If all fit and firing, who's first choice at CB? 15:10 - Jan 22 with 2554 viewscheeseydane

With Cook and Morrison due back shortly, Fox showing good form, Edwards looking a class player, JCS an important left sided cog, and also JD I guess, who would you start with in a game of huge importance? For example a playoff game?
Could be a real dilemma for MC in the coming months.

Interesting mix of replies.
Those who say Edwards isn't ours so should be down the pecking order as he won't be here next season, does not the same apply to Cook who is out of contract in the summer? No sign of a new contract yet. So in a playoff final, do you play those who will be here next season, or those who won't.

Fitness allowing I would definitely renew Cook’s contract, whatever division we are in.
His performances merit it.

In a play-off final you'd play your best players regardless wouldn't you?

No way would you bench Cook just because it could be his final game?!

I'd say the same goes for Edwards too - if he turns out to be ahead of anyone else we have, let's play him.

Get our strongest team out every week and see where that takes us.

Cook and JCS. Cook and Edwards situation not comparable for me. One is a veteran player who we own and may well continue to own if we see value in another years deal. One is a Southampton player and will be very good for Southampton next year. He's absolutely brilliant and perfect for the way we play, but also learning on our time. To that end, I'd start Morrison ahead of him too if he's back sooner.

Marti likes a left footer on the left (JCS or Fox) and a right footer on the right (Cook or Edwards or Morrison). Morrrison did play on the left when both JCS and Fox were injured, though.

Any of our players should be in ahead of Edwards.
Fox will be back up.
Dunne will be at RB.

Then Cook at RCB as captain and organiser plus whoever is fittest and in form plays CB.

As many on here have said, Cook and JCS are definitely the first pics. The others have all done well, including Fox who I've not liked much but he's winning me over.

The key question was fit and firing.

Cook as captain, JCS as the best defender in the club. When fit being the important word.

I think Morrison has been signed to replace Cook. As abd when he departs.
Dunne is 1st choice RB, Fox is a great fill in, Edward's is not ours..

Would it be the same in August? No, it won't. But, I presume, the OP meant this season.

Morrison was superb before his injury and a good part of our turnaround in form, him and Cook looked a great pairing, JCS is also quality, but very fragile, Edward’s isn’t ours, so when players are fir I expect him to drop out. Fox has been unbelievable since the Pompey game. A tough call for the manager

Morrison is ours, got to play him when fit.

Relying on Cook after he recovers just recreates the problem we are currently solving. Think we need to look forward with what we own.

Post Edwards planning is where I'm at.

I know it's prob. a long shot, but I would be looking to compete for Edwards' signature when his loan ends as, after his horrorshow at Leicester, he looks like he could be the real thing. A ot hinges on whether Cook is renewed, though I also think he could play with us for another couple of years, potentially, especially as he never had any pace to start with.

Fox most improved player at the club IMO.

Was drifting into waster status at one point but that’s defo not who he is. Dependable.

Good points well made…. Morrison and Clark-Salter - both under (assumed) long contracts.

Jimmy Dunne is too valuable at right back in this league, so for that reason he stays away from
CB.

so can't wait for Steve cook to be back in the squad, he will add so much more aggression for our defence and he is a very vital player, don't get me wrong Ronnie and Morgan are so very good in defence but with Cook coming back very soon and Morrison were looking at a proper meaty defence here

Cook first name on team sheet so question is who accompanies him.

Would be JCS as fantastic ability but just too injury prone.

No point being injured for 10 games, coming back for three but not properly match fit then getting injured again. In the Championship just being available for 40 odd games and really wanting it like Jimmy Dunne makes you massively more valuable than some highly technical, accomplished player who is sadly rarely available.

Not sure JCS is sellable due to his injuries but purely on his availability if we could move him on in the summer it might be worth thinking about. Love watching him at his best, but how often do we see that?

For "a game of huge importance...for example a playoff game" I would expect Marti to select our best available fit right and left sided CB pairing. Whether they were owned or loaned wouldnt be a factor unless he couldn't otherwise separate a couple of players.

I think Cook and JCS is a bit of a no brainier when fit and firing
Whether either will be here next season is another matter . Can’t see anyone taking a risk on JCS however . The injuries are back and in full force again aren’t they .

I like Morrison a lot and think he will be a great successor to one of the above although his injury record hasn’t been great either . Fox has been tremendous in the last month . Showing experience and leadership after some horror moments . Fair play to him, but he is a good back up to the others at best.
Edwards looks like he will be a class act but if all our players are fit he probably shouldn’t play . Just because he isn’t ours . However , Southampton might have something to say about that though.

I think you need one senior man in there to organise so either Cook and Morrison or Cook and JCS

I really like Edwards though and would be a dream signing for us next season if we could do it

Slight tangent but I’d like to see if JCS could reprise Dunne’s role at fullback, with perhaps a little more class on the ball. Those two either side of Cook/Morrison/Edwards/Fox, plus Varane and Field, would give us a very solid, tall and strong base. Especially with Paal likely leaving and our current style of play which doesn’t rely on possession.

We have tried Clark salter at left ack a couple of time , Cov away being one and he was awful

For me it’s cook and Morrison

Poll: which is your favouite foot
