But, why is it that the victims of social media abuse are effectively penalised while those who enable it, namely Meta, X, Snapchat, TikTok etc, are allowed to continue their nefarious work?

I think most of us were lucky to grow up in a world without social media,and we were allowed the freedom to enjoy other things instead of being glued to a little screen for hours on end.

As someone with 2 young daughters I am delighted with this news. Kids should not be on social media. I was worried my girls would get to the age where they want social media because all their friends have it and I would eventually cave and let them have it. Now I just need to be worried about their friends having smart phones and them also wanting one. |  | | |

Totally agree and actually many of the young ones will work out ways around this, before the supposed adults in the room can understand how they have done this.
In a similar way, I wonder how effective the ban on porn for under 18s has been. Simple use of a VPN negates this and am sure that must be easily known for most. I mean its not as if football clubs have gone after, fans that use VPN's to watch live games - likewise social media companies arent likely to do this either....
Its a good sound byte for Starmer - on the week of the "Andy Burnham" by election (co-incidence!!), but extremely unlikely i feel to be achievable in anyways.... [Post edited 15 Jun 9:37]

It's not for this generation, but the generation after. A bit like the attempt to increase the age that cigarettes can be bought, it is to try to reduce the supply at an earlier age.
As Clive says, it's incredibly difficult to police and will bite back; with the increasing use of SoMe by political parties, how will 16 year olds learn about politics if they can't access these tools until they're 16, the proposed age to vote?
It's an interesting example of trying to govern 21st C. technologies with pre-21stC. systems. We exist in a digital world now - a school leaver is younger than the iPhone - and we need to find a better way to govern it than with analogue systems. |  |

I've just watched a Woman walking her dog, She stops and gets her phone out of her pocket and her thumb Is whizzing up and down the screen whilst her dog just stares up at her. They move on and after about Ten feet the same thing happens again.
It's insanity, what or why on earth are people doing texting each other In the morning?
There should be a social media ban on people under the age of 98 Years old.
Groups of People standing outside bloody shop doorways blocking the entrance talking or texting shyte to each other.
Phones should have a device built into them whereby If the user Is texting or talking crap about nail bloody varnish or table cloths then the phone explodes killing them. |  |

Agree. Most teenagers, and younger, are far more IT savvy than their parents and will find ways around it. I'm not sure how enforceable it can be. Could UKG cut off access to TikTok, etc from 21:00 - 07:00? |  |

I'm not really sure that I understand the argument that it is unworkable and that kids will find a way around it. Families should not be allowing their children under the age of 16 to have unfiltered access to a smart phone, services like Google Family Link and Kids Place by Kiddoware allow the parents to easily restrict what apps can be used and any app requested to be downloaded needs parental approval. So if a child requests a VPN app it would get denied. I am not saying messages should be read etc but they shouldn't have free reign to do whatever they want online.
As for the social networks themselves, the government will most likely have the power to give unlimited fines. That should be enough to make most social networks tighten the restrictions. The more countries that agree to ban social media, the tighter those restrictions will be. | | | |
