Update on the pitch 12:23 - Nov 6 with 50790 viewsLeanneConnolly

Please see the below sent to members of the CAB by Jamie Willoughby who has given us permission to share.

"My main message is to reassure all fans that this issue has the 100% focus of the Club, the board and the ownership group. There has understandably been much speculation amongst fans about what action should or could be taken at this point. We are looking at all available options. Some of the more extreme options have significant technical, logistical and/or regulatory challenges associated with them (and in some cases all three of these!) but we are not ruling anything out.

We are working through all of the possibilities with the various 3rd parties involved to assess feasibility. If we consider that any of the options are feasible / deliverable and will materially improve our position, we have the support of the majority ownership group to proceed with them.

In the meantime, we continue to carry out remedial work to the pitch and manage the current situation as best we can"

Jim was interviewed on Radio Noblot this evening. It was nice to hear him have a few words with Keef.
A little teaser from him regarding the pitch, though, wbere he said he expected the pitch to be permanently sorted in a couple of weeks if they can muster everything and "get the backing from the League". If I heard correctly..
Was around about half five if any one has the ability to replay the interview.

Agree, those covers are obviously the real deal and they work well. The amount of rain has been biblical but it doesn't seem to have come up through the surface of the pitch and the surrounds weren't flooded. I suppose the problem now would be what happens to the pitch if it rains once the covers are removed and during the lead up to kick off and the match itself. The covers had been removed by 10am this morning.

Not too sure TS, but from the photos posted the other day it seems they inflate enough to do work on the pitch whilst the covers are still covering the pitch, maybe they only took them off 'early' today knowing the forecast was fairly dry up until kick off, not sure how late they could leave the covers in place prior to a kick off.

Well they obviously work very well under extreme weather.

24 min 15secs...interesting listen that about the pitch. McNulty says...'I'm hoping plans can be agreed with the league and everybody else that will put the problem with the pitch to bed within the next couple of weeks and hopefully it wont be a problem from that point on'. I'm wondering if that's an agreement to play elsewhere because replacing the pitch can't be done in that time frame. Is it now feasable to lay a new pitch mid season and have it ready for the last two or three months of the season, with new hybrid pitches maybe it is ?

Im sure somebody fairly recently laid a pitch in ridiculous time, something to do with the grass being mixed with a synthetic type grass too, wasn't this around a Dale fixture like against Spurs or someone similar.

Just been doing some on line searches and laying a new synthetic pitch in winter is perfectly feasable and can be done within two months. It's going to be interesting to see what plans are being proposed. McNulty sounded quietly confident that the pitch issues could soon be a thing of the past. A short period of groundsharing in order to lay a pitch that is fit for purpose for years to come would be worth the upheaval. Maybe try to switch our home fixtures to later in the season and play away games in order to sort out the pitch could be another option.

For comparative purposes the new pitch at the Shay was laid and ready for use in eight weeks over the summer. Work started in the first week in July and it was ready for use by the first week in September.
It was during a decent spell of weather though if that’s a factor.
It cost 800k and half of that was a grant from some fund or other. Perhaps such funding could be available for Spotland?

The pitch was totally relaid in a week before the Spurs game.

In the Scunthorpe postponement thread a 55 day window was identified from 30/11 when we had only two home league games scheduled from 30/11:

30/12 Hartlepool
3/1 Brackley

That period is now one week less as we play Southend on 6/12 but the opportunity is still there.

Can you compare to our requirements now though? When it’s not just a pitch, it the drainage system that’s the issue too, which will surely add a significant amount of time on previous pitch renewal durations.

Poll: 24/25 season ticket, how many free games would you consider fair?

As I understand it was pretty much the same scenario at the Shay as we have at Spotland.
Drains had to be replaced and the whole pitch infrastructure renewed.

Do the drains need relaying? There's been so much discussion about the pitch over the years i wasn't aware of that. Maybe the stuff thrown on the pitch has led to it compacting at a certain depth and the water can't seep through.

Wasn't the discussion that the biggest issue was that the drains hadn't been touched since 1907? Then they were looked at and somehow got worse...

Not 100% sure anymore since there's been hat much happen to it. Was it the drains that Bottomley's mates botched?

So according to that there are hundreds of drains under the pitch and a new main drain was installed along the Sandy Lane end in just 2022. Something major has failed in the time since then - because they are not draining now. Whether we can still use this drainage system remains to be seen - until the pitch and the surrounding area is dug up and they are looked at we won't know. It could turn out they aren't fit for purpose anymore and a new modern system has to be installed for it to work properly going forward. Hopefully we get the best people we can to do the job (within reason) so it is sorted once and for all.

Again im not sure and maybe dreaming this up, but im sure i heard back then the problem wasn't with the actual work initially carried out but more the after care wasn't done to 'spec', maybe this was a corner cut due to the restricted finances at the time perhaps with the mess the club sadly found itself in, again who knows.

A theatre without a stage is useless. A football club without a pitch is useless. It comes before everything else. Poor management of the club down the years is responsible and unfortunately the Ogden family are now picking up the tab. Big playing budgets afforded to managers over recent years who weren't fit for purpose and a neglected pitch that is useless. The club has been poorly managed and the decision making in the boardroom has also been terrible. The state of the pitch is the legacy of those making the decisions in the boardroom down the years.

Hi. Have we hired the dome for a set amount of time or was it just a one off for last week.

After watching the game in the Ratcliffe yesterday, I walked past the back corner of the ground and it was easy to see that the usual covers have returned following the passing of the wonderdome. Given the 2 upcoming home fixtures in the next 6 days, and the iffy rain forecast for the week (including today's constant showers), it'll be interesting to see what measures are taken to keep these games on.

The 'Tinpot Trophy' game on Tuesday should have been moved to a different venue. With no dome in place I'm not optimistic about next Saturday's game going ahead looking at the week's weather forecast.
