We’re up there,we have a decent squad and manager - if we’re going to do it,what would/could stop them ?

Absolutely think we should not do this. Build a foundation. We now have a number of sellable assets which is a start.

Going up? Not sure I want that. Even the best case scenario is hanging around lower mid table like Brentford, hardly sets the pulse racing. I suppose getting to that position and snagging a cup might be the ultimate ambition.

We’ve been hanging around lower mid table for the last ten years in the Championship.

Both are manageable but if you asked Palace fans whether they’d rather have been us or them over the last ten years I’d imagine they’d all rather be them.

You never know, with promotion the owners might even push the boat out and furnish the SAR with a working sound system, I’ve all but given up on the leg room.

I'd be ignoring the league table for now, we are in a group of teams between 5th and 15th separated by 4 points. Lose the next 2 - Boro on incredible form and we just know the old boss will want one over us v Leicester, don't blame him - and we could be back in 16th. We know things are going to be streaky under Jules, we've won 4 in 5 now and might win 1 in 5 next. This will happen. Let's just focus on what we are doing, just being a better football club playing better football and developing players, no rush.

Whatever the Nourry haters say, he’s got more signings right than wrong this last summer. BUT, that doesn’t mean the same will happen in January - history tells us that January is rarely a time for solid, long-term buys.

Keep to the plan of year-on-year improvement, strengthening the weak areas; possibly selling on a strong player for funds (with a replacement in the wings or incoming). It’s all still a lottery. But you have to be in it to win anything. Keep going and we just might win a promotion and stick there for a few years.

EPL is a shit of a league though. It’s like a very rich, fit but ugly, boring girl - do you make your choice and sell your soul! I’m not comfortable with it, but the cash benefits are nice. Where’s the brown paper bag?

I don't think many if any of Nourry's critics take issue with the players he's brought in.

I would summarise the idea behind this thread as the plans working, let's change the plan.

To which we need a simple answer - no.

As a Nourry critic (not a hater, there is a distinction between not liking how someone runs something you've supported your whole life and hating them personally) I think it's a good test of his leadership. Les often seemed to get overruled by the managers and owners on spending big as soon as we got a sniff, so will be interesting to see if he can keep that in check.

Yeah, I suspect the biggest challenge of any DoF here is keeping individual board members from getting involved.

Ted Said: I'd be more than happy to ''bob'' around mid table In the Championship winning some losing some, the thought of promotion fills me with dread.

Seriously, what's the point of even turning up if all your aspirations are to "bob around mid table".

It's a sport, you should want to win every game and be disappointed when you don't.

Love it or hate it, I want us to be in the Premier, despite all that entails, because it would mean that we've been successful on the football pitch and by definition would have had some amazing days in that promotion season as opposed to bobbing around!

A 96th minute winner against Birmingham in a mid-table clash or a 96th minute winner against one/all of the top 6. You decide?!

Standards has been mentioned a lot recently, but one in which we bobble around in midtable in the Championship is not one I aspire to.

Last time we were in the PL, we came bottom, losing 24 games, winning eight. Not too many 96th minute winners in there. Getting promoted the year before incurred a world record fine, saddling the club with debt and player wages that we are only just now, eleven years later, emerging cautiously from.

A promotion season would be great. That summer of anticipation would be great. The actual season would probably be infuriating, expensive and, going on recent past experiences, mostly miserable.

I suppose you could have a Sunderland season, that looks good. But you could also have a Burnley season, which looks hard yards. Bearing how far ahead of us Burnley were last season when we played them, I think we need to build like Brentford did over a few seasons - and that probably means a few years bobbing around the upper midtable, flirting with the playoffs sometimes. Here for that, sounds better than the last decade.

This team got beaten by Coventry 7-1, by Ipswich 1-4, by Southampton 1-2...those are play-off/promotion teams. We're not there yet.

Right it's a long long season. We are not a promotional contender..... yet. What we are is a really decent strong team certainly better than most we have had in a while. Honestly would I want a season in the Premier sh ite with VAR ruining goals like Tuesdays ? With wan ky commentary telling us we need to buy every sh it kicking has been with a foreign or just pay sean wa nk philips 50.k pw to stroll in and say this is not my club and not celebrate wimning goals away to chelsea. !! No spending on anyone even a keeper imo we can get through with what we got. If by some chance we go up (unlikely) then we have a party season take the money and build when we go back down. This has to be a long term build like Brentford ect. Not being negative just sensible imo. Any additional players could damage the team ethos here which can be seen in abundance

I think a couple will come in , even if we do miss out on the play oiffs by a bit it means hopefully less coming in during the summer so less waiting time for them to bed in for next season which would give us the chance of a better start , obv left and right backs will need to come in though .

hopefully keepr coming in isnt dieng

I mean I fully get the euphoria of scoring a last minute winner and that can lead to us losing the run of ourselves. But seriously, we have been down this route so many times in the past and it has -without exception - ended badly. Consequently we end up taking two or three years cleaning up our mess and getting back to a position of substainability (where we are now). Honestly we have been extremely fortunate not to have been relegated to League 1 on at least two occasions as we lurch from ‘boom or bust’ in the past decade or so.
Let’s be patient. Personally in no rush to get back to the Premier League, just enjoying being competitive and winning more than we are losing at present. But IF we are to gain promotion lets do it in the right way, like Brentford, or Bournemouth or Crystal Palace, so that we can make a decent fist of staying there and perhaps challenging for a European spot eventually. First we will have to endure some pain, like selling Burrell and /or Madsen. But for a decent wedge, not because we have to and replacing them with a better version that will make us stronger in the long run.
We have got ourselves (once again) out of the mire, let’s not blow it by behaving irrationally. Let’s learn from previous mistakes and become stronger incrementally over the next few years.

I prefer the be patient, build slowly approach, I really do, but my concern is that this club is prone to massive slumps in form, major personnel churn and seismic changes in strategy.

That means that part of me thinks that if - *if* - we do have a chance of going up, we need to seize it, without breaking P&S rules, mind.

As a club, we never seem to be far away from a meltdown plus we have been in this league for a long time without a real sniff of promotion.

A tricky situation, I'm torn.

Actually, a different question.
BUT, what should the club do if someone came in with an offer for one of our better players?

I mean the idea is to buy cheap and sell high, so what should we do if someone in the race really wanted Burrell for example?

Now that would be interesting to see what the owners would do

Well that is the buisness plan buiy for peanuts and sell when they have imporved , burrell will be on peoples radar im sure , last seasons golden egg was varanne he seems to have gone backwards this season not as effective as he was not as forward passing as we saw second half of the season , we turned down the offer from him this summer becuase it didnt meet our valuation at the time , who else is there we could sell ?
Madson ?
ive a feeling Kolli will be gone by feb be it on loan or sold with a decent sell on clause

we dont really have much esle in sellable optons at the moment id say

You never know?
January is usually the window for clubs looking for FW's when scoring is a problem.

I doubt we will sell Kolli for much, given his lack of experience. The spin will probably be on a large sell on fee if/when he goes.

I think for Varane and Madsen the game is to get them to 50+ apps in the Champ which adds some perceived value to them, sort of de-risks any bidders.

Not sure there are any other stand outs. I always thought Chair would be sold on, but his recent injury spells have killed this and I don't see a dream move coming anytime for him.
-- Interestingly when I played FIFA he always went to Leicester or Brighton!
