Hoping there are a few other baseball fans here (in addition to the NFL malarkey).

Blue Jays just made it to the World Series for the first time in 32 years!

Back in 2016 me & Mrs SLM did a 2-week west coast tour of the US (Boston -> New York -> Philadelphia -> Washington).

We went to see the Red Sox in Boston, tickets we bought before we went. They got trashed by the Orioles (it felt very QPR as the boos rang round the stadium as the Orioles hit two home runs in an innings and stretched their lead...) Found them overall very snooty though, the attitude of a staff member I had a mini-chat with in the club shop in the afternoon of the game was dismissive of anyone non-Bostonian going to watch the Red Sox, and whilst I enjoyed the experience it felt very much like going to watch Liverpool with the Fenway Sports connection. All the history, all the arrogance etc...

When we were in Philadelphia we picked up a couple of tickets to watch the Phillies as they had a home series against the Mets whilst we were there and we could see the stadium lit up from our ridiculously high hotel room.

Absolute opposite experience. Went into the club shop before the game, employee clocks we're two British people, got really excited that a couple of British tourists had decided to come and watch his team, dived into his pocket and pulled out a baseball card for us of the home ground (a much more modern facility than Fenway Park!) then went into the backroom to give us a certificate to certify our first game at Citizens Bank Park. Its absolutely the sort of thing thats actually intended for children but he was so genuine and so enthusiastic that we were really touched by the gesture.

So as a result, I have a much bigger soft spot for the Phillies. They were also crap at the time which brought me much more into my sporting comfort blanket with supporting QPR, and the game that night went on forever and was God-awful quality, eventually finishing 2-1 to the Phillies were it felt like anyone trying to score a run was like, in Clive's words, trying to sh*t a snooker table. Again, much more QPR!

Went to watch the Copa America around the US last year and one of the gameless nights in Houston, we went to watch Astros play against Orioles. It was a Friday night, steaming hot, and some kind of family night involving fireworks and $5 beers. Had a cracking time and it finished 14-11, great use of an evening and everyone was very friendly. Fun mix of locals and large groups of Venezuelans who had traveled to see some Venezuelan bloke who played for them. Think the tickets themselves cost something like $15 too, honestly just a great value night. And I know nothing about baseball, but doesn't take long to get to grips with!

Yeah we had a similar experience watching the Mets when we went in 2018, got given first match certificates. Went back a couple of years ago, enjoyed it so much we went two nights in a row So Blue Jays first, but we have a soft spot for the Mets (obviously preferred to the Yankees!)

I've probably said before, I was a Yankees fan when I first moved to NY, but was quickly schooled that they were in fact c*nts so I bought into that fully and became a Mets fan.

The recent Ryder Cup misbehaviour reminded me that, regardless of their team, New York sports fans are often pretty hard to be around at a game after a couple of Buds and a hearty feed of processed meat. When I started watching the Mets lose it was in Shea Stadium, which was massive, so you'd have plenty of room to sit in a quieter corner and watch the planes land at La Guardia with a brief glance at what was (usually not) going on at the plate.

When they moved to Citi Field, while a great stadium,.everyone was a lot more tightly packed, and you'd be closer to the sort of finely crafted brain dead shyte that Rory and co were last month.

Anyway, every year around this time since coming back here I decide I need to find a better way to stay in touch with highlights. I know I've asked before but am open to any good updates on that. I'm going to make a point this winter to sort this out in time to watch a far richer Mets team lose next season.

I have a mate who is a big Mariners fan, so I went to T Mobile park last October when I was doing a West Coast road trip. Saw Cal Raleigh hit a homer and fell in love.

Pain.

Rodriguez with a runner on base, Big Dumper in next and swinging at ball 4, having already blown a 2-0 and 3-2 series lead. Guess this is being a Mariners fan.

Funny how starting watching from scratch I instantly understood that the Yankees and the Dodgers are the bad guys

YouTube mate. They post a 20 minute highlight reel of every game. I either watch it on the train or cycle in early and watch it before work.

Each team's instagram is great.

The MLB site also has a great story of the game page with little rolling highlight clips. Which is weird, cos if you wanted to keep up with football no one would say "The Premier League website", but genuinely, it does a really good job

id recommend watching the London series MLB games at West Ham although they weren't back this year and next year wont be possible (due to the World Cup and Metallica or someone playing the olympic stadium) It's a fun day out, you can always get tickets for less than cost in the days leading up. always a fun atmosphere

Woah! 11-4 to the Good Guys in game one. Where Addison Barger's (who?) pinch hit grand slam was the first in World Series history. This could be fun week or so.

