I don't think i've ever hated an England manager more. Bloke is a Chelsea shagging fraud and the FA are negligent for suddenly extending his contract beyond this world cup, having originally given him the contract for... er, the world cup

Djed Spence for fooks sake

It's the oddest squad. Stones play in midfield. If that happens we've truly lost the plot as a nation.

I’m pleased we actually picked some fit fullbacks. 2 options on both sides. How refreshing.

Well as long as the qpr fitness team aren’t involved with England, I very much doubt we’ll see Stones play in midfield. We’ve got 5-6 players to play in the “2” in the middle.

It’s an interesting squad, but not necessarily a bad one.

Personally, I’d have taken Maguire over Burn, Palmer or MGW over Madueke, probably, and Wharton over Henderson. Completely agree with Foden not going, and I can see why he made the call on Palmer.

Left back looks a bit weak. Spence and Livramento are more naturally right backs and both right footed. One of those should have been a left footed left back, the other as a utility cover for both flanks.

Glad Eze made it. Glad he’s taken 3 number ‘9’s. Glad Rashford is in given his form for Barca.

Midfield and Forwards looks very capable of competing. Slightly worried about the defence. But England should compete.

I might be wrong, but every player has won either the Premiership, Bundesliga, La Liga, Champions League, one of the smaller European Cups, or a youth Euros or youth World Cup.

Not sure we've ever had a better pedigree.

Good point Baz. TT in his presser, when questioned on selections, mentioned the individuals having their medals on a number of occasions.

I didn’t realize Livramento was right footed? Doesn’t he normally play left back for Newcastle though? O’reilly is a quality left back though. We didn’t have a fit left back in the last major tournament squad, so I guess it’s an improvement!

Three times in three different posts aren’t typos.

I pointed it out as I found the fact that you don’t even know the name of one of the players that you’re criticising long before a ball has been kicked to be quite relevant.
[Post edited 22 May 22:12]

Woke up thinking about this - not that you struck a nerve or anything - remembering that while England manager, Bobby Robson called Wayne Rooney "Mark", Gary Lineker "Garth", Bryan Robson "Bobby", Trevor Steven "Gary"...and those were players he picked. Imagine what he called those he didn't think quite good enough for England. Kieron Dyer told a story of him being referred to as "Kevin" throughout a team talk too.

I reckon it's ok and not "quite relevant" therefore for a wally on a messageboard to misremember a name and still have an opinion about their footballing quality if an England manager can also do so so often.

Bobby Robson managed Rooney? Can’t remember that but agree with all your points, not sure why a typo needs to be called out and no relevance to view of player.

In terms of squad largely agree with Hunter and the players he’d taken over some that made the plane. The only one I’m slightly more concerned about is left back - an injury to O’Reilly and we’re in serious trouble and back to a right back playing left side which as Trippier showed last tournament, it seriously weakens your ability to progress/attack down that side. I don’t count Burn as a realistic replacement.

Thanks for saying. Have worked for many years alongside pedants - am probably one myself. But yeah, not sure about spelling police on football messageboards. You're right, he didn't play for Robson of course. I just remember the story Rooney told about Robson calling him "Mark": it was when he tried to sign him for Newcastle, says Google.

Having digested all the Tuchel quotes and theory, the squad makes decent sense - especially after Maguire's reaction. But Henderson and Mainoo were both stand-out poor performances in the final friendlies so I worry about them being the primary cover for CM. Bellingham a good option there too, I guess.

Tuchel a serial winner and appointed as such by FA. Again, this is all about winning a trophy and getting further than Southgate. I don't think he has much leeway nor need to make friends.

Doesn't that just mean he's picked the players that play for the biggest clubs who always win stuff? Not always a sign of quality.

Apart from Kane and arguably Bellingham and Rice I won't think we've got anyone particularly great. Most of the 1998 world cup team would walk into this team, Gazza, Fowler and Ian Wright would be starters now and didn't even make that squad!

Stone’s won’t be playing midfield
Both Skelly & O’reilly are natural midfielders who both can also play left back

And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles Brian Moore

You don’t need and it’s unlikely to have 11 great players. But we have Bellingham, Kane, Saka, Rice who are genuine top world class players. But you’ve also got a whole load that aren’t that far behind. Way I look at it, we’ve got Bellingham and Kane to start and if that doesn’t work out…bring on the Villa pair who are pretty good too!

Late to this thread, mainly because the whole thing all seems a bit meh.
The World Cup used to be my Christmas and birthday all rolled into one.
Unfortunately a number of things about the last World Cup and this one leave a bit of a sour taste , not to mention modern football in general being pretty bland and dull.

