| Has the game gone? on 17:48 - Mar 4 with 1448 views | colinallcars | In reference to the 1967 thread - that team was so so ebulliant, no shirkers, no cheats although someone likened Rodney to a “dying swan” because he allegedly went down easily in the box. Maybe, but he got kicked all over the place by craggy defenders who got away with it then. | | | |

True, and he deliberately played for them. He'd keep his foot on the ball in the penalty area and roll it around while defenders' boots came flying in from all directions. Eventually one of them would get pissed off and take him out. He'd just get up, grin, and put the ball on the penalty spot.

| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

I can’t recommend that article enough. I was going to post on this thread that in some ways I agree with the general premise and in some ways not, but this article puts it much better than I ever could. Liew is an excellent writer (although Jonathan Agnew and others may disagree.)

Interesting piece. Manages to list some of the gripes about the modern game while still defending the product and making the reasonable point that every generation had it's own gripes about the way the game is changing. Maybe it is just a generation thing and maybe I am becoming a grumpy old git. And maybe da yoot thinks all that grappling at corners, deliberately delaying every restart, and the VAR tension is great. It would be an interesting experiment to get a bunch of young fans to sit through the 1970 World Cup Final to see what they make of it. Would they delight in the creativity, skill, and flair of the Brazilians tearing the best organised and most cynical defenders of their generation a new one, or would they go full Alan Hansen and come away with the conclusion that the Italians were just crap at defending and tactically naive?

True - if you rewatch that England v Maradona world cup match its 90 minutes of English players attempting to kick the Sh1t out of him (and failing). | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Although ironically, just before scoring his wonder goal, Hoddle got blatantly fouled but the ref decided to play on.

It doesn’t seem to have affected Palace too much as it’s now 3-1,and the spurs fans are hitting the high road. Will they have the best ground in the championship?
| Has the game gone? on 07:13 - Mar 6 with 308 views | numptydumpty | Offsides and Penalty decisions by VAR so difficult to understand ! And your fringe at the top of your forehead being offside is bonkers ! The auditions for "Saving Private Ryan" when a player leaves his leg behind to get contact from the opposition players big toe ! Surrounding the referee attempting to get a nomination for best dramatic performance at the Baftas ! Youtubers and fantasy football experts making millions out of the game from their back bedrooms ! And 40% of the game being played between the centre backs and the goalkeeper ! Progress, they say - wouldn't class myself as a dinosaur, but on reflection do feel sadly there are many more negatives than positives with regards to how the game is today. i remember loving the 82, 86 and 90 world cups. Yet under Southgate's era, we were much more successful, i think two semi final appearances and two finals also, but i was generally bored watching it and didnt enjoy it at all. Progress is not always the way, and especially if passion, excitement and unpredictability are taken out of the game !!! As to the question - Has the game gone ? There is no doubt !!!
