| Sam field 09:26 - Jan 21 with 2966 views | wombat | With us now being down to one halfish fit left back and esquedina being out for a period of time , do we let him go this window ? id say no he covers to many postions in the squad esp left back , and one of the few central midfield players who does actually try and get into the oppostions box . | |

| Sam field on 09:30 - Jan 21 with 2381 views | nix | I think you’re right. He’s surely our only alternative LB now. Gutted for Esquerdinha. Hope it isn’t the worst case scenario. Losing two LBs to ACls would be hugely unlucky for the players as well as the club and the fans. | | | |

| Sam field on 09:34 - Jan 21 with 2336 views | Watford_Ranger | Keep if we can. Maybe he’s desperate to go and be first choice somewhere. Maybe wants to be nearer family if they’re in the Midlands but there’s not much to be made financially from selling him, doubt the wages are massive and he’s clearly a good bloke. Niko Hamelainen now plays in the Norwegian second tier if we are looking for a replacement. | | | |
| Sam field on 09:38 - Jan 21 with 2310 views | loftus77 | Yep, if he's happy, I would say retain him here as an important team player. Good, solid, versatile footballer imho. I wouldn't imagine he'd want to play regular League One football with Oxford next season. | | | |
| Sam field on 09:44 - Jan 21 with 2266 views | Rsole | Until the injury, it sounded like he was on his way out. I guess his salary would release funds for others. Now I’m not sure what we plan to do. I know he can cover LB but against a pacy winger, he really struggles. Maybe we have someone else lined up before next week. | |

We should be fighting tooth and nail to keep him with us - players like him are like gold dust; committed to the cause, never gives less than 100%, never bitches and moans about not being an automatic first choice pick, which he'd be more than entitled to do giving how many times he's singlehandedly rescued the team over the years. As Clive has said on more than one occasion, you let players like that go at your peril.

Exactly , given that the manager quite rightly often talks about consistency then over the last 3/4 seasons then Sam has easily been in the top 3 or 4 best players for that trait . He also appears to be a real team player & should probably have been given more game time this season . | | | | Login to get fewer ads

If only he could be coached to make a few more risky/forward passes, he'd be a hands-down starter. I wonder how Sam sees this.

We are short of these player types but...we need to sell so I suppose it will depend on how much. We have cover in Morgan/Varane/Madsen/Hayden and Edwards can play her also. I'd be sad to see him go but perhaps we might need to.

Given his age, what would we get for Sam Field? £2m max? Sell Varane for £4-5m instead. Play Field, Hayden as back up. If the sale provides any funds after covering transfer fees committed to/amortised, focus on finding a developmental prospect to cover Madsen. There is no “need” to sell Field or much logical sense in doing so.

If you believe we can get £2m for Field then the answer is right there as to why he should be sold.

Don’t understand? Is £2m too high or low? Age plays a massive part in a player’s value. Field is 27, turning 28 in May. Varane is 24 turning 25 in September. Almost a 3.5 yr age difference, which, funnily enough is the likely length of contact if he is to sold. Anyone purchasing Field won’t be able to see him on for much when he is 30, so demand and his value is reduced accordingly. Varane has played a lot fewer games in his career, could improve further, and will still be 26/27 when you decide you might want to sell him again. Personally think Field is the better all round player, especially in this league. If someone offers silly money to Field, you sell, as you would anyone. But if it’s for £2m or feasibly lower, I think it’s a silly decision, as per Clive’s statement reasoning on the match report thread.
| Sam field on 20:49 - Jan 22 with 998 views | cheeseydane | Have to echo E15s opinion. Why on earth would we be looking to shift Sam? As said above, he's been unjustly underplayed this seaon. He's reliable, experienced, better than some of our starters, versatile and can fill many holes, but most important for me at least, it feels like he's one of us. If you want a firesale, start with Dembele. Offers over 50 quid considered. [Post edited 22 Jan 20:53]

| Sam field on 20:53 - Jan 22 with 978 views | simmo | The younger this squad gets, the more important the likes of Sam Field are to a team. Almost to the point of being invaluable. Did we learn nothing from Alan Browne? Sunderland with all the trinkets and no substance, a little grit and they turn a corner. Boro doing the same now with him. I think you'd struggle to get promoted with a team of Sam Fields, but you never will without a couple. | |

Yep. Yet more evidence of the levels of hubris that seem to pervade through this club in a number of areas at present, displayed by those in authority. Add that to the sale of Sam Field being in their contemplation, a player who I believe, along with Hayden, are better partners for Madsen than Varane, as they are both far more diligent in their defensive duties than Varane is. Hayden has started 6 league games, in which he has played his part in 4 shut-outs. [Post edited 23 Jan 8:37]

None of these players ever seem to get a knock, be fit for the bench the next game at least and then get on with it. Every injury ends up being 8+ games out. 6 week for Chair now, JCS doing JCS things (see you at Easter maybe if you can mate), Poku was out for three months then another month and now presumably at least another month, Varane having his own Winter break.
| Sam field on 09:35 - Jan 23 with 332 views | LazyFan | No one is paying £2m for Sam Field. We asked Oxford for £1m, and they went out and got a younger player for half that. Also, if I were Field, I would go "no thanks" and stay at QPR, where, with our injury stats, I am always gonna get some game time. Don't forget, Hayden gets injured sometimes, too, and he's getting older. But if someone paid £1m for Field, I would take it as for that money we can get a lower league 22-year-old who maybe the next Sam Field, that's how we got him in the first place. I would also sell Varane for £5m as well. For me, these are decent players, but they are not key (Field used to be, but we have moved on as a Squad). If we can raise money to help them find the next Eze or Chair, then we should do it. Thats the risk but you have to do it otherwise L1 is our future. | |

also paul smyth gets the living hell kicked out of him every game , late tackles you name it , yet rarely injured , think he played the last thirs of last season with a groin injury and was still a better option than some who were supposeldy fully fit. wouldnt stick chair in the dosnt fancy it club but the rest of them without doubt are.
