Add in just the first team (and some these clubs have reserves as well) and there's no way they are paying £5,000 per match that need floodlights!

Somebody told me long ago you'd be surprised how cheap it is. Next to nothing basically. Pence. I said this to Lee Hoos once off mic and I thought he was going to have an asthma attack. So it's somewhere inbetween there.

I read that someone at Lords Cricket Ground said their floodlights cost £1k per hour to run.

Now bear in mind that Lords is absolutlely massive, and they require a pretty good level of lighting for batters to have a fair chance of seeing the ball. I would not be surprised if the cost for footbsll floodkights to be half that(?).

So take (a generous) 2 hours at £500 ph = £1,000 = 40 spectators at £25 each who cannot attend an early kickoff. and suddenly it's costing you money, not saving it.

P.S. These ramblings might be complete bollox, but hey, they're the best I've got, so go easy on me.

EDIT: Just seen Glory Hunter's post (above). Please refer to my P.S.

The link I posted was about the lighting requirements for World Cup stadiums. Other stadiums would doubtless be less well lit. And I have no idea how much football clubs pay for their electricity. My domestic rate in London is about 20p, but I think businesses pay more. And all rates will be going up in October, with no cap for businesses.

yes had a quick search and this was the first artcile I see

https://tachyonlight.com/how-m

Couple of years old, in Dollars and based on EU prices!! But says $6 per hour so to be hinest I think we can safely rule out any club in the PL or EFL needing to do this.

Its will be no more than £15 per game.

Would it need to be 1 pm kick offs? I believe when the three day week was in effect throughout January & February 1974 and power was rationed, the Saturday games kicked off between 2-2.15 pm

I'd say it is very environmentally friendly. It's ideal to generate energy in the place where it is consumed, to avoid losses in transmission from the power station, which can be as much as 8-15%.

The payback period for the investment could be quite lengthy, though.

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Brentford also installed solar roof panels:
"Up to 30% of the electricity generated will be used on site and will save 36.7 tonnes of carbon emissions each year."

Yes. Also floodlighting and lighting in general are probably not the biggest user of energy at Loftus Road on a match day.

More likely the appliances in the kitchen used to make evil Les’s lunches and the heating/aircon system in his boardroom are the worst.

It doesn’t matter what time of day you play for them.

I’ve said for years that we should adopt the same time zone as europe. This would no doubt be an energy saver as during the height of the summer when it gets light at 4am most people are still asleep so this is wasted daylight. Then if it doesn’t start getting dark until 10.30 then the even lighter evenings, and warmer will encourage more people to spend the evenings outdoors thus saving energy and also one hour less lights on before going to bed. Evidently it was trialed in the early 70’s but scrapped because of Scottish farmers.

Vote for independence and we’ve cracked it….!

Last time I was in Berlin I went to see Union Berlin ko at 1200. This was ten years ago, when electricity was costing them 20 euro cents a unit (a lot pricier than ours at that time) so I guess the Germans have been doing it for a while.

Isn’t that a traditional KO time in Europe though? The same way the Spanish play Saturday and Sunday evenings?

Why the need to KO at 1pm? When I played amateur football during the winter we kicked off at 2pm instead of 3pm or 1.30pm if it was a cup game in case of extra time.
Even kicking off at 1pm if its a really grey wet day they will need to put the lights on anyway!

That's Just reminded me of something I looked up the other day.

Someone mentioned Port Vale and I though 'where the bloody hell IS Port Vale?' So I looked it up and turns out it's the only team in the football league not named after a place.

"their name being a reference to the valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey Canal. They have never played top-flight football, and hold the record for the most seasons in the English Football League (111)"

I also wondered what the stadium looked like it holds 15.000.
