| Travelman released on 18:21 - Jun 29 by BazzaInTheLoft | The Obituary: A limited footballer nowhere near as bad as made out. A human stick to beat Les Ferdinand. |
Whatever. Travelman is a poor footballer who has failed to make an impression in English, Scottish, US, Brazilian, and Belgian football. He has been paid handsomely to make a mere 80 appearances in 8 years, taking in 3 continents en route. The boy's a bludger, plain and simple. As for Les, criticism of his decision to award Nico a 4-year contract renewal was merited. Ironic then really that no sooner Les leaves, this contract is terminated. [Post edited 30 Jun 2023 15:38]

| Travelman released on 10:47 - Jun 30 by Padulas_Shampoo | The awful 4 year extension was dished out literally whilst we were amidst Bright running down his contract and on the verge of leaving for nothing, for which the DoF received a lot of venom. It was also during Eze's meteoric rise. You can see why they panicked with young development players' contracts. It was a huge error in judgment though and he was 23 when he signed it. Most people could have predicted exactly how those next 3 years did eventually pan out. |
At that point though Wallace was injured (again) so he was first choice left back in the team and about to go to the Euros with Finland so can see why they gave him a long deal. That same week they gave the same length deals to Kakay and Dieng who hadn't played much either and less complaints on those as they both did pretty well. We're giving his replacement a 3 year deal which could be shrewd or stupid depending on how it goes

The difference is that Niko had already been at the club 5 years and contributed nothing in that time. Given this, it's difficult to understand why he was offered a 4-year extension. 1 or 2 years, perhaps, but 4, no way. Anyway, he's gone, and not before time. [Post edited 30 Jun 2023 15:35]

OK, perhaps. Well, no. In any event, selecting one ok spell in Scotland when he (mis)represented 7 clubs over 8 years across 3 continents is rather clutching at straws. The overriding point remains. A poor footballer who, thanks to Les, overstayed his welcome and won't be missed.

| Travelman released on 14:36 - Jun 30 by colinallcars | Last day of the month. At what hour of the day can we relax in the knowledge Balogun hasn't been offered a new contract ? It's making my irritable bowel play up something chronic. |
That would be on the 31st August! Or preferably, when he signs for a different club.

I get that and I'm not saying it's a deal that worked but at the time he was on the verge of the first team, manager liked him do you give him 2 years and if he does well need to do a new contract again in 6 months, 3 years would have probably been about right but went for the extra one same as they with Dieng and Kakay. It went wrong but never has a back up left back's contract faced as much scrutiny as this fella has

It's not clutching at straws, it's looking at the situation at the time the decision to give him a 4 year contract was made. For example it was also at the time that Manning and BOS were running down their contracts, so perhaps it was seen as a worthwhile risk to sign 3 unproven players for 4 years on cheap deals to avoid the same situation. He didn't work out, it happens. He was probably not on a lot of money and we loaned him out so much we weren't paying him most of the time anyway. I don't get the fascination with beating the club up over it tbh.
