...leaving the UK, claiming uncertainty about taxes, proposed fiscal policies which have them running for cover. Wonder will that have any repercussions in the boardroom?

It's Lakshmi Mittal who is scuttling off to Switzerland:

https://www.cityam.com/steel-mogul-lakshmi-mittal-leaves-uk-for-switzerland-and-

The reason stated is that he would be taxed on overseas income and assets if he stayed here:

"In March this year, it was reported that Mittal had told his associates that he was planning to quit as a result of the decision to end the non-dom regime, which allowed some people to avoid paying tax on foreign income and assets. "

Presumably going to Switzerland solves that problem for him.

There's no word on what Amit will do. But at the top of his Twitter feed he reposts an article about the Revolut co-founder sloping off to the UAE. Which might mean he is considering his options.

Overall though it shouldn't make any difference in the boardroom. Ruben pretty much has complete control of the club now.

I doubt it will have any repercussions as their shareholding is fairly minimal these days, something like 3%.

The bloke has an estimated $20bn fortune btw, he's hardly going to be using a food bank any day now

Last time I saw the shareholders split Mittal had 13%.

He's not one of the Patriotic Millionaires then. Rather, he's an Unpatriotic Billionaire.

He was set on staying and has always been keen to pay his share.

One part of the non dom changes meant that nom doms resident here would pay inheritance tax here on all worldwide (not just UK) assets upon death. For Mittal that would be billions so he is leaving. Treasury were repeatedly warned this would happen. Lots of high net worth's have left as a result.

Not a political message btw as Jeremy Hunt started these changes carried on by the current government.

They are so greedy that they want it all, and even after that, they want to ensure no one else has it.

Think if we had a billion, had been used to having billions for years, and the country was in trouble, most people would be okay with the government getting a load of it after our death. Of course, we could pressure the government for a deal, saying it all had to go on the NHS after the first £100m or something like that.

But they don't even do campaigns like that.
They want it all, because they can.

Fat Cats!

It’s hardly an isolated incident…not that long ago the PM was benefitting from non dom benefits directly. Until it became a ‘distraction.’

What do you reckon the Sunaks have done since he lost that public role ?

If you tax people too much and they have the option of mobility, they will elect to pay their taxes somewhere else that suits them.

Norway has done the same, now most of them are somewhere else too. At least one of them is in Lucerne, having probably just negotiated his own specific deal on wealth tax and inheritance etc.

Something is worth a lot more than nothing, especially when it’s millions in tax.

Doesn’t make it right but there’s a lot of competition for it, at many levels, in many places. Throw in a passport and Bob’s your uncle.

They can’t take their houses with them,so if they sell them somebody else will pick up the bill. And if they introduce a mansion tax someone will have to pay the tax bill.

I would imagine they own enough property to do so via a corporate entity and therefore make it easier to transfer ownership and pay less tax that way but who knows. Not to mention trusts and blind trusts, as we have seen in football.

There are so many levels of different economies these days it’s hard to know where to even start. Money laundering alone is bigger than most country's GDP these days.

One thing is for sure, if you have enough dosh then plenty of other doors open up with a lot less WD40.

Non doms typically aren’t fellow citizens. They are usually from other countries taking advantage of our policies to attract tax that could be paid somewhere else.

It’s a fairly competitive market for a billionaire’s tax bill.

This thread has taken an interesting turn. I am fascinated and horrified by the uber rich and the burgeoning inequality between the haves and the have nots. For example:

CEO-to-worker pay ratio in 1965: 20-1
CEO-to-worker pay ratio in 1990: 75-1
CEO-to-worker pay ratio in 2025: 280-to-1

The 2025 Times rich list shows that in the UK, the richest 1% have more wealth than 70% of the population combined. And this inequality continues to grow.

What are we not more outraged at this?

For me what’s more important is what we spend it on. I’d love it if 1 government would look to reduce income tax for the lower rate tax payers by 5% or increase the tax allowance. It would cost a bit, maybe 20bn but I think that would really help those that need it most.
