| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 22:01 - Aug 12 by Dorse | Lose: Ainsworth's fault Win: Dobbo's influence Credit where it's due. He got it wrong last week, he fronted up, changed things (not so much personnel) and got an improvement. This week he got it bang on. Won't always but this one? Yup. |
Wasn’t there a suggestion here of players’ revolt against Ainsworth style of play? True, the manager takes responsibility for a loss and credit for a win, but we all know Ainsworth, win it is the players and lose it is on him as the players gave their all it was down to his game plan and team set up. What if the win against Cardiff is really someone else’s credit as he said so himself he was setting the team up as how he wanted to play instead of to the team’s strength. It is a 360 degrees transformation and I hope we persevere and not be like last season win at Watford to the fiasco at Blackpool within a week (at least this time it is the other way around)

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 21:15 - Aug 12 by BrianMcCarthy | Very big of him. But we've been here before. When he joined he was telling us, as was Dobson, that we would see exciting football, then we went to "possession can do one" and rope-a-dope, opening day of the season is where teams usually show intent and what they've worked on in the off-season but within a week we've changed again. I'd love us to play more in the way we did today, but I think we'll have to wait a while to know if this is really the new normal. Genuinely happy for him tonight, though. |
The most positive spin as I see it, he came in and after a couple of games realized just how bad things were and went backs to the wall for rest of the season (for better or worse) to get over the line. This year, he defaulted to that, which was a mistake. He recognized that after the first game and switched it up.
| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 06:58 - Aug 13 with 2089 views | Ned_Kennedys | There’s some very grudgingly given praise for Ainsworth on this thread. It was a great result and achieved by a clever formation change and team selection. Cook will make a huge difference to the defence and is an important signing. Smyth and Armstrong were left on as long as possible but we had no like for like subs available so there was always going to be a problem once they went off: better that than forcing both to play the 100+ minutes and get injured. Very positive signs yesterday and looking forward to this week’s home matches. | | | |

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 00:55 - Aug 13 by numptydumpty | All players knew what they had to do this week Last week there was no plan at all Three at the back an still chasing another seasoned pro centre / right back suggests he has chosen his set up for the season I personally was extremely surprised that Willock was not even on the bench. Willock am sure will play full game midweek but we hung on and just about deserved to Smyth played well and Dykes was the workhorse he is. Cook and Fox both seemed organised and vocal Begovic has the opportunity to be the Stejskal figure All well and good today. Although the last twenty minutes I aged a decade. After match interviews are part of the managers role now but there are very few who know how to use them or even many more who simply have zero impact in how to remain positive and valid within them. |
If Willock is downing tools which, given the drop off from where he was to where he is now, is eminently possible, I think he’s absolutely right to drop him completely. Sends a bigger message than wasting a sub spot and putting him on in the 96th minute. What’s he/we got to lose? We seem to have a player who now contributes nothing, is using valuable wages, and we’re going to lose for nothing anyway.

It certainly was a great result. All credit to GA whoever's idea it was. Maybe Willock was injured. I'm sure fit he would have made a better sub than Dixon Bonner, or Albert come to that.

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 00:55 - Aug 13 by CLAREMAN1995 | Game of inches as usual it should have been 2-2 so while the win is brilliant we have lots of issues still. Leading by 2 goals we should have buired them but actually got worse IMO. We cannot afford to retreat and playing hospital balls to Dykes up there by himself just lit the fire under Cardiff . Not one QPR fan expected us to hold out with those tacticts espiceally with 10 minutes of extra time. We did and its brilliant but we need some other plan going forward . GA said his subs made a big difference and yes they did but in favor of Cardiff .Albert and Richards just threw gasoline on the fire IMO. |
Losing Armstrong and Smyth changed the game , it took our pace away, if those 2 could have lasted until full-time I reckon we would have scored another goal or two. Pace kills teams.

