I'm completely in awe of this. No event in the history of my life has been marked to that extent. Nowhere near. I have sheer admiration for the people who are making the pilgrimage and I am completely humbled just looking at the queue on my television, yet alone joining it. A shame that more time could not be given to make it more easily accessible but obviously there are logistics and rituals to be observed. I hope every football supporter in the land gives the minute's silence and national anthem the full respect they deserve tomorrow.

Charles didn't know what clingfilm was, apparently.
The English cricket team having just been whitewashed by Australia went to Charles for advice. “I don't think I can help, chaps” He said. “You see, I don't bat although Camilla Parker Bowls”

"On arriving at Victoria Island on a tour of Canada, Prince Charles was furious to discover that his favourite shoehorn had been left at the previous stop in Winnipeg by his valet. A Canadian air force jet was the answer. It covered the thousand or so miles gaily burning kerosene, no passengers on board, and was met at the airport by a police convoy, all to reunite Charles with the misplaced item."

Did it cost the British tax payer anything

What I have been most impressed with is how 'the firm' have kicked into gear in visiting the home nations, bestowing Prince of Wales title on William, numerous church services, younger royals standing by the coffin etc
Certainly know how to keep their hand on the tiller

Interesting that someone mentioned the newly formed Republic of Barbados in this thread. It’s an island and a people close to my heart and already since the Declaration of Independence the Chinese are moving in. Properties have been erected that are far superior to your average Bajan home to house 300 Chinese workers who will oversee an infrastructure project in and around the most beautiful part of the island. The cost of this construction is $135million being paid to a Chinese company with a loan being provided to the Bajan government of $135million from the Chinese government. Sadly Barbados will be going the same way as many African nations and Sri Lanka when they realise they will not keep up the repayments. Just look at the unrest recently in Sri Lanka as a result of the nation’s indebtedness.
"Now any pretence that the Prince should use a means of transport that minimises his carbon footprint has drifted away like so much hot air. Private jets are now the default option, with Charles’s predilection reinforced by Camilla. Charles himself vowed not to use British Airways again, declaring their first-class seats deeply uncomfortable. The Sunday Times reported that his BA flight in April 2000 was only the second time ever he had flown abroad using a commercial air service."

We get you don't like Charles, and you're not alone in that. But the real conversation here is about whether to keep the monarchy, or become a republic. I don't think it's that contrary of me to find the monarchy fairly ridiculous in many ways but still, unless i can be convinced otherwise and I am open to suggestion, to think it's the least worst option at the moment, albeit hopefully it will be slimmed down and become more financially accountable.
I don't really feel that continued barbs at charles are moving the debate on at all.

The president abruptly left the White House on Tuesday evening for a previously unannounced trip. The White House later revealed he was going to Wilmington to vote in the state’s primary elections, with state auditor being the main statewide race on the ballot. He returned to the White House a few hours later.
Some journalists questioned why Biden did not request an absentee ballot or vote early in-person when he was already in Delaware over the weekend. Tuesday’s trip drew criticism from conservatives in particular, who pointed out that the Air Force One trip, combined with the presidential motorcade and police escort, cost taxpayers thousands of dollars.
Biden did not respond to a question on Tuesday night about why he didn’t request an absentee ballot.
I read an interesting fact that in 2015, the Foreign Office issued advice not to travel to at least parts of every Arab Republic and none of the Arab monarchies.

your last paragraph is a bit confusing? Are you saying it is safe to travel to Arab monarchies, or that none are safe to travel to? Apologies if I'm being thick, it's one of the obstacles in my life!

All the monarchies were considered safe to travel to - I’m guessing the various Gulf States, Oman, Saudi, Jordan and Morocco, none of the republics - Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen. Might have missed some.

Fair play to anyone who stands in a queue that long to see anything. I suspect republicans are very well aware we are in the minority, but we are entitled to our view. It’s possible to be both respectful about a death and also believe the monarchy to be a dangerous, outdated, profoundly damaging institution that only reinforces the terrible class system this country continues to promote and endure. 25 years ago the feeling was very much leaning the other way, the Queen was sorely out of step, as was the entire RF, when Diana died, but reputations can be rebuilt. Hopefully healthy debate will continue over this - preferably after the funeral - but as you say, can’t see it changing any time soon (although earlier this year i think only 33% of young people approved of the monarchy - there will be a bounce now, but Charles hasn’t got the affection people had for Elizabeth).
If it was scrapped tomorrow you'd still have rich privilaged people running the country, people may feel better about them as they vote them in but it's not going to be hugley different.

A better solution would be for reduction of media control by a handful of billionaires, or perhaps better education so more people could see through the propaganda and vote for things in their own best interests rather than those of old Etonians etc.

By and large people don’t care who rules them, hence in the UK with recent GE’s to go by only around 65% have voted. We are not ruled by the monarchy anymore. Not for centuries. The monarchy is nothing more than a symbolism which many are happy to hold onto especially given that compared to the state of UK politics at this moment is far more reliable. We all know that some of our taxes go towards the maintenance of the royal family but then again plenty of it goes towards the salaries and expenses of MP’s and the running of government and I would certainly suggest that if you ask your average UK cities where they feel they are getting better value for money I suspect that most would say the royal family. I also would suggest that having the royal family and the King as head of state, it saves against the potential of having extremists running the country.

But they would also be able to vote them out. That's surely the crucial part.
It seems pessimistic to me, almost defeatist, when a people don't believe their citizens could run a democracy to their own betterment, so let's leave it to an unelected family who believe in their own Divinity.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
But why do we spend our money on things we don't need? Why do we spend our money on things that actively damage us/our environment? Why do we go to war over a flag? Why do we vote for politicians who are clearly in it for their own motives?
Because we are susceptible to marketing, to propaganda, because of ancient instincts that we'll never fully understand.
I know the path I'd choose, but we have to progress with slow steps - I doubt we'll ever get there, unless we all learn to wash our potatoes around the world at the same time. In the meantime, I'll support the system which is probably going to cause the least harm.
Really eloquent, interesting man

Thanks my man. Will watch that later.
Your posts have definitely made me think over the last few days. Usually when you say something I just think "will he ever buy me a beer?" but this thinking is different.

Ah, sorry, no I won't.
Anyway, I'm off to work, as the passing of the Queen isn't quite as sad as my bank balance right now!
