That you have to hire a securely enclosed field for dogs with behavioural issues, makes the point as to why they've been banned.
The reason they have stopped allowing XLs, and your holiday destination may not allow it, is I imagine, an insurance issue. |
So does that mean Jack Russells and Poodles should be banned. Enclosed fields are used for all breeds of dogs. One near me has all kinds of dogs use it. Also it might be cos dog has anxiety issues. As already stated it can also be used by an owner who wants their dog to run around free without being hassled by idiots who can't control their dogs. [Post edited 31 Dec 2023 11:32]

I am for the XL Bully ban as I don't trust the breeders not the breed, but I think it's totally wrong that an enclosed field to let dogs roam safely for whatever reason will now not let the dog that needs it most (as it's going to be always muzzled outside and on the leash a lot) use this facility. That is indeed a disgrace and means to own an XL Bully you have to own a field now. I would start a crowd funding campaign to buy a field for dog owners to actually use for their dogs, no matter the breed.
As for Insurance, they can all refuse to do it, as they may see that your asset (dog) has depreciated to zero. That's the way the insurance people see it, as an asset, and if there is no market for the asset, in that you cannot sell it, then they will never insure it as they cannot value it or the value is zero. I am not saying this is right, I think its wrong, but that's often their reasoning. It's all about capital again as it always is with large corporations. |  |

I should imagine that the field owners also need some kind of insurance and it may be that the insurance companies have refused it or made it too expensive.

It's the ones that eat the shit that are the problem.
I'm not in favour of dog bans, I recall a time (late 70's I think), when the call went up against Pit Bulls, seemed nonsensical to me knowing how difficult it would be to enforce. Muzzles, yes ok, if the dog has ever shown signs of aggressive behaviour.
There's been very few hours in my life that I haven't owned a dog(s) and there have been a couple of embarrassing moments when one has growled / barked / worried another person. I'm mortified actually, but like most owners, work hard to encourage calm behaviour and thankfully, though bitten by other dogs, have never experienced one of mine take a chunk or even nip anybody. So just an update on our situation (for those that do care)
Just had an email today from the company that hires out the fields to inform us that they've had further discussions with their insurance company and they've agreed that one of the 5 fields they hire is acceptable to use for a XL Bully as long as there's third party insurance and exemption certificate in place. The dogs are also free to walk without a muzzle.
The Landowner has also agreed that he will give consent with the insurance company policy in place.
This is a huge relief for us and I'd like to think my original email response to the ban of the field use prompted some positive action, but who knows?
Finally some common sense within this situation.
Also, I've managed to get third party insurance through The Dog Trust as long as our exemption certificate is agreed (which we're waiting for). £25 per year for £1 mill cover.
So all positive for now.
To know our dog Murphy can still enjoy a decent quality of life under these new strict regulations means so much to us. Plus, that one field we're able to use is our favourite one too , which is a touch.! | |

He’s over there on the right. Hungarian Vizsla mate. We’ve got loads over here. They really are lovely nuts - everyone has the best dog, I get that. They are hunters, prey driven and if they get a scent - forget recall. It’s why I only let him off the lead in the right places, which he needs.

Great news and hopefully Murphy gets to enjoy his walks and no drastic action is needed. I saw a FB post re the £25 insurance which must be a great relief to thousands of good owners.

After the dogsh*t QPR served us up over Christmas I watched a few vidoes of dogs waiting for the bus and their little companions getting off and its amazing.
Also the reaction of dogs when people serving in the military come home its more than uplifting its something beyond that hard to explain.
Dogs have an advanced brain IMO and have to be abused or worse still trained /terrorized to become aggressive so the humans are the problems in most cases .Anybody who is lonley or under stress ,depression etc get a dog from a shelter and watch it work its magic the rewards will be incredible |  | | |
