Couldn't remember that at all, not that I go to every game. But no, I'm right.

I reckon that was v Spurs, 2015. Kane got two, Sandro and his exploding knee got one.

Think I might have got confused with the games, maybe I was thinking about Jamie Vardy.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

It wasn’t a typo or a spelling error. You clearly thought his name were Dan Burns as that’s how you referred to him three different times whilst giving him stick each time.

I couldn’t care less about spelling or grammatical errors.

The reason I called it out as I’m just absolutely sick and tired of hearing and reading English football fans slagging off England players and Managers. It’s completely incessant and cyclical. It doesn’t matter who we appoint as manager or who that manager picks, there’s just a steady stream of negativity all the time. We had years of people whinging about Southgate picking Maguire, now people are whinging Tuchel hasn’t. People hate Jordan Henderson because he’s getting on a bit. And apparently Dan Burn is next on the conveyor belt to be slagged off for how he couldn’t possibly help England win a World Cup a month before he’s ever even played in a World Cup.

I think it’s utterly ludicrous. In the vast majority of major tournaments the star players are rarely the ones you expected them to be pre-tournament. And the players that shine for England often tend to be some of the ones you didn’t expect. Kane and Bellingham were slagged off pretty relentlessly for the entirety of the last Euros. They’ve slid back into favour of the English psyche but how long will that last? One 0-0 draw with Ghana I’m sure will be enough to ostracise them as overrated overpaid wastes of space.

Is there at least a chance that Tuchel has a bloody good idea of how to win football tournaments? Given that he has, ya know, won a few football tournaments. Is there a chance that he picked players he’s knows he can trust to execute a plan? A chance he knows he’ll have to be tactically superior as we’ll never be able to compete technically with the top teams and he’s picked a squad to suit that tactical plan?

Tuchel has a literally unblemished qualifying record and someone on here has listed him as his all time least favourite England manager. It’s absolute madness. Steve McLaren couldn’t get out of Euros qualifying by getting a result against Croatia at Wembley ffs. But this guy is the worst?

As a county we have to understand this isn’t normal. The pressure these blokes work under every other summer is completely abnormal. Ireland, Italy and Wales aren’t even there. Italy won’t have been to a WC for at least 16 years at their next opportunity. And here are the English slagging off their manager and players before a ball’s been kicked after a literally perfect qualifying campaign. I bet they’d take Tuchel AND this squad off of our hands in an instant.

It’s just all finger pointing and bitchiness and it always has been. It’s the one constant since I’ve been alive. Is it any wonder we don’t thrive in these tournaments?

Your contribution to that negativity by criticising a man so readily despite not actually knowing his surname waved a red rag straight at me and there’s your context.

I will apologise for singling you out. You don’t deserve that in any way, it was just what lit my touch paper.

Think I’ll give this thread and any other England football content a swerve for the next month now. I’m just going to support these men - whoever they are - resolutely and without waver as they have a chance to make my lifelong hopes and dreams come true. Maybe if more people took that attitude we’d already have another couple of stars on our shirt by now.

Blimey.

I called a man who is named Dan Burn "Dan Burns" three times while saying I don't think he's really a WC footballer, as he's being eased out of the Newcastle team in favour of a guy who I think is possibly a better left back and hasn't been picked.

So what?

It's such a mild opinion, a tiny mistake. I have seen Burn(s) play in the flesh against QPR for Wigan, Birmingham and Fulham a decade ago (BECAUSE HE'S 34!) and I thought he was a bang average Championship lump then. Maybe you remember those games too? Maybe not. Who cares.

I'm not really an "England fan" so feel no duty to team morale. I like watching the games, I hope they win, the pub won't get smashed up and everyone's in a good mood. I like all WC matches, though. Dykes ahead of McBurnie is also weird. So?

I am a QPR fan. That's who I support and all I really care deeply about, football-wise. This is a QPR messageboard, with a thread about England that all are free to offer opinion on. That is in my view legitimate and I don't feel being the focus of your fury at the nation lumping pressure on the national football team in tournaments is remotely fair or rational.

Incidentally, Martin Samuel wrote a well-subbed column in The TImes today which articulates exactly what I also think about Tuchel. Read it and maybe a compose strong letter to the editor.

Peace.

Martin Samuel and co have ridiculous expectations. France, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Brazil all have better squads and better teams then England. If we get to the semi final we've done well imo

Samuel is simply repeating the FA's own reasons given for appointing Tuchel in 2024, a mercenary (in the best possible sense) tasked with the "mandate to end the nation's 60-year trophy drought". He was not hired to build slowly, like Southgate. The FA explicitly said they "expect him to deliver England’s first major title since 1966."

These are quotes from the FA upon appointing him. They can be read in part on their website.

Mark Bullingham: “Fundamentally we wanted to hire a coaching team to give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament...to win the World Cup in 2026."

He took over from a bloke whose last game was getting England into the Euro final (playing quite poorly, but still) and losing it with six minutes left. The stated goal is to better that.

Martin Samuel did not set the expectation. He's just reminding the FA of it. Of course it's a mad expectation, I agree, and that semis would be impressive. Just as it was under Southgate.

Doesn't that just mean he's picked the players that play for the biggest clubs who always win stuff? Not always a sign of quality.

Apart from Kane and arguably Bellingham and Rice I won't think we've got anyone particularly great. Most of the 1998 world cup team would walk into this team, Gazza, Fowler and Ian Wright would be starters now and didn't even make that squad!

So in summary...

I said:

'Not sure we've ever had a better pedigree'

and you said:

'No! That just means they have a better pedigree'

England have World class players in their spine :

Marc Guehi (Defence)

Declan Rice (Midfield)

Harry Kane (Forward)

We have about as much chance, as we have with other years gone by. But agree in terms of squad we rank about 5th or 6th for me.

I actually think we could have a decent tournament - knockout football on the night - gives squads not so good, more of a chance.

Normally, there is an expectation, thatwe have a great chance of winning the whole thing, however this time, i dont think there are any expectations at all of that, which perversely could work in our favour, this time.

Am looking forward to it, but when the football starts, am certain my excitement will undoubtedly be dimmed by the football, on display !!!

Who knows !!!

It was Vardy. 0-1 Leicester. The squirrel was on the pitch.

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Well I just assumed you were talking about how good the players are at football compared to previous teams so responded to that.

If you actually meant other interpretations of the word like the the lineage or ancestral background of a person or perhaps the recorded genealogy of a purebred animal then great have fun with that.

I'm sure that is what they want but on paper there are several sides better than England this summer. That doesn't mean we can't win it but I think they have a far better chance in 2028 than they do this summer

I don't know if you are saying i'm right, saying i'm wrong, or delivering a lexicology lecture.

Pedigree has more than one definition.

We've have more trophy laden players than we've ever had before. That was the extent of my point.

I don't think Fowler or Wright start over Kane, unless they play two up front.

While we're at it, if we're talking about pre Wenger 1996 Gazza trying to operate in the athlete heavy 2026 game, he's not getting in any EFL side let alone dislodging Jude Bellingham or Ebere Eze.

In reverse, I can't see Eze scoring a volley against Scotland after a season of curry and boozing.

These are players of their time. They are almost different games now.
