First reaction for Millwall defeat 16:14 - Aug 8 with 21042 views

Obviously the big negative is that we are out which ultimately is all that matters, and we gited them their goal in normal time.

Penalties were a mixture of not great pens from us but in fairness some great saves also from their keeper.

All that said we drew 1-1 with one of the best teams from last year, both playing pretty much full strength sides. We deserved a draw at least, created the most chances, pretty solid defensively and potentially moving the ball forwards quickly much faster.

Performance wise I think it was decent - plenty of moments of frustration, but I feel if we play like that and improve on the errors for last third we will be ok this season.

Hard to be positive after a loss, but I'm not all doom and gloom after that, frustrating as the result is.

Why on earth should Burrell be on the bench? His record is 1 goal in 2, and he led the line with Kone mostly playing in a withdrawn position last season. Kone is 1 in 4+. It’s no comparison. I know who id be selecting up top as my main striker.

100% but this season we have to manage Burrell's game time much better to avoid injury.

I have no doubt that if Burrell had played at West Ham that is a cup tie we would have won.

Kone is a great finisher, play them as we did last season.

Kone is a good finisher, but really needs to start progressing the rest of his game. That performance yesterday - slow, sluggish and a poor touch, is all too often as far as I’m concerned.

We still don’t have a hold up striker capable of playing back to goal, with a quality hold and lay game. Kone is meant to be that man, but he is too erratic at it. This season is a big one, to see if he can develop that part of his game.

But right now, he doesn’t make the first 11 for me in this new formation.

I thought there was a lot of good yesterday. The distribution from Charles, Kemper, the defence as a whole. A lot of the build up play.

My gripe is the same as I've had all through the pre-season. We play well until we get to the oppos penalty box and then things often grind to a halt.

We can't always pass the ball into the back of the net. The midfielders need to start taking shots when they get to the eighteen yard line if nothing else is on. If they don't go in they create ricochets, rebounds, goalies parry the ball back into play. All chances that strikers should thrive on.

Not many teams are going to score goals against Millwall by crossing the ball into the box. They're very well drilled defensively and are bloody big. Don't forget they had one of the best defensive records in the league last year.

We were clearly trying to pull them around the pitch, and create gaps. As I said on another thread, we were half a second to slow moving the ball, but that will come as the players get used to the new formation and patterns of play.

Still think we need another CM though.

There was definitely contact but the Millwall player planted his foot and Saito caught him. Not a pen and neither he nor his teammates around him really appealed.

I mean it’s a bit pointless as we were never scoring a penalty yesterday, but I thought was a penalty live and have rewatched a few times now. 100% a penalty. Saito doesn’t run into the defender, the defender moves into Saito’s space and then catches his back leg. Saito is closer to the goal, running towards goal and the defender was behind moving into this space.

I didn't even realise we played yesterday just seen the result on here. No idea we played this early in the summer. I should pay more attention.

I'm used to failure and defeat as A QPR fan since '77 and even given our castratus results in both cup competitions over the years, i'm fuc ked seven ways from sunday to think we are out of one comp already even before i've packed me bucket and spade for my annual 10 days in Nerja .

It was Chairs worst game as throughout pre season he was linking very well with Vale and Madsen and not holding onto the ball too long like he did against Millwall.

Kone and Burrell had off days but I would not overly worry.

Smyth i thought was half decent and likewise Poku has played much better in the pre season.

Its going to be interesting with Charles - he has supreme long passing skills, way better than most of our outfield players - almost Wilkins-Esque !!

Kemper was extremely solid. Ronnie and Jimmy is a double.act supreme and Mbengue is well Mbengue.

Thought Varane, Saito and Lloyd all did well, when they came on.

Shame about the pens - did we ever think we would progress.