Don't have the first clue about baseball... But got sucked in during our recent trip to Chicago and obviously cheered on the bears...

Fortunately a 9 year old girl on the neighbouring table in the restaurant explained some of the rules to me... She was a colordo rockies supporter

Still doesn't draw me in to watch now we are back home. I'll stick to cricket thanks

When I was on the way home from New Zealand a couple of years I got talking to a Canadian baseball fan,and i tried to explain the rules of cricket to him.I tried to compare it to baseball rules, but he didn’t seem to understand much by the end of the conversation, especially when I told him that it sometimes takes 5 days to finish as a draw.

Because there’s so many games, you can get cheap tickets. A few times a week they do special specials. In Texas on a Wednesday home game, it’s $1 hotdog nights, no catch! That being said, you’re looking at around $15 for a beer and $10 for a sprite. They do let you take a bottle of water in per person and some snack snacks. What gets me as well is the car parking. $50 to Park in one of the lots that are walkable.

The Phillies are my team. Watched my first ever ball game at Citizen's Bank and fell in love with them. Went and watched them at West Ham last year.

I was, however, in Toronto on the night the Blue Jays won the World Series in '93. Absolutely amazing night. The streets were full of people celebrating late into the night. It reminded me of pictures of VE Day. One of the most vivid memories of my life.

Was really hopeful the Phillies would do it this year, but was not to be. Hence, I am right behind the Blue Jays. They've gotten off to a good start, so fingers crossed for them.

The big concern is the bullpen. Relief pitching has been the weak link all season — though it was better than the Dodgers' last night. The big plus is batting. One through nine the Jays are as good, or better, than any team in the Majors as the stats show. Only Bichette and Guerrero have big numbers but the rest of the line-up is very solid. There was a feeling in some quarters that if the Jays lost the first game they'd crumble. I didn't agree, but in any case it's academic now. It's a proper contest.

Can't comment on the attitude of the staff member you interacted with but a/ Fenway Park is overrun with tourists, foreign and domestic. I'd happily put a bet on it there were at least 100 British Nationals in the stadium that, or any given evening. B/ Facility / Club Shop. The stadium is old, very old, the fans like it that way. Rather like Loftus Rd, they don't want a new ground, they just want it tweaked, it's the single biggest reason tourists come to watch the Red Sox.

Snooty - Yes. Boston, New England, is noted for being the most European part of the country and with that comes the centrism of superiority over others. Note, this is not the prevailing character of your average working stiff, but you'll bump into it throughout the region in business, politics and academia.

Not sure if its a typo or not and certainly not being a di*k but there is 2 baseball teams in Chicago Cubs and White Sox and the Bears play in the NFL. Of course you might be talking about the NFL team and not the baseball.
Wrigley Field is almost as big an attraction as the Cubs being the oldest or second oldest ballpark in extistance in the US and the area surrounding it (Wrigleyville) is an incredible hive of activity with day games and multiple concerts there every year to keep the bars and resturants full.
Back to the thread most of the US and all of Canada are hoping Toronto can break the hold LA has on baseball at the moment and over the next few years with their signed talent but they probably needed to head to Cali up 2-0 instead of 1-1

Take Me Out to the Ballgame on 23:58 - Oct 21 by BrianMcCarthy

"Baseball breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

One of my favourite ever.
As good as sports writing ever got.

Giamatti, though, to give him his due.

Good point. Joe does credit Giamatti here:

His passion shines through in this collection of commentary highlights on the Red Sox.

Nothing like Fenway on a warm summer's night, and no sports moment will ever rival the breaking of the Curse of the Bambino in 2004 and the unbounded joy that night of generations of New Englanders finally beating their pin-striped nemisis in the post-season.

My missus is Canadian and her relatives have been sending merch over for a few years, so my eight year old has been wandering around west London in a Guerrero Jr Blue Jays top for a couple of years - his favourite T shirt

We went over there at the start of the summer and saw them destroy San Francisco. Took our seats, and Guerrero Jr hit a home run on the first ball he faced, it was like it had been written. You could feel the locals getting excited, been brilliant to see it play out

Now just trying to pick which 1am game during half term we sit and watch. 1-1 and could go either way

Disappointing loss last night. That Yamamoto is some pitcher!

Yeah first game was amazing, second game very much back to reality. Fair play to Yamamoto though pitching the whole game, more or less won that one single handed.

Game 3 has 41 year old Max Scherzer as starting pitcher for the Blue Jays! Could either be brilliant, or terrible. And his nickname is Mad Max for a reason
