| England on 13:49 - May 22 by Watford_Ranger | With the number of games and heat there’ll probably be a need to change it in midfield in particular more than usual. You’re right that there’s no combination of players that won’t raise eyebrows and it’s a bi-annual tradition to either demand more experience even if those players are out of form or demand players in form go over previous failures. But still, Henderson. Loads of defenders because some of them aren’t properly fit. Arguably not enough in terms of game-changers. It is an odd mix he’s gone for. Presumably O’Reilly is nailed on to play left-back and rightly so but you’d think a more conventional LB such as Hall would be an option rather than shoehorning Spence/Burn in there. |
possibly but I think he has options to change it and also when you look at those games in march a lot of these fringe players were given a chance and none of them took it

| England on 12:35 - May 22 by TK1 | Might be shallow in terms of quality but he's picked as many left backs as goalies and CFs: O'Reilly, Burns, Spence. |
His name is Dan Burn. | | | |
| England on 14:37 - May 22 with 2154 views | HAYESBOY | IMO Tuchel has lost his mind. Burn, Henderson, Stones, Livramento, and Toney should be nowhere near the squad. I would also question taking James due to not playing lately, but at a push he goes as we have no one else. Spence I can understand for cover at both full backs. Stones and Livramento have not played in the last 2-3 months. Livramento hasn't made the bench even due to injury. Toney plays in a Sunday league. Burn hasn't played well for half the season. Henderson must have photo's of Tuchel because how he keeps getting in the squad is beyond me. He also has not started for Brentford for a while. IMO opinion: Keepers: Pickford - Henderson - Trafford Defenders: Spence - Hall - Geuhi - Konsa - Quansah - Maguire - O'Reilly - Shaw - James Midfield: Rice - Anderson - Garner - Mainoo Attacking midfieders: Saka - Gordon - Rogers - Eze - Rashford - Madueke - Bellingham Strikers: Kane - Watkins - Wellbeck | |

You say he's lost his mind but you are taking 3 left backs and for me Maguire over Stones is madness. Stones has to go, been one of our best ever defenders and can play in midfield. No brainer, he'll be starting let along making the squad. He hardly played before the Euros eithers and was still one of our best players Toney is an odd one but I'm not sure Welbeck is any better than him and his goal record playing in the heat is still superb. Henderson is there to raise standards, gives it everything in training and makes players around him better whilst also being a good player himself. A leader on and off the pitch. We talk on QPR about needing players like that and then can't understand why England want the same. Overall though Tuchel said it very well today, it's not about picking the best 26 players it's about the best team, who will get the best out of each other, be unselfish and support each other in what will hopefully be a long camp.

Stones hasn't played for months. Shaw goes as he can play left CB as well. O'Reilly is down as a left back but he can also move into midfield. Two versatile players. Henderson is dog5hit. Hasn't got a forward thinking bone in his body. There's enough experience in the team already, doesn't need Henderson. Henderson can raise standards from the sideline. Maguire goes at a push, certainly over Stones. Maguire has played in the last 16 games, Stones has played none. Ivan Toney can play in the heat? He's from Northampton. If that's the criteria to get in the squad then we are fcked.

Really? I think about from a couple the team is pretty average. Kane is obviously good, but apart from that nothing to get too excited about.

left back in the one area I think he's not got enough cover and is relying on utility players but we also had that at the last Euros with the left back not being fit until the semi final. I suppose it's a matter of opinion. I'd prefer Stones over Maguire who can play in midfield as well. I don't think Maguire handled it very well yesterday throwing a strop online, Tuchel talks so much about being unselfish I think he showed why he's not been picked with all that Henderson I wouldn't pick but Tuchel has said from day 1 he would be going and why so it's no real surprise. Toney having experience of playing in the kind of conditions we will face is a bonus and he's 3rd choice at best anyway so not worth worrying about, like getting angry about Calvert-Lewin going to the 2020 Euros

Agree on Maguire releasing a statement before the squad had been announced. It was petty and not necessary. It shows a lack of respect for the other players.

Just pick the best, most talented players and manage them. It's the World Cup. I want to see the best players in the world, not Jordan Henderson parking the bus, not matter how good he is at it. Mistake not taking Maguire as well. Don't remember him making too many mistakes at the back. It was always Kyle Walker.

Balance in squad and team is important. The selections of Scholes Lampard Gerrard never worked well in a team. If we had played Carrick alongside one of them it would have worked better IMHO. We want to win but if we leading Brazil 3 - 1 with ten minutes to go, bringing on a sub that locks up shop in the middle would be the key. Covering all bases. Dont want a Southgate perfoming team either. Would only use Henderson for this role myself. But think its sensible. Many of the squad wont play but reasons for their selection can be made given injuries, situations in games etc. Who would you have instead of Henderson... Am guessing Wharton which i do understand but i think its one tournament too soon for him currently myself and would go for experience and also a decent voice in the camp. [Post edited 22 May 18:13]

Trent plays on the right, Spence on the left although he can play on the right too. Bowen and Gordon ditto. Tuchel knows the personalities and who is going to be good company for the other players and good for squad spirit. Happy to trust his judgement.
| England on 21:18 - May 22 with 1449 views | rbee | On the face of it the England 2026 squad doesn't fill me with much optimism until you consider the players missing from the Euros 2024 squad that reached the final. Aaron Ramsdale Kyle Walker Luke Shaw Lewis Dunk Joe Gomez Kieran Trippier Trent Alexander-Arnold Conor Gallagher Adam Wharton Phil Foden Jarrod Bowen Cole Palmer For me only Kyle Walker is a big miss and should have been in the squad. Possibly Luke Shaw as the 2026 defence is very short on experience other than John Stones. The others on the list haven't done enough to warrant a place in the squad in my opinion. The only players I can currently think of who I would like to be going to the World Cup are Harvey Barnes, who would have brought something different and positive from the bench and possibly Harry Maguire. Perhaps Maguire misses out with Tuchel's ''It's about the best team, who will get the best out of each other, be unselfish and support each other in what will hopefully be a long camp'' way of thinking. | | | |

Three times in three different posts aren’t typos. I pointed it out as I found the fact that you don’t even know the name of one of the players that you’re criticising long before a ball has been kicked to be quite relevant. [Post edited 22 May 22:12]

Not saying I would have picked anyone else merely pointing out that they are not very good. Tuchel can only pick what is available. Not a single player who can play under pressure when in possession or control the pace of the game. Same old problem with the inevitable same old result. What we would do for a Pirlo or Modric.

Respectfully, I'm not sure that foolishly adding an 's' to Dan Burn's name three times is really "quite relevant" as to whether I can offer the opinion that I don't think he's a World Cup level player on a football messageboard which generally and rightfully has a pretty relaxed attitude to spelling and punctuation, but OK.Clearly got on your goat. Thanks for letting me know. I used to work for a horrible Mr Burns in (redacted) in Fulham. Maybe that's why I have added that 's', three times Dr Freud... Perhaps explains my prejudice too. I still hope he has a great WC, I hope England prosper and am glad I'm not the England manager. I'll tap out of this thread - and perhaps the board until after the WC - by saying that the justification for hiring another foreign national manger in Tuchel (subs: pls check) was that he could take England to the next level, the level Southgate couldn't. Specifically, to win the World Cup. But at the very least he must better a QF place in this WC and the runner-up spot in the Euros. So I'm sure he knows what he's doing. Let's see.

I might be wrong, but every player has won either the Premiership, Bundesliga, La Liga, Champions League, one of the smaller European Cups, or a youth Euros or youth World Cup. Not sure we've ever had a better pedigree.
