Working class or middle class roots 13:50 - Jul 11 with 5824 viewssoops

Countless sociologists have spent thousands of hours on research to identify the essence of class roots. I could have made it simple for them with one irrefutable test.
It’s a slightly warm day and you don’t want to wear your jumper. Do you (a) tie it round your waste or (b) drape it over your shoulders?

Neither.

One gets one's manservant to hold it.

Whether you call it a jumper or a pullover gives it away .

Easy way to tell class if you have to use your body to earn a living then you are Working Class if you use your brain to earn a living then you are Middle Class and if you get others to earn money for you then you are Upper Class

I'm just popping to the fishmonger to buy some fish heads to feed the servants.
When I get back, I'll ask 'em.

If you're middle class you'd (hopefully) be able to spell waist correctly.

When I was a lad we dreamed of having a jumper. Had to wear a cardboard box with holes cut out of the bottom and sides...

Pullover = landed gentry / upper class.

Sweater = middle class / Americans

Jumper = I know my place.

You're out and about and feeling a little peckish.

Do you A, pop into Greggs for a sausage roll or stake bake, or do you B, pop into M&S or Waitrose to grab something you can't pronounce?

I would like to point out that M&S have lovely pork pies with jelly and all that.

The general rule ususally is that if you have to justify how working class you are, you're probably middle class.

What about tying it diagonally over one shoulder? That seems to be the way nowadays...among both the clicking limebike youths and the braying inheritors. A class unifier.

But how many who are middle class are only one or two generations from working class?

I just hand my jumper to my wife to carry.

Met a lass at uni who was always banging on about how working class she was, especially compared to me. Turned out she lived in a converted farm house, her parents were a head teacher and a consultant. When revealed, her rationale was essentially just she was Northern and I was from London.

In the modern economy, the terms have become irrelevant

Unless Soops does literally tie his waste (Shit to the oiks) in a jumper. I suppose you could use it to sling faeces at your neighbours. I'm warming to the idea, to be honest.

A box? I would lie at night in my paper bag dreaming of a box.

I am still Steve but no longer in Dagenham.