So I’m not totally engaged with Infantino’s money printing circus this time round .
But for what it’s worth , which is zero, I wouldn’t be going anywhere without taking a footballer as talented at Trent with me . Even if he doesn’t start the tournament, he is the type of player who can change the tournament for us. I’m not sure about Maguire , but I do feel he is a bit of a Jimmy Dunne for Rangers…important in both boxes .
Feel for Palmer and Gibbs White . Palmer because we know he has the talent and MGW because he form deserves reward .

Anyway, I see a decent squad . But not anything that will start dumping out the best teams at the business end. Might be wrong .
Who knows .
Anyway set those alarm clocks for the pinnacle of the game when Iran play New Zealand.
I love that those countries get to play in a World Cup by the way. But not when they make up the majority . It’s supposed to be the best teams in the world .

He’s amazing, he was breaking up attacks on the edge of his own area in the first half, best English player I’ve ever seen.

It was about Ten years ago whilst sat In the loft we were playing Leicester City, their bloke got the ball and kept It as he advanced towards the loft with our defenders trailing in his wake, he briefly looked up just Inside our penalty box and coolly scored.
That bloke was Harry Kane.
Every now and again you'll see a player for the first time and think effing hell who Is that bloke?
We are so lucky to have him In the England squad.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

i actually thought that Ted when we had this right back first playing for us on loan from Tottenham.

ie Mr Kyle Walker and like Mr Harry Kane, he certainly lived up to his early hype.

It wasn’t a typo or a spelling error. You clearly thought his name were Dan Burns as that’s how you referred to him three different times whilst giving him stick each time.

I couldn’t care less about spelling or grammatical errors.

The reason I called it out as I’m just absolutely sick and tired of hearing and reading English football fans slagging off England players and Managers. It’s completely incessant and cyclical. It doesn’t matter who we appoint as manager or who that manager picks, there’s just a steady stream of negativity all the time. We had years of people whinging about Southgate picking Maguire, now people are whinging Tuchel hasn’t. People hate Jordan Henderson because he’s getting on a bit. And apparently Dan Burn is next on the conveyor belt to be slagged off for how he couldn’t possibly help England win a World Cup a month before he’s ever even played in a World Cup.

I think it’s utterly ludicrous. In the vast majority of major tournaments the star players are rarely the ones you expected them to be pre-tournament. And the players that shine for England often tend to be some of the ones you didn’t expect. Kane and Bellingham were slagged off pretty relentlessly for the entirety of the last Euros. They’ve slid back into favour of the English psyche but how long will that last? One 0-0 draw with Ghana I’m sure will be enough to ostracise them as overrated overpaid wastes of space.

Is there at least a chance that Tuchel has a bloody good idea of how to win football tournaments? Given that he has, ya know, won a few football tournaments. Is there a chance that he picked players he’s knows he can trust to execute a plan? A chance he knows he’ll have to be tactically superior as we’ll never be able to compete technically with the top teams and he’s picked a squad to suit that tactical plan?

Tuchel has a literally unblemished qualifying record and someone on here has listed him as his all time least favourite England manager. It’s absolute madness. Steve McLaren couldn’t get out of Euros qualifying by getting a result against Croatia at Wembley ffs. But this guy is the worst?

As a county we have to understand this isn’t normal. The pressure these blokes work under every other summer is completely abnormal. Ireland, Italy and Wales aren’t even there. Italy won’t have been to a WC for at least 16 years at their next opportunity. And here are the English slagging off their manager and players before a ball’s been kicked after a literally perfect qualifying campaign. I bet they’d take Tuchel AND this squad off of our hands in an instant.

It’s just all finger pointing and bitchiness and it always has been. It’s the one constant since I’ve been alive. Is it any wonder we don’t thrive in these tournaments?

Your contribution to that negativity by criticising a man so readily despite not actually knowing his surname waved a red rag straight at me and there’s your context.

I will apologise for singling you out. You don’t deserve that in any way, it was just what lit my touch paper.

Think I’ll give this thread and any other England football content a swerve for the next month now. I’m just going to support these men - whoever they are - resolutely and without waver as they have a chance to make my lifelong hopes and dreams come true. Maybe if more people took that attitude we’d already have another couple of stars on our shirt by now.

Couldn't remember that at all, not that I go to every game. But no, I'm right.

I reckon that was v Spurs, 2015. Kane got two, Sandro and his exploding knee got one.
