Saw him a few times on the stand up circuit in London just as he was starting out and very clearly talented even then. As you say Boston, so quick with with come backs I am sure he did the Comedy Store impro nights a few times as well when I saw him.
Had some terrible demons that haunted him, but cant detract from his being one of the more influential comedians of the time. RIP Tony. |  |

Was one of those comedians I never got on tv but saw him a few times at the Comedy Store and he was brilliant and pretty sure he was in a play with Ade Edmonson that I went to see called Nevilles Island which was really good

Yes he was out of the limelight for decades.
Struggled with alcohol and his mental health. BiPolar diagnosis.
Very sharp wit accompanied by a massive vulnerability but it has been reported he was finally enjoying his life, when life had been a consistent struggle for him.
Saw a few interviews he has done over the years.

He was horribly dogged by the black dog of mania for decades but was at his core one of the funniest people we've produced in comedy over here for many a year. His illnesses took so much of what he had to offer and could have offered away but he was, when he was well and on top of his game, a comedy genius. RIP. |  |

Yeah, I remember Tony Slattery form my yoof, especially whose line is it anyway and whilst I don't know what happenend to him after the height of his fame , it sounds like it was mainly downhill from there, to the extent that 63 is absolutely no age.
RIP.

That's a great article - quite moving to read it for the first time today.
I met him in 1996/7 - I don't think it gives anything away at this point to say I was a junior staff member admitting him to a clinic. Only had a few brief interactions with him, but in all of them he was a lovely bloke, very quiet and unassuming, especially considering his fame at the time. Really sorry to hear of the pain he went through in later years.

I think it's easier to be amazingly creative or have ingenious thoughts when you are struggling because your own brain can be incredibly complex.
And some ways of thinking, if you look at it from a different angle, can be amusing or funny in the way decisions or ideas pan out.
I used to contribute to a mental health charities newsletter, many moons ago, and when I read back some of the articles I wrote then, these thoughts would simply be impossible for me to produce now, being on the straight and narrow for many years now.
Yes and supporting a football club such as ourselves can almost mimic a bipolar experience. Sometimes we are sailing proudly up above cloud nine, and almost as suddenly we can dip into the depths of darkness. A simplified example but sure you get the drift.
Yes and Tony Slattery you could see was almost teetering on an all too frequent ledge.