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 08:31 - Aug 13 with 1838 views | dmm | Perhaps the early season lesson for us all is to manage our reactions to a bad loss or a good win. I was totally deflated last week and felt very elated yesterday but of course we're only 2 games into a 46 game season. I'm still pretty concerned with what lies ahead for us this season but there is now hope we can beat the bookies predictions. The chances are we will get beaten several times over the next few weeks. If so, maybe we should all check our anger a bit, and I include myself in that. | | | |

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 08:36 - Aug 13 with 1819 views | Esox_Lucius | There doesn't seem to be any credit given here to the players, from the gossip emanating from the dressing room, who have forced this change upon him. GA is working with a squad mostly assembled to play technical passing football. We have seen on many occasions examples of this and it even got us into the play off spots. The same players who are being called "League 1 at best" etc. if it is a players cabal leading the revolution then fair play to them for getting the change as I don't think GA would have moved, tactically, without the unrest from within. | |

That is all unsubstantiated gossip and is best left on Twitter and the like. How many players have we got that play ‘technical passing football’? Chair and Willock. That’s it. If you believe these two led a player’s revolt and the management team had nothing to do with yesterday then dream on.
| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 09:11 - Aug 13 with 1717 views | stevec | On the match thread as we went past the hour mark, people were commenting on the fact they hope he gets his substitutes right. Had a quick scan of the names on the bench and it scared the life out of me. How on earth is any manager expected to get anything better off such a scant bunch of replacements? Virtually every single replacement was likely to be a significant dip off from their counterpart. We’ve seen the ramifications over the previous two seasons, even if you keep a first eleven fit they are going to be at the point of exhaustion come the second half of the season, more so with the introduction of properly added time, which at the moment will be the equivalent of an extra 7 games played. There’s also the issue of a team that is still looking exhausted beyond an hour or so of the game. Is this more down to trying to compete at a level of football that is a bridge too far for some of them rather than a lack of fitness? The club shouldn’t get itself in this position as there should be players on that bench more capable and for no more cost. Is a Dom Ball instead of a Tyler Richards going to adversely affect our finances, unlikely. Would you rather have a Dom Ball defending a 2-0 lead rather than the Tyler fella, probably yes. I don’t get why this gulf in ability has been allowed to happen and still not corrected. GA has got a hell of a job on his hands much like all his fallen predecessors. | | | |
| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 09:18 - Aug 13 with 1697 views | dmm | You make a good point regarding fitness and the additional playing time this season with more extra time. Ainsworth has said something about the players' fitness won't be at it's peak until several games into the season in order to minimise potential injury. I guess that's Ben William's work. And, btw, it's Taylor not Tyler. That joker now plays for Brum. | | | |

Out of that team yesterday only three players can be argued to have been brought in to play "technical football." prior to Ainsworth. Chair, Paal, Dozzell. I'm not entirely sure how they form a powerful cabal capable of forcing a change on anyone. It wasn't like we played technical passing football yesterday.. It was still predominantly an Ainsworth style. Play with the ball in the opposition half, not ours Press harry and chase. Run your heart out. The only difference really was the formation and moving away from man to man at Watford. He has played three at the back at Wycombe. Until yesterday he has not had enough fit centre backs to play three at the back. Everyone is so desperate not to give him any credit they look for any possible other explanation other than he's not as dumb as all that. [Post edited 13 Aug 2023 9:35]

It’s far from gossip if you listen to Ainsworth himself. Ainsworth said he had meetings with both individuals and units this week. He said he realised he was not giving them the best platform to succeed. The players were clearly instrumental in leading the change in style, but GA deserves credit for taking it on board and implementing the feedback. “I really did think ‘How do I get the best out of the players I have got rather than what has got me success (at Wycombe) in the past?’. “I had to say to myself ‘This is new Gareth’ and I thought I was stifling what the boys are good at, so we changed things up. “I’ve got to drop what I was believing in, and start going to this. Because I thought to myself, how do I get the best out of my players? You’re going to have to change Gareth, you’re going to have to come a certain way”

If we only have two technical players then the change of plan wouldn’t have worked and the long ball football would, surely? Credit to GA for making the change and whoever brought it about.

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 23:33 - Aug 12 by 1JD | He’d all but lost the dressing room and was virtually left with no choice but to listen to the players feedback. He was also aware the fans were up in arms. And the board probably had a word of caution. So let’s be realistic, he changed it because in all likelihood, he was forced into it and his job was on the line. Make the change and get to keep his job. Or do nothing and probably die on his sword. In that regard, it’s an easy decision to make, so whilst he gets a level of credit; let’s not go overboard. And let’s remember why he was in the situation to begin with. There are far more questions than answers at this point. |

| Ainsworth on Today (Cardiff) on 10:29 - Aug 13 with 1434 views | dmm | I don't think anyone is refusing to give Ainsworth credit. Some are simply pointing out there's more to yesterday's changes than the one man changing his mind about formation and tactics. And I'm sure I did see more 'technical' football yesterday, albeit the stats weren't great - 35% possession, 323 passes with a 67% success rate. The football compared to Watford was better in pretty well all respects, not least in that we scored two goals and won the game. | | | |
